The WRC is the FIA World Rally Championship, a tough motorsport using rally cars on real roads around the world. Watch the best rally drivers battle on gravel and asphalt roads with mud, rain, dust, ice and heat! Watch high speed action as the rally drivers power slide and drift round narrow corners, go flat out over a big jump or through a watersplash, handbrake turn round a hairpin, survive a big moment, or have a massive crash! Rally requires maximum attack and careful tactics to become world rally champion.
Each rally has timed sections called special stages, on closed roads. Drivers complete these stages as quickly as possible. A co-driver reads pace notes that explain the hazards ahead. Rally drivers use the same rally car to travel to each stage on public roads, following normal traffic regulations. The crew which completes all the stages in the shortest time is the rally winner. Championship points are won using the same scoring system as Formula 1. The championship is administered by Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), motorsport's world governing body.
Over 30 countries have hosted WRC rallies. Rally Monte Carlo, Rally Argentina, Rally Finland, Rally Portugal, Tour de Corse on Corsica, France, Rally Sardegna on Sardinia, Italy, Safari Rally in Kenya, Acropolis Rally in Greece, Rally New Zealand, Rally Australia, Rally Japan, Rally GB, Rally Catalunya, Rallye Deutschland, Rally Mexico and many more.
Some of the world's greatest drivers have won the FIA World Rally Championship for Drivers, like Colin McRae, Carlos Sainz, Walter Röhrl, Stig Blomqvist, Petter Solberg, Ott Tänak. The list of world rally champions includes many Finnish rally drivers like Juha Kankkunen, Tommi Mäkinen, Ari Vatanen, Marcus Grönholm, Hannu Mikkola. French drivers have had success with Sébastien Ogier, and 9 times world champion Sébastien Loeb. Famous drivers from other motorsports have come to try rally driving like Ken Block from Rallycross, and Robert Kubica and Kimi Räikkönen from F1.
Car companies compete for the prestigious FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers awarded to the most successful WRC constructor. Winners include Citroen, Hyundai, Volkswagen and Peugeot. Ford have had success with the Ford Escort, Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta when the M-Sport team won in 2017.
The 1980's featured the iconic Group B rally cars like the Lancia 037 and Delta S4, Peugeot 205 T16, MG Metro 6R4, Ford RS200 and Audi Quattro.
Japan dominated the 1990s with the Mitsubishi Lancer, Subaru Impreza, and Toyota Celica and Toyota Corolla. Toyota returned to the WRC in 2017 with the Toyota Yaris WRC, winning in 2018. The 2019 championship was won by Hyundai with the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. Find out about the latest winners and champions at www.wrc.com

0:30 big rain puddles, 1:01 very fast flat out, 4:50 sequence of hairpins bends uphill, 7:12 becomes foggy with low cloud, 7:40 fast through the small village of Aiti, 11:10 big puddles and over a big bridge, 15:25 faster and smoother road now, 17:11 through the small village of Cambia, 18:19 through the larger village of Carticasi, 19:37 slippy mud on road, 19:48 slides on mud after this bridge, 23:20 sequence of downhill hairpin bends, 25:28 high open mountain road now, 27:10 end of stage "That wasn't very good" says Evans but he was 10 seconds faster than anyone else!

It took me a little bit to figure out why his pace notes were odd but these guys actually use the numbers system backwards than normal. Typically the lower number indicates a sharper turn and the higher the number indicates the more straight turns. But they use up to 8 to indicate their turns and 8 being extremely sharp with 1 being super straight.

difficult to find such a demanding stage without a moment's respite, truly an incredible pace and so many variables. Evans is occasionally heard to groan from the effort. It's a real shame that the TDC is no longer around the rallies that matter

You know I was never impressed with Evans throughout last year, rather I was convinced that Tänak was more talented(although a bit rough around the edges). Now I don't know who is better but Evans is clearly supremely talented, so is Paddon.

is he saying short or sharp? took me awhile to figure out his note system is reverse than normal 7 is tightest 1 is fastest.
@barsorrro
@barsorrro 8 жыл бұрын
+mattman696 To me, that sounds quite evidently to be "sharp". Trying to set the calls of this "sharp" to the corners they apply to, I conclude that he thus describes such corners which indeed require adjusting the speed to the grade of the corner, but where the appex is really close to the entry, so the rest of the corner is of a much lesser grade. Say, if it's "six right sharp", you basically have to slow down to the level of a regular sixth-grade corner (which is pretty slow or his scale), but if you manage to get a good line and clip the corner well, you may start accelerating almost right off the entry. I think that the name "sharp" seems really fitting there, because some of those corners are either of an average length or even quite long -- only that doesn't seem to make much difference, since they just keep opening. Also, by my reckoning, the the tightest corner seemed to be a "9". I always wondered what made people use the reverse scale, or the "verbal scale" (where you also have a consequent, precise system of difficulty gradation, only that you never ascribe numbers to those grades but rather put fixed names to them -- like: "absolute", "fast", "key", "medium", "slow", "hard"). It always occured to me as much less natural to using the 6-1 scale, with 6 standing for the fastest corner.

It sounds crazy but I feel he wasn't happy with the pacing of the co-driver at times (maybe at 10:19) and wasn't very confident on various entries. However I am not an expert and the conditions were really challenging. But I think that's why he wasn't pleased with the stage run.
