oh nono, not automatically :) you absolutely have to keep them spotted for your teammates; that makes them a lot less dangerous. But then it's looking at the map that determines what you attack - the closest, dangerous, isolated target. I spot DD1 on the right and attack it because it's close, but then I leave him alone because he's spotted right in front of a cruiser (guess who takes him down). Then I go after the one on the left because he's charging our battleships - and very dangerous. Reading the map will allow you to determine where you should focus. When using IJN CV, its planes are fragile so make sure that dont get too close to enemy aa ships especially US. If you want to attack DD, try to observe its movements,if you notice that DD dont know how to properly evade TB you can focus your squadrons on her. DONT force yourself on DD if you cant sink because you are just wasting your time. Just make sure that DD always spotted as possible so cruisers on your team will do their job. Secondly, its a bad decision if you want to attack enemy CV immediately especially if the match is center control because you literally sending your planes to death. Try to attack the most nearest enemy ships. If you are under attack by enemy DD dont panic. Observe its movements,if that DD suddenly show its broadside from far away means that torpedoes are now deployed so do some evasive maneuvers by making your ship to full reverse and turning on side which the torpedoes are gonna hit. It always works on me. If you survive the attack and the DD suddenly stick so close to you, stick to her too. Dont make a distance between the DD as possible because topedoes doesnt armed at point blank range and sail towards near your allies and ask for help. Use your TB squadrons wisely on that scenario. I survive many times survive many times on that tactics
