Batista made a WWE return in early 2014. "The Animal" had left WWE to pursue an acting career, and Batista decided to come back to WWE after he'd finished up playing the role of Drax in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Batista was immediately pushed to the very top of the cards, he announced that he entering the 2014 Royal Rumble in hopes of winning the WWE World Championship from Randy Orton, but things went rapidly downhill at during the Rumble match.
Fans wanted to see Daniel Bryan rise to the top in WWE and fans had hoped that Bryan would enter the 2014 Royal Rumble. When this didn't happen the crowd got very hostile, and Batista's Royal Rumble win was met with a lot of criticism. Batista would eventually turn heel, he would earn the names "Bootista" and "Bluetitsta" during this run, and when it all ended Dave talked about how much he disliked his time in WWE during this return.

If I remember correctly, Batista actually offered to have Disney work with WWE for some Guardians of the Galaxy promotion, which would have netted WWE some extra cash in return for promoting the film a ton. However, Triple H & Stephanie supposedly thought that it wasn't worth it, since the comic & characters were nowhere near mainstream back in 2014, so they turned down the offer, apparently even joking that Dave was just a part of some no name movie that no one was going to watch, similar to most of his other movies prior. At the very least, Batista got the last laugh in that situation, and WWE lost out on a ton of Disney money.

I stopped watching wrestling back in 2006, but I did tune in for Wrestlemania 30. I was completely blown away by the fan support for Daniel Bryan in the opening match. I vaguely remembered him as an Indy wrestler from the short-lived Wrestling Channel here in the U.K. but it was clear he was a megastar. Even without context Batista and Orton felt like bit-players in the main event. It’s interesting to see how Bryan’s rise was organic considering Batista’s rise to the top was fairly organic too. I felt at the time that Evolution was intended to elevate Orton first and foremost with Batista given the less glamorous enforcer / tag partner position within the group. After the botched Orton face turn Batista was given more screen time and his charisma really started to become apparent, and that led to his Wrestlemania 21 main event position as fans genuinely seemed to like him. I think it just proves that wrestling fans love a wrestler. As soon as they start showing ‘bigger’ aspirations like Hollywood or the NFL then that love just disappears.
@hitomisalazar4073
@hitomisalazar4073 Жыл бұрын
Heck I'd say that Daniel Bryan was even more than just Organic. It was something that clawed its way up. Like someone in booking/creative did everything they could to keep him down on the mid card/lower mid card and the fans really rallied behind him to ensure he moved up, while Booking/Creative tried to do everything they could to make it look like he wasn't ready/worthy of it with minimal fan appeasement. Until eventually they just couldn't deny it anymore. That's my memory of it at the time at least.

Ya I definitely agree, I don’t know what he means it wasn’t a success. It was very entertaining. We all cared, everyone was talking about it and the matches was a banger. I disagree the Evolution return wasbt great. It was. It was bringing them back for one big feud to put over a crop of new talent who had nobody left to fight as a faction, and considering all three Shield guys became world champions, I think it was a tremendous success, especially for a program that was in between WrestleMania and SummerSlam in those middle months

I felt like they missed an opportunity to do Batista vs Lesnar during that run. That's one of the few "dream matches" we never got and they were both in the company at the same time for the first time ever. They even had a segment on Raw together one week if I recall (yes I'm aware they wrestled in OVW but that doesn't count).

Batista unfortunately was the guy who the fans took out their frustration on. The WWE had his story all planned out but the fans wanted Bryan and they were going to hate anyone who the fans thought was getting the push over their boy D-Bry. It wasn't Dave's fault that the return didn't go as planned it was WWE shooting themselves in both feet and the knee by trying to force the fans to change the narrative.

Having Daniel Bryan eliminate Batista in the Royal Rumble match to win should have been the booked decision. McMahon always has a thing for trying to resurrect the past in some way, whether if it be Hogan, Michaels, Austin, Triple H, Cena, or Batista. Yet he refuses to acknowledge what the audience want.

Everyone loved the shield in 2014, it was only when they split up and Roman didn’t really acknowledge it or care when Ambrose & Rollins had an insanely passionate feud. Also the cancelwwenetwork thing was Rumble 2015 or at best it was nowhere near the level it hit when Roman won

What are you talking about? He was one of the best things about the ruthless aggression era. He helped define it. He main-evented wrestlemania 21. He had a great feud with the undertaker in 07. He put John cena over in 2010 and turned heel in the process, perfecting his mic and promo skills. His 2014 return was compromised by favouritism. The McMahons & triple H prioritised Dave because they knew he was an experienced main event player but more importantly Dave only signed to return because Vince promised him a world title run along with main-eventing wrestlemania 30. Thankfully the fans got what they wanted because Bryan won the big one and it was actually Dave who put him over. He may have won the royal rumble but Daniel won on the grandest stage of them all. When Batista left the night Seth Rollins betrayed the shield, his part-time contract officially expired. He fulfilled his obligations and went onto bigger and better things such as guardians of the galaxy. Not everyone’s career ends harmonically.

I personally loved his return in 2014. As usual, WWE and their lack of creative ruined his return. Batista whether or like him or not left a huge mark on WWE. Fans are so quick to turn on someone once they come back. Same thing recently happened to CM Punk. Which is why I enjoy the returns for what they are rather than basing it on popular opinion. The return of Evolution alone made it worth it. I loved the feud with The Shield.
