The crazy thing about Road Dogg & Billy Gunn suddenly swapping title hunts is that literally no one seems to legit remember why it happened, though unlike the Fingerpoke of Doom this legit seems like a "We honestly don't recall" situation instead of a "We don't want to admit fault" situation. I think the only person that's never been asked about it is Vince McMahon... and I bet he was the one who made that decision, due to his penchant for suddenly changing things on a whim, if he feels like it.
@anthonyturner639911 ай бұрын
I still hold my theory as to it being Road Dog who politicked his way into the IC belt. Since he had held the hardcore titles before I can see him using it as leverage. To this day the swap still grinds my gear. I hate it so much as a huge billy gun fan

@kardynalsyn950111 ай бұрын
IMO That initial last half of 96 and all of 97 was their height and the best time to tune in to see the nWo. Even while in that time-frame the member count definitely got bloated with too many useless performers and or wrestlers. Like you said though, Starcade 97 should have been the end of the group after Sting "won"
@Cableguy1511 ай бұрын
You hit the nail on the head with the "useless performers and wrestlers" bit. Even some of their bigger names were barely wrestling for a while, there. More power to them for making money without having to work, but the NWO could only cruise by on coolness and hype for so long. At some point, about 3/4ths of the group felt like they were just there to stand around or be stooges that Sting was meant to beat up.
@AGH6911 ай бұрын
I was hoping after Sting crushed Hogan at Starrcade, it wouldn't be long before the NWO ended. Apparently Bischoff had no plans to end it though, because of merch sales, Japanese deals and probably a lack of ideas. I was expecting Sting vs. Bret Hart to dominate the opening months of 1998, being sold as a world title unification, while Hogan would be occupied with cleaning house in the NWO and feuding with Savage. WCW had 3 PPVs in 1998 before Wrestlemania when Austin beat Shawn, so a best of 3 between Sting and Bret could've been huge.. Homeboy Stings emerges victorious and the Hogan rematch(es) can now take place once Savage is dealt with.. keeping in mind Hogan's creative control and needing to have him onboard with losing to Sting clean at Starrcade to set all this up.
@DBecks0911 ай бұрын

For anyone who was a WCW guy around this time, does WCW feel stale? @juststatedtheobvious963311 ай бұрын
WCW's most hardcore long term fans tended to be more interested in the workrate than the storyline. In a time before every match was a gymnastics demolition derby, and KZbin made everyone a supersmark, WCW could generally guarantee at least one match that showed off what genuine athletes could bring to a pre-predetermined contest.
