@hitomisalazar40739 ай бұрын
I remember going to that show as a kid. Tacoma Dome. I was really on my feet for the Kidman vs Mysterio match. It felt kind of like the Booker T vs Chris Benoit series without the formality of going 7 matches. Like I had seen their styles evolve, starting to counter each other's moves. It felt like, watching it, that they were having this big culminating blow off match where they knew the other inside and out and there would be no fluke victories or surprise reversal stolen from the jaws of defeat, etc. But the show itself was up and down for me. I never watched ECW back then and really didn't care for matches like the Hardcore Hak vs Bigelow one. One of the cool things about Bam Bam was that he was huge, but could move like he was a slimmed down cruiserweight. Something you didn't get to see in the match. And by that point the sort of cheap thrill of "OMG, there was like 50 weapon shots in that 5 minute match" had already lost its luster for me. The Raven and Saturn match was... yeah. I was definitely fired up with the crowd there. And I wanted them to win. Not like I hated Benoit and Malenko in general... but... Raven and Saturn were kind of just the right fit for the venue and the crowd. Having them go babyface in the ring was a good call. The culture of the Pacific Northwest at the time was going to go that way. I remember loving the match, cheering hard enough my throat got a bit hoarse at it, and the ending was... well it was disappointing. It felt almost out of nowhere as with everything going on you'd be sure that Raven was picking up the win one way or another. I didn't know if that was some audible called in the ring for some reason, or a planned swerve, or what. Just... odd. The time wasting right after made me worried something went wrong, like Raven or Saturn got seriously hurt and that's why the match ended like that, perhaps a bit short. Funny enough I didn't expect when I was there Goldberg was going to win. I expected like Lex Lugar to hit the Bionic Elbow and Ms. Elizabeth to use some weapon herself like the cattle prod again on Goldberg to give Nash the win. So I was surprised that he actually did win out. But was kind of confused about it as well because I wasn't sure what they were doing with it. I kind of felt like Nash needed the win there, and Goldberg kind of just... didn't have anything to do. Sure he was winning every match still since the loss to Nash but it seemed like they had no real idea what to do with him. While I figured Nash and NWO stuff had some stake in it at the time. The DDP win though? Yeah I was on my feet for it. It was the right call for me. DDP was someone I always liked, even if he wasn't this big marquee draw for me personally. But I was so tired of Hogan, Flair, and Sting at the time that I was thinking at various spots "Oh please no!" like when Flair had the figure four locked on or Sting was hitting the Scorpion Death Drop. It was less that I was behind DDP so much as well... I really didn't want the others. Which was pretty odd because I think I was one of about 5 people I saw in my section not cheer Hogan to some level. Though if they had yet another Hogan vs Piper match in Tacoma I think you'd have found everyone cheering Piper instead. Quite a shame that I never saw them do that match up in the Pacific Northwest, where Piper could have really got the reactions. Then again "That doesn't work for me, Brother" I'm sure.

I get that the WWF's crash TV and swearing, boobies and violence drew in the viewers, and I also get that storylines etc. hook viewers, but I didn't mind competitive programs like Mysterio vs Kidman just for the conceit of it. At times, WCW still felt like a sporting event, and I think that's why I still preferred it and stuck it out through the end. WCW forgot what brought it to the dance when it began copying the WWF's crash tv and ESPECIALLY when they brought Russo in. The presentation needed to remain sports-based in comparison to the WWF. DDP getting the belt was well deserved, but the fact they waited so long and for DDP to turn heel to do the honors is just so WCW.
@namikstudios9 ай бұрын
There was a good reason they waited so long. Eric Bischoff and DDP were and still are close friends in real life, so Eric was worried that if DDP was given the world title earlier that people would have thought he only got it because he was friends with the boss. However, by this time in 1999, everyone could see that DDP had earned it himself and truly deserved the belt. Perhaps they were overly cautious but it turned out well.

This is the last of 3 WCW PPVs I paid for during the golden era of the Monday Night Wars. I was diehard WCW (Still am) but I had to work this night so I paid this chick I was friendly with in HS to record this for me. I watched later that night. Happy to see DDP get the win finally. The other 2 PPVs I bought were Halloween Havoc 98 and Starrcade 98. I picked arguably the 3 most infamous shows outside of Bash 96 and Starrcade 97 .

Funny thing is, I didn't expect DDP to win and didn't pay to watch this that Sunday. So I had to get the reairring on Wednesday. However, I did watch Spring Stampede 2000 thinking DDP would beat Jarrett. Go figure. 😂

My last WCW PPV, DDPs nonsensical heel turn (among countless other face heel turns leading up to and after this) just made it unwatchable for me, it was obvious that no one was in charge creatively and the wrestlers just did whatever they felt like at the time regardless of if it made sense or was anything fans wanted.

I remember watching this live and both loving and hating that DDP got the title, even then you knew it was too late.

Why would there be any hate? He deserved it. It should have been sooner, and without that Macho Man BS; but at the end of the day it's still better than most wrestlers get.

@@CurlyFromTheSwirly because they pulled the trigger way too late and everyone knew it, I loved watching DDP grow as a performer from his Diamond Doll and Max Muscle days and this was such a loss because we didnt get the proper top babyface championship run he should have gotten. I love that he's a world champ but hate it came too damn late.

@TC-iw5lg , Agreed, but it was more of too late for WCW than for DDP. WCW probably would have been smarter to have DDP win in the summer of 98 and Goldberg start his championship later. As people have stated, Goldberg vs Hogan at Starcade would have been a big money making event; but let's get back to DDP. In 1998, DDP was the star of WCW, but the company didn't realize it. Even having DDP win at Halloween Havoc would have been better than what they did. WCW actually considered having DDP win, but because Goldberg had some TV appearances coming up they felt he needed to keep the belt or it wouldn't look as good. I have no problem with DDP waiting till 99 for the belt as far as for his time. As I said, that was about WCW becoming a mess. 1999 should have never had that finger poke BS and nWo reunification garbage. The main problem with that was WCW was then focusing on old stars, mainly Hogan and secondly Flair. When what they needed to do was build new stars. (Which WWF was doing.) But even with that mess up, they should have had Hogan loss to Flair sooner, then Flair to DDP without Macho interfering. He should have kept it longer than a month, and therr was no need for Sting to win the belt for 90 minutes. After that, someone again new like Raven could take the belt from DDP by cheating. Having the flock or some of them come help would be great. Then Saturn beats Raven, and DDP helps to settle the score. Sting would beat Saturn and eventually we cycle back to Goldberg getting the bell back from Sting. But WCW had no plan or vision other than Hogan.
