What's better than building a hot Mustang Muscle Car? Building TWO of them.
Barry White has his hands full. The Shop is transforming two Pony cars for two very different events; a new '05 car for the SEMA awards and a Super Muscle '69 Fastback for auction.
On double duty, everyone needs to pitch in. Barry's wife and daughter get down and dirty and even designer and parts guy, Chris Brown, unplugs the phone to roll in grease.
The first priority is to transform a brand-new '05 Mustang V8 into a Boss-inspired monster dreamed up by Barry and Chris.
They're going for 'Best in Show' at SEMA, the auto industry's biggest showcase in Las Vegas. One hundred thousand visitors from 100 countries will be there. Reputations will be made and lost.
Meantime, the old '69 resurrection risks taking a back seat, so Barry invites his friends at the Beverly Hills Fire Department to pitch in after hours. To lure these muscle car fans, Barry paints the car fire-engine red.
The stage is set for a Mustang duel, and double trouble for Barry White.

As of March 2023 this car is listed on Hemmings Motor News for $48,900. You couldn't buy all those parts for that price today. Then add all the skilled labor involved in the project. Somebody is getting a heck of a deal.

The show is interesting, but at the end of the day what do you have? You have a rebuilt car from the late 60's for example in 2020. It'll require upkeep and parts and servicing will be a pain. I don't think I'd want one.

He's claiming 280 hrs labor @ $100 an hour, which is what he'd bill a customer. His costs would be more like $20/hr. And a lot of his parts would also be marked up. So more like $6k in labor, $3-4k in parts and his rent and other costs. So, $20k tops.

Did they drive an unknown, untested car with drum brakes and no reg/insurance when they could have simply trailered it? Cleaning it after paint makes no sense, unless they slipped it into the paint booth only when they had a chance. Paint guy has an excuse for everything, not much of a self-starter. Great for a micro manager boss, but who else needs a hand-holder? Considering the car drove in, just cleaning the FE drivetrain and throwing on chrome dress up with an Edelbrock head/cam/intake setup would have done perfectly fine and saved time/money--and looked period-correct. You want to get a car flipped in 3 weeks? Always buy a Chevy and put in a 350 or an LS--everything you need, practically sits on an auto parts store shelf somewhere, ready to go. Paint it resale red and slap on chrome rims with a loud exhaust, you can practically toss it together with stuff cheap off eBay or FB marketplace and it still will sell any day of the week.

His cars always look nice, but you wonder how much of it is for show. They painted the car before they had cleaned it underneath, and he never does anything for the handling, especially since they have stuck in that big power engine, and they have kept the cart springs at the back. I guess no one is ever going to really drive it let alone race it, it's just for the odd burn out straight line blast and most of all for looking at.

Wheels look like crap. If you're going to build a tribute stock car, the wheels should be the first thing that looks right. And that 385 series engine (429-460) was a dumb move, found that out when nothing fit. You took out a FE, why not doll it up a little and put it back in? Car will never be raced anyway and if it was, not hard to make serious hp from a FE, just ask Parnelli.

A number of reasons. It makes good TV. (The proof? We're all here watching it and talking about it.) As cliff pointed out... It's the drama. Everyone loves a good 'will they, won't they' thing going on. That and it makes the team look better. Really, they're just a bunch of standard mechanics doing a job. Add a little suspense and drama though and boom, mechanic geniuses doing what no others can... Again, it makes 'feel good TV'. When you stop and think about it, of course it's stupid; every piece of TV programming apart from factual documentaries ARE stupid, but they pass the time which is all they're designed to do. That and to keep your eyes glued to the screen for long enough that the sneaky advertising companies might just be able to stuff an add or two down your throat while you're 'zoned out'. It works... And the industry generates billions...

If your such a great car maker & custom designer & build. Everyone knows you fucking do not paint a car before doing all the mechanical work done first. Not the other way around. I know this from taking paint & body work in high school for 3 years. Plus I've owned my own custome body & paint for car shows for over 20 years. I've done car shows. And that also tells me that Barry is not who he says he is. Its all bull shit and no one does a high dollar auctions without painting the frame first. But here it shows that's not done. Cause if it were then the front suspension would not be ripped apart after the fucming car has been painted.
