We had a young man come in to challenge me during the middle of class. He claimed he had a wrestling background (not much of one, apparently) and wanted to test himself. We had a grainy old security camera at that time, and we went back and pulled the footage and posted it.
Everyone is always asking me if this guy ever came back to sign up. He didn't. I saw him around the workout area in the gym a few times after that. But no sign up.
The submissions in order are:
Reverse Triangle
Rear Naked Choke
High Elbow Guillotine AKA Marcelotine
Darce
Gogoplata from the Rubber Guard
Wet Willy. Yes, Wet Willy.

Honestly, if they were half decent, that can be a solid background for getting into BJJ. I’m a really skinny, “dangerously” underweight guy (115 lbs at almost six feet), so it took me a long time to learn how to deal with the pressure from someone with a little wrestling knowledge. I’m confident against most wrestlers when I’m in bottom guard, but if they pass to side or full, I have a hell of a time escaping, especially depending on just how much bigger they are than I. Fortunately, everyone at my academy was/is cool and doesn’t try to hurt the “skinny, emo-haired, effeminate one.”

@@SuperGospelGangsta I mean, at my school, we generally start on the feet, be it a new student with a wrestling background or not. Drills are an exception, of course. Perhaps that’s because my school is much more traditional in the fighting/self-defense, sort of “Gracie” style, which has a lot in its curriculum for combating wrestlers. Perhaps I misunderstood your comment, though.

This is the kind of a thing they do at these schools. It has been going on as long as BJJ and JJ has been around. I mean it IS a fighting class right. What better way to advertise and to show students what's up and teach a little respect and humility without actually fighting in the street. There is a disrespectful way to do it though for sure but I believe this was done in line with respect. Just my opinion. Shit, take an hour and look up "Gym challenges" or "BJJ school challenges". Treat yourself! You will see both kinds of ways to handle the situation.

As someone who's wrestled for a while, and later gone into jui jitsu I can say that I definitely surprised and frustrated other people who were supposed to be at or above my level. At the same time, it's not like I could beat the very best in the gym starting out. It's a different sport, and even though wrestling gave me good fundamentals I still had to learn the sport. It's not a matter of which martial art beats which because the real answer is that the one who's more skilled is going to win. Wrestling doesn't teach how to submit or choke. Jui Jitsu doesn't teach explosive power and throws. Neither martial art is the perfect be all end all, but both are incredibly respectable and practical and should be treated as such. In this video we see a master of Jui Jitsu humbling a wrestler with far less experience. The lesson to learn is respect. It's not that Jui Jitsu beats wrestling, or that wrestling is useless. It's to learn that you can't underestimate your opponent like the young man did.

I guess there is the law suit/douche bag counter to being a nerd and invading someone's gym in the middle of class. I live in Brazil, things get handled differently out here. No law suits, to say the least. Most gyms have a liability waver you must sign before training. I don't think that was the case here. Sign the waver, can't sue. then it's just an inverted heel hook to surgery to learn some humility. Most Brazilians (and Americans actually) would at least choke you out. They would not care about being sued (I've seen it happen many times). The guy brought his cronies in to the gym to show off. I doubt he would later sue after being served up. Mute point, what I was saying was he DIDN'T but COULD have and most WOULD. Walk in to any Gracie Barra, ATT, BTT, Alliance, Chuteboxe, Macaco etc. gym and try that shit. 98% of the time you will be visiting a local hospital or at least a drug store. If you suffer from vaginitis of the soul, a lawyer as well...

Mick Michaelson I agree with you Mick, but telling someone they have vaginitis is not a valid legal defense. Meh, not really advanced. Notice how high his elbow got as reached for the ear plus his finger was bent. And there was ZERO rotation after insertion. Any experienced wrestler would have seen that coming a mile away and reversed him with a Stinky Stu.

@@ericcraig3875 nah he's just out classed. Wrestlers have little to no submission game. Their ONLY focus is getting your back to the ground. So even if they get to a dominate position. If they have no submission training, never trained with striking involved. There's not much they can do. Wrestling is great for learning how to get to a dominate position but that's about it. So it wouldn't have mattered if he had more experience or not.

Did he join the class after that? LOL. That would be a pretty good sell for most people. Also, I admire the sportsmanship between the two of you. When I saw the video title, I thought it was going to be some jerk that walked in like, "I'll take any of you on!", then somebody gets hurt. Glad to see that it was a civil challenge, in the spirit of sport. I'd love to join, but I can't relocate at the moment.

Damn that dude wasn't gonna tap for some reason. He was gonna let you break his arm and choke him out. Some people need to learn to humble themselves and understand they can't be a hot headed fool on the mat. Good thing you were nice to him getting choked out is much preferred to a broken arm.

Presumably, he didn’t walk in with the goal of learning about BJJ. Seems like he wanted to show how skilled he was, hence, going directly to a full-on challenge with his friends watching. I doubt he went in there hoping to show off how quickly he could be defeated. Must have taken him by surprise when his brain and body went into panic as he realized things weren’t going the way he planned. He chose to protect his pride over protecting his body parts.
