There are 3 kinds of Mentors: 30% are people who only want the crown for beeing extra (this is the bad kind that you will remember) 65% genuinly want to help (this is the good kind) and 5% are people who have finished the game and are bored but will outperform you any day of the week and just do the mentor-roulette so they have a reason to log into the game

@@neptunenko9557 unless you are a completionist or a very dedicated achievment-hunter you will reach that point eventually. Which is why it`s important to take breaks from the game from time to time.

Gotta love being this high up as a free trialer for a year and a half now. Sadly this is mainly due to financial situation, had it been different I'd probably buy a sub. So far the free trial is enough and it paid off to wait since now Stormblood is being added and as Blue Mage enjoyer I can finally get all the important spells I need.

17:00 I feel called out. I tried googling the optimal lvl60 rotations for NIN and WAR but only got lvl90 results, so I just had to do the math myself. Spent hours whacking that training dummy in Whitebrim.

Wesk Alber gives rotations for every 10 levels in his guides. Couldn’t tell if he’s one of the people the video makes fun of but I’ve always done well DPS wise using his rotations to level up and his vids have been highly recommended by the community if you’re not familiar already.

Love your reaction. As someone who still considers himself a newbie (although I "already" have my 2 years closing in) I always enjoy when new players getting lost into the rabbit hole of FFXIV. Dont know if you have watched them but JoCats "crap" guides are also very well made and not that crappy at all ^^

The thing about mentors is that there are unique rewards locked behind it, particularly a mount, so a lot of, shall we say, undesireables, tend to become "mentors". That said, there are some good ones out there that genuinly want to help.

Being a mentor used to be fun. Then some redditors and streamers memed we were all awful. Started getting a ton of shit and harassment due to the crown, took it off and just said "fuck it" to helping people. Fun times.

My favorite days in the novice network. Happens when mentors start kicking each other from the novice network. It's only temporary. Lasts just a day. But the initial drama is good and the returning mentor, expresses their disdain. So the drama escales pretty good.

I like to think I'm one of the good ones. I'm nowhere near the mount; I haven't even got mentor roulette unlocked since my FC has gone pretty inactive of late. I'm not the "best player", I don't know every stat amd mech. But I'll answer newbie questions,. jump into a dungeon you need cleared if I can, and try to make folks feel welcome.

Just gonna mention something about Limsa. That's were you can change to the Rogue class. Now I don't mean to tell you start leveling Rogue/Ninja. It's a really fun class to play, but that's not what I wanted to point out. The Rogue's class questline is the earliest you can get your hands on a story line written by Natsuko Ishikawa, the talented writer directly responsible for Shadowbringers and Endwalker. She is also responsible for quite a few quest lines and additional written earlier in the game. And Rogue is where you can get a taste for what's to come. You can passively level Rogue by abusing the ridiculously high main quest xp rewards. No need to rush to do it, but it's on the table. She also wrote the Alchemist story line and that is really strong too. And if you think that you will only lvl only one class...yeah that is possible , if you're are boring and is the kinda person that leaves money on the table. The main quest and regular dungeons give enough XP to completely lvl atleast 3 jobs to high level.

I feel like this use to be true but after the arr reworks, the exp dries out around 42. I recently had to make a new character, and if you only play the msq and nothing else, you need an additional 2 leveling roulettes to take you to level 50. It still might be true that you can take 2 jobs through each expansion after arr. But the exp is not as lucrative as before.

17:14 Hey Russ, We have on Ragnarok-Chaos at least one eternal FTP player, he is free to play as long as there is freetoplay in the game. He is already well known on ragnarok, and as eternal sprout (we call him honorable Mentor), he has everything maxed, every quest done, is always on novice network and sometimes he spawns S ranks and conducts S ranks with the help of other hunters in "business".

Leaving is far more common than kicking, since no one usually agrees to a vote, but no one can force you to stay. More a late game party finder problem, which isn't too bad. Usually the rule is "three pulls messed up before prog point" before it is considered "polite" to excuse yourself. After all mistakes happen but you don't have to trap yourself.

My thoughts on streamers and new players in general doing main story is pretty strait forward. Focus on, but don't rush the main story thru ARR. It's ok to explore a few other things along the way. A lot of content isn't available until you finish that initial story, as is the way with all MMOs.

FFXIV story is like a fine wine, it gets better with age. If you’re able to watch the cutscenes and enjoy them from ARR to Endwalker you’ll see what I mean. It’s a rather absurd amount of story but it’s so good. Also, if you use a fantasia on your character to change your appearance, don’t feel bad if you spend more than an hour in that screen, I guarantee others have spent more lol. Last thing, for the more seasoned players of FFXIV, it’s always fun seeing someone else trying it out and hopefully enjoying it. Definitely fun to hear first impressions and being reminded ya know?

"you pull you tank" is the worst mentality in this game. As a tank you just run in circles and AOE. It's not hard. You have to actively try to not get aggro if you want to keep adds on someone else

“You pull you tank” mostly comes from when Tanks don’t feel like their gear is strong enough to double pull and yet the healer or one of the DPS runs ahead to grab the next wave of enemies anyways. As someone who has experienced this, it’s kinda bullshit-

Yeah I don't know what mentor pee'd in his cheerio's but most are just fine, they get shit because the mentor roulette can pop you into anything and there are a lot of fights to have to remember and possibly deal with crap in because they can't abandon that roulette as easily if its bad.

Yeah, mentors don’t really have much of a purpose anyway with how easy normal content is, and most people will already help you out if you ask. Novice network is horribly designed (why does a mentor have to actively invite new players?) so, I don’t fault anybody for becoming mentor for the rewards. The main thing mentor does is lets everyone else know you did 3000+ guildheists for the comms. The mentor hat is basically a glorified relic weapon.

HUGE shout out to folks in the helper category. Certain old content is almost impossible to get a group of randoms to queue up for, and as a free trial player I can't make a party finder group to get help either. Which is rough when you want to do old optional content that has story plot beats associated with it, or if you want a specific set of gear that only comes from an old fight no one runs anymore. But every time I've asked for assistance with stuff like that in the world chat, I always get some kind souls that are willing to run it unsynced with their level 90 character to help me get what I need. Whenever I get to the point where I've cleared all the free trial content and upgrade to the full game, I want to pass that generosity down

The only time I've had to kick people is whenever they're afk/offline. Most of the time in dungeons the rest of the group just brute forces and covers/carries the person who's struggling. Not ideal, I would prefer they learned, but I'll always take the "Fine I'll carry you..." over the toxic rage that I always see in WoW haha.

@@JustRuss It IS a pro gamer title. It's a solo trek through a 200 floor dungeon. It takes around 12-16 hours per attempt and if you die at any time you have to start again. You can do it in 10 floor increments so at least you can attempt it in many sittings.

I'm a Mentor in FF14, along with most of my FC and our sister FC, and we actually try to be good mentors: jumping into roulette when people are struggling, trying to give good advice to sprouts who ask for it, and generally trying to be a positive influence in the community. But MAN are a lot of mentors just garbage, and just in it for the mount. The number of times I've seen Mentors giving intentionally bad advice to new players "for the memes" is just astounding.

The general rule as a tank in ff14 is “if someone can pull ahead of you, you aren’t moving fast enough” mobs are gated so you can’t pull more than 2 at a time and single packs are weak enough that a dps and a healer can tank them, so there is no reason not to pull everything as a tank, if you do your roll, nobody should be able to pull ahead of you, so if you are in a scenario where you can ypyt you have probably done something wrong.

@@JustRuss Yea it's mostly just an understanding of collaboration but "you pull you tank" is just bad mentality. Iv'e been in 1 (thankfully just one FF14 community is really good) where the tank missed 3 enemies and didn't hit them with agro so i was kinda lagging behind (as BLM) and He wouldn't re-aggro what i brought to him so i had to finish them off luckily the healer noticed and diverted some heals. I asked if he saw that i brought him enemies and he gave me the line "You pull it you tank it." Definitely not good vibes.

yeah anyone actually stubborn enough to say that line without it being a meme is not someone im going to be playing with again. accidents happen lmao. but sometimes if you are just pulling for the tank to improve efficient dps, that's part of the tank's job description to pick them up off you, as you just made the run smoother and it's a team effort. well within their job description for sure. @@DragoonZell

I'm a F2P player, not because I don't want to sub but rather because I don't want it to end. Like free version lasts forever, but after you sub for the game and that sub runs out then you can never go back to the free version ever again. Meaning, even if you want to play the game, if you don't have money anymore then you still can't play, not even the free version, all because you subbed only once. That's what holding me back right now cause when I sub, I want to keep playing the game, I don't want to sub then not be able to play the game anymore. And I'm not confident that my life are stable enough for me to keep paying, so I started playing the free version years ago and I'm still on the free version. Hopefully either they make it easier to start paying, or I get a more stable life someday, but for now I just can't. Lol XD

In relation to the permeant free trial players, I have a real life friend who has thousands of hours in Minecraft, owns hosted server and loads of mods, straight up refuses to buy the game. Has to download updates through dodgy websites risking viruses. Insults me for buying and subscribing to games I enjoy even though I tell him by not supporting games he enjoys, they might just stop making them. There is no telling these people how the world works though, if they can get something for free, they will do it no matter what. He's not poor either and wastes plenty of money elsewhere too.

Mentor in this game is basically just a shiny hat you get for spamming guildheists until you get 1500 comms, to be far the only reasonable way to get that many comms if you have a life is guildheists, but it’s kind of lame. The purpose of being a mentor is supposedly to teach people casual content, but casual content in this game is all easy enough that there is nothing really to teach. There are no “raid mentors” even though that would probably be useful. mentors being awful is mostly a Reddit and KZbin meme, the vast majority of mentors are just regular players who want to help others, get the free rewards that come with it or have a shiny next to their name, usually a combination of all three. Generally when you queue into a duty around 10-20% of the players will be a mentor so that is way too large for them all to be toxic.

i know ur obviously joking about stalling. But just like how it is ok for you to advertise that you are going to play the game, it is ok for ppl to leave when the stream has too much reacts and no gameplay. Everyone's time is limited and personally I simply cannot afford the time to watch someone sit around and not playing the game. I survived the 4hour char creation stream. But I just couldnt after. KZbin has the perk of allowing me to watch vids whenever I can. But of course, you do you dont listen to what others say. Just be careful of too much circlejerking about msq andies or ur stream will just be a okmage 2.0 where any criticism is met with her classic "mimimimimi".

May (originally known as Hen Tie for year's until someone reported name) has been raiding with us for a few year's now. Great person, skilled player and does do all content in the game and collects rare mount's. They've always been known for their sexy glams. Is a legit Penta legend and has solo'd all 3 Deep Dungeons. Certainly doesn't do nothing all the time :)

If all I did was AOE as a SAM. Then what about my Combos and Rotations? (MAH ROTATIONS!) If I am not using my Midare Setsugekka everytime how do you expect me to deal damage? AOE is good and all but I rather finish my targets as quickly as possible. I prefer dealing a huge number rather than smaller amounts of damage they cannot kill us if there already dead right? Sure the name DPS is Damage over time but there is never a Job that is a Pure Glass Cannon and the closest I know is a SAM. Dancers for one well you cannot avoid AOEs because you be doing it anyways because of the rotation it's unavoidable and plus the quest that gives you the dancer job FORCES you to learn and use your abilities. Anyone who don't enjoy the games story... Why even do them? Just MSQ Skip instead. I did not come to FFXIV just for the endless Dungeons only. And for the record this is not FF7 where we are just following Cloud Strife through his adventures OUR Characters are part of the story. Right now I put my MSQ on hold until my Boyfriend (Married in Game platinum plan) can catch up to me. We are both Sprouts. I came to learn about LORE. Does it make me a MSQ "andy" If I must learn about the Calamity? Because for the record I was NOT around when FFXIV 1.0 was around. So I apologize if I missed the 1.0 boat. As for Mentors? Don't care. I see no need to say a word to them. I am a very fast learner I don't need to rely on Mentors, If I ever become a Mentor does not mean I am gonna lower my skills and be bad at the game being a mentor does not mean oh I am gonna deflate into a pile of shit because the mentor icon is a curse. Nothing but superstitions and folk lore. I will play as how I always played the game at my best. Being a mentor does not change everyone to an alter ego of themselves. I will be the same person mentor or not it's just a freaken status it has no special brain washing powers anyone who believes that crap are just paranoid that someone may not be who they are anymore once they don the crown We are NOT all the same person ya know. Joke or no joke about mentors in the community THERE. IS. NO. CURSE. NO. BRAIN. WASHING. It's all fake smoke and mirrors. I don't believe in the superstitions and fantasies that some dumb line of code 0s and 1s have a impact on someone. Everyone is different. I am a casual player But I am not a raid person either, It's really not my thing. Story, Normal Dungeons (Not unless said dungeon has to be cleared, aka Forced Raids/Hard), Gold Saucer and just leveling up is good enough for me, I also don't interact with players unless they directly interact with me. I won't touch raids with a ten foot pole, I don't care how "easy" it is, It's not my cup of tea. My all time favorite Dungeon is hands down The Praetorium, But I have others like Sastasha, Castrum, Copperbell mines, Brayflox's longstop, The Stone Vigil, The anti-tower, The Vault. But the ones I hate most are, The Labyrinth ofthe ancients, Sohr Khai (Duty Support worst experience), Saint Mocianne's Arboretum, Aetherochemical Research Facility, The Great Gubal Library.

I thought the mentor memes were just memes when I started playing a few months ago. They are not. Literally every garbage player I've encountered so far has been a mentor. Every tank that doesn't use mitigation. Every healer that doesn't DPS or can't handle even the smallest pulls. Every DPS that runs ahead, pulls everything, dies, and then leaves. Every one of them a mentor. It's actually mind boggling. How is that damn crown icon such a reliable indicator of incompetence?

what if they are just trying to help tho? if you die because of it then sure - assholes. but if they are just increasing efficiency, i think it's within your job description to tank the mobs they pull to you

@@JustRuss which is why i ask them to stop doing it if im not comfortable with it. i am a sprout and know i have limits. most people just dont do it again if i ask them (half the time its accidental anyway). i cant even do high-end content yet, so its always roulettes, where half the time someone is completely new to the duty. dont do roulettes if you have a problem with that imo (figure of speech, didnt mean you obviously :)
