Remember what it was like in the 70s before the police really took hold of it, People getting seriously hurt wasn't uncommon and people did get killed. I saw a video recently of football violence in Mexico recently with opposing fans literally being kicked to death by the mob. Large crowd events like this can get seriously out of hand very quickly. The police aren't perfect but them being there is definitely better and they definitely make violence less likely.
