If you're going to do a penetration step then you need to actually step and not just fall on your lead knee. Step with lead foot and drive with back foot through opponent. You do this to penetrate through your opponent, otherwise you'll get snapped down by any decent wrestler. Try it and it will dramatically improve your takedown.. This is a typical beginner error especially with BJJ guys trying to learn traditional wrestling takedowns.

I really like this instructional and the detail you mentioned completes it. I have been watching tape on wrestling greats Like Bruce Baumgartner and Stephen Neal. They definetly do a subtle shift back then foreward as they step and launch into their shot. For a split second they even pick their lead foot up slightly as they recoil back to explode. It makes all the difference in the world and its also alot of timing as to not blatantly telegraph their shot.

VERY True! I'm a relatively new 1 year white belt and wanted to improve my standing/takedown game to compliment my BJJ, I struggled with pen-step for so long and as you said I event got snapped down several times by ex-wrestlers. Thanks a ton, I'll try that next time I drill!

What they don’t tell you is that your trail foot needs to be facing forward during that penetrating step not off to the side. Feels weird but it’s a must

This is something that I was really good at as a kid, wrestling around allot as a kid and also playing football. For whatever reason, this has been hard to implement in BJJ as an adult.

The BJJ stances and people you typically grapple there are different, which makes application of the penetration step and shot a little awkward. It's actually easier to do level changes and shots on folkstyle wrestlers because the reactions stances and grips are the same. Try using regular level change single legs, head inside singles, or a level change double instead of the regular wrestling shots. It might help.

I’m having the same problem incorporating it into bjj. I’ve been practicing on dropping my lead knee onto a couple of couch cushions lol. For real tho it seems to be helping
@ericcomstock2249

@@shad3128 im thinking its because in bjj most guys arnt trying to mount thier own offense. Thier hips are further back and they are rooted into the ground, plus the connection of the gi makes it easy to sort of stiff arm people. Ive found blast double and low singles work, but for everything else I just snatch up the legs with no knee pound.

Very interesting thread. I find the penetration step difficult and generally risky to go for takedowns - Just because I don't like getting kicked in the head and properly grabbing and controlling the legs is v difficult. And then for single legs I'm struggling with the takedown if the opponent is athletic and can keep the other (pick) leg out of reach or when running the pipe just keep bouncing. Counters tend to be simpler.

My lead knee always feels like it's going to explode trying to do this. Why would that be? I'm 6'4 with very long legs if that makes it more difficult.

It could be because of your leg not being strenched out enough. Most moves wont work if your not flexible. But i might be wrong so dont take my word for it.

What do you mean? You have to get low to take someone down
@fromthegamethrone
@fromthegamethrone Жыл бұрын
@@morenoh149 well that's not strictly true, but that's also not what I mean. I can get that low and move forward without putting my knee to the mat, so what is the knee for? I've asked several different practitioners and coaches in real life since asking here, and got the following answers: Several people said "I don't know" A few people said "it allows you to cover more distance whilst low, acting like one leg has two feet" And another said "it acts as a base, if you get sprawled at least one point of contact is on the floor and your foot/ankle is still free"

Just to cover distance really, its for if youre shooting from further out. dont need to fully touch the knee to mat if theyre close@@fromthegamethrone
