As I walked down the mall, I saw this table with a guy sitting there by himself. I did a double take and recognized him as Virgil. He noticed that I recognized him and came out from behind the table to greet me. He had an assortment of pictures on the table and asked me if I wanted one; I asked how much, he said, "$10". I only had a 5 and told him so. He excitedly exclaimed, "I'LL TAKE IT". So, I gave him the 5 and got a picture with an auto. Also a story to tell. Guy acted like I gave him a 100 dollar bill. To his credit, he was saddled with a horrible gimmick as a rich white man's servant. Perhaps if he had done the Soul Train gimmick in WWE, things may have been better for him.
@Musiclover195 жыл бұрын
Him being Ted DiBiase’s man servant wasn’t a “horrible gimmick.” Because of him being saddled with DiBiase, he got to work with the biggest heel in WWE, which also allowed him to work with the likes of Hulk Hogan, Randy “Macho Man” Savage, Jake “the Snake” Roberts and Andre the Giant. He would have NEVER gotten to work with those stars had he just done the whole soul train thing. They probably should had him do that gimmick once he turned face, but I still doubt he would have been nearly as known as he was as DiBiase’s body guard/man servant.
@JPLooney5 жыл бұрын
@@Musiclover19 Agreed! Virgil's gimmick was what made him, BUT, Its also what hurt him. Virgil was a great Mascot to a wrestler.. when they tried to push him as more than just a mascot.. that's when things became scetchy. Catch22, inorder to be over and seen as more than a servant, someone must lose to him, we cant have someone lose to him because he's seen as just someone's servant..

Back when he was known as Soul Train Jones, he seemed to have a lot of potential working the indies here in Pennsylvania. I actually had no idea that he worked as STJ elsewhere but, then again, that was before the internet so it wasn't easy to know the complete history of wrestlers. Once WWF got their hooks in him, and had him portray a glorified slave, his career was doomed from that point on. Even WCW showed him no respect at all. Particularly in WCW, you could see, in his eyes and in his actions, that he essentially just gave up and really didn't give a shit.

Virgil was a great entertainer. Sure his wrestling abilities were limited, but he moved well in the ring, and he had speed, and if people had taken the time to train him more in the ring and help him to expand his move set, then he could have been a more serious contender, and a force to be reckoned with. It's sad to me that he hasn't been indicted in the WWE Hall Of Fame, because he deserves it. Hopefully they'll do it someday. RIP Virgil.
@GroverJ8310 ай бұрын
His wrestling career makes a lot more sense once you figure he shaved 11 years off his age and really didn't get started until he was his mid 30's. He wasn't on the juice so he was never gonna be a Hoss,he was never gonna be a speedster and started way too late to be a good technical wrestler even if he spent 24/7 training for that.

In 2014,I saw Virgil at outside at impact Wrestling event in New York and we talked about his times in WWF,WCW and undertaker.i ask him,can he sign my WWE encyclopedia and he say yes and he sign it,I ask him how much is for the autograph and he say is free

Yeah, I think a lot of this is just due to dipshits on the internet making fun of some guy for not being top talent. Notice nobody seems to ever interview him and ask him for comments, they just keep up the attacks and bullshit. And there's an undercurrent of racism, too.

He's a pretty regular guest at International Wrestling Cartel. I can't say that I'm a huge fan of his in-ring work, but I respect that there aren't a huge number of ways for an older wrestler to keep making money after their big spot ends. If you haven't lucked into big money and managed it properly, you're pretty much down to peddling your former image.
