Hi Phil, Thank you for your support mate. This one has got me baffled, to be honest. I don't mind a problem in the pond as long as I know what I'm fighting, but this time I just have no idea what I'm up against. I've just been out there to relax with a glass of wine and to sit and watch my koi for a while, and they're still flicking. It's sending me barmy mate. I'm just doing what Paula suggested and leaving them to recoup from the treatments they've had. Got my fingers crossed 🤞🤞🤞that something happens, just to give me a clue. Thanks again mate, Terry.

Hi Terry . Sorry to hear you`re having problems . I`ve had a similar issue with flashing ect for over a year ! Perameters fine , scrapes clear _ I even did gill scrapes to check for gill flukes which can be hard to spot , but again , nothing .As with yours , theres no outward signs of damage to the fish . I did notice my PH was swinging a lot from morning to night - especially during the hot spell . I was getting a swing of about 0.6 over the day . Might be worth a look . Mine have calmed down a lot since the weather turned cooler and am only getting about 0.25 variation . I think its the algae bloom during hot weather that makes it worse - especially in uncovered ponds . Hope you manage to get on top of it . Good luck !

Hi mate, and thank you. I think a lot of people are having problems this year. The koi hobby does seem to have got to be very hard work for some reason. I do feel sorry for the newcomers entering the hobby. It's not cheap to set up, and then to get a load of problems, as some have does seem a bit unfair. My PH does fluctuate, but by how much I'm not sure, I will have to check. Thanks again mate, take care, Terry.

So sorry to hear you lost the fish mate but be mindful you did all you could to help it, it's the joys of fishkeeping I'm afraid. Very difficult to assess why the flicking continues as you have gone belt and braces to try to stop it and your set up is of a very high standard, The problem with these things is you can very easily end up chasing your tail. Hope you end up all sorted soon mate, got to say I was a little worried to hear you say you might end up stopping keeping Koi but I feel your pain. Hopefully you'll feel better once things settle. Looking forward to watching an update before too long, wishing you all the best I do enjoy your videos.

Hi Graham, 14 year old is not too old for a koi. They can live to 30+ years old in some ponds. In the big freshwater lakes, they can live to be 100. I usually get a summer pond temp of around 23c but it's been 18 or 19c this year. Good to hear all's well your end mate. I still have a problem with flicking which is driving me mental. Hello Terry. Sorry to hear about your loss. I have had a similar problem with Koi flicking but nothing showing on scrapes. I treated for flukes as I usually get a few early season and they are easily dealt with. Still had flicking. Did another scrape, again initially nothing, but at x400 mag I spotted Chilodonella, couldn't see them at a lower magnification. Only finished 3 day treatment 2 days ago, but, fingers crossed, flicking seems to have stopped. Used a Professional grade, Chloramine T based treatment from Cloverleaf, their distribution office is just down the road from my house. Hope this is helpful.

Sorry for your loss Wrighty. 14 years is a long time to have a koi in todays world. Bird poo CAN drop bacteria and other nasties into the pond. I suffered a worse fate, A Farmer near me sprayed his fields... The birds got sprayed getting the worms and grubs off the field.. then took a bath in my pond's spill way and killed the fish. So full pond clean out and back to square one... but this time I will take steps so they birds cannot bathe in the pond..

Hey Terry, Good to se you back, Sorry about the loss, sometimes there is nothing you can do, believe it or not 14 is a reasonable age nowadays for a Japanese koi from some breeders. Forward to your flicking problem. There are many, many, many reasons why a koi is flicking. The most obvious is some kind of parasite, this could be a 1 cell, fluke ore something else. Treating with PP is very harsh to your fish. it burns away the slime coat and that way removes most of the parasites. the skin of the koi is without protection without the slime coat, so it's pretty normal they flick for some days. if you during those days you use Lernex pro (which should be a last resort, because it's a mix of many anti fluke stuff, this can easily cause resistance with the flukes. This makes treatment even harder in the future) their skin is going to be irritated even more causing flicking. So after a treatment give it a week, then do a scrape (Also the gills for gill fluke) if you do not find anything, do not treat. The flicking can also be caused because of stress, (new fish, water temperature change, water compound (KH, GH, Minerals, salts and what so ever), Pollen from gras, flowers, trees etc. If they keep doing it redo the scrape on the 3 fish which flick the most. Gills, Backfire, Cloaca. that is where the parasites will be. Good luck with the fish and keep making your video's
@Wrighty
@Wrighty Жыл бұрын
Hi mate, and thank you, and thanks for the info, it's really appreciated. I've got them in 0.3% salt at the moment, and I will leave it like that for another week as I want to give them a rest and I'll see how it goes from there. It could be the salt that's making them flick at the moment, as you'll know mate, it's a mild irritant that can help them to produce their slime coat. I must admit, it is depressing seeing them flicking all the time lol. I will let you all know how things go, and I might need more help. Thanks again and take care, Terry.

Carp farmer told me years ago to use formalin 40 (sheep dip) believe it or not,i've been using it for over five years and never had a problem with parasites since..I treat every two to three weeks all year round as formalin 40 breaks down over a 24 hr period...25 ltrs cost £30 from mole valley farmers and the ratio i use is 100ml per 1000 gallons...

Sorry about your koi Terry. 😢 Regarding the flicking, Could it be a change in the composition of your water supply. I know some keepers had issues last year with metals suddenly being introduced which were affecting the koi. Might be worth checking with the water company 🤷‍♀️ I think Lau (the French koinnection) got her water tested and found some metals etc. might be worth having a chat with her. 👍🏻

It's horrible losing one of your fish ☹ I'm sure birds can transfer pathogens. My old pond at my parents suddenly had duckweed during last summer's heatwave, it had never had duckweed before. Duckweed is a nuisance, but a week or two later the fish got really Ill, nothing 'normal', it affected their nervous system. I think it was an amoebic infection, it killed most of the fish very quickly, I've never felt as helpless. The pond at my parents is very big and birds like to drink and bathe in a shallow area, so I'm pretty sure a bird that brought the duckweed also brought the infection, the high temps helped this sort of pathogen.

Hi Terry - we spoke on the phone already so again, I am sorry about the sanke. Not much more you could do. When it's liver and kidneys... I am not keen on PP when it's for flukes, there is no real need for it other than stressing them out even more when they feel already week because of a parasite. The Lernex Pro is good enough to penetrate the mucus and stick to the mucus. i think it's more the dosage that sometimes is not strong enough. I hope they are better since we spoke over the phone. Cute little bird in the bird bath. I love watching that. I cant believe how much the shusui has grown! Nice update other than the sad news. Take care. Speak soon

Hiya Wrighty nice to see a new vid up even though things are haywire atm, concerning your swollen Koi although I have no answer, but last summer one of my goldfish who is usually the smallest and looks the most ill at the best of times, whitish and covered in lots of like black spots, hence his name spot :) started to swell up and segregated himself from the others, after a week or so I expected the worse as he had swollen nearly double if not more in size with raised scales like you mentioned :( I had the plastic bag coffin at the ready and waited, he seemed to hang on for weeks and weeks still as swollen to bursting, then God only knows how but he a actually recovered, all the swelling went after about a month and he made it through the disgusting and obligatory 8 or 9 month winter with no pond heating, and is still swimming around quite happily to this very day, I'm still amazed :D Hope you find the problem and all is well, take care matey.

The only thing I can think of is whether your UV filter needs the bulb changing. I'm not personally experienced with them beyond their theoretical use so it's only mentioned out of desperation. Others have suggested all the other things I could imagine therefore the flicking must be down to bacteria or some other microorganisms. You're on the proper path by eliminating one system element at a time to try and diagnose the exact source of the infection. The trouble with having many angles of plumbing connected to your pond system is that a clump of muck could accumulate in some unseen dead spot and you'd never know about it. I don't know if you can get a full lab analysis of your pond water done locally but it might be cheaper and more productive than trial and error. I feel sad about your loss. All I can offer is this kind of generic advice. Do keep us updated and, more than ever, happy ponding!
@Wrighty
@Wrighty Жыл бұрын
Hello mate, and thanks. The bulbs in the UV I have last 2 years, and I change it last year. You are right about the plumbing, I do have plenty of it that could be a problem, but the koi are clean, so I don't think it's bacterial. I'm going to have a look at what they are putting in our water these days. I believe it changed a lot after covid, and they're adding twice as much chloramine, which could cause the flicking. Thanks so much for the input mate, it's all worth looking at, and it's really appreciated. You take care, and I will keep you posted. Terry.

Awww man sorry for your loss Terry that is really mind boggling you've done pp and fluke treatments so theoretically you shouldn't have anything in there. Hi Jamie, and thanks mate. I don't think it's the new plants as they're not quite overhanging the pond, plus this has been going on way before I introduced them. But like you say mate, it's still worth checking. In all my years of keeping koi, I've never come across this before. I still have absolutely no idea why they're flicking. I'm going with what Paula said at the moment, and let them rest and see how it goes. They have had a lot of treatment. I'll let you know how it goes mate, take care, Terry.

Hi Terry, i read somewhere that the only reason we get rid of the brown water after using pp, is because Japanese breeders didn't want the public to see dirty water in their ponds. Also, thiosulfate is said to be gentler to use rather than hydrogen peroxide, which can shock the fish. Also the brown residue (Manganese Oxide) is said to enrich the biofilms in moving beds. Glad you removed the bog filter, i would go further and remove the nitrate filter, both are dirt traps (in my opinion) but you still have the nicest pond on the interweb!
@Wrighty
@Wrighty Жыл бұрын
Hi Nigel, and thank you for your kind comments mate, it's really appreciated. I have heard the Thiosulfate is supposed to be as good as the Hydrogen Peroxide, but I think people use the Hydrogen Peroxide as it does leave you with gin clear water the next day. I was thinking of having the bog filter in a different place, and instead of having gravel in it, I was going to just have the plants stood in it, still in their pots, which will be a lot easier to clean. Must admit, my nitrates have gone up since I took it off. Thanks again mate, and take care, Terry.

Sorry for the loss Terry, i commented in your last video about PP with the calculator and i can only say positive things about it at the correct dosage. I can honestly say all the while ive used PP ive never had problems afterwards. If anything the next day the fish have brightened up. Very strange with the flashing like you say! i do believe nowadays we use chemicals too much which has caused resistance unfortunately. Last year i had skin flukes and i put most of the available fluke treatments in the pond and they were still dancing on the slide. The only thing that worked for me was using Fluke P or M at full dose day one, half dose day 2 and another half dose on day 3 with UV off. I read somewhere that fluke treatments used to be double strength to what they are now, hence them not working so well. Either way like you say it isnt easy keeping koi anymore. Back in the day apparently salt worked for pretty much all parasites, wish that was still the case today. Alot of bacterial problems nowadays too, getting way to complex for the general hobbyist! Almost need a degree to keep koi 😅 Great to see the content though terry, always enjoy the videos 🙂
@Wrighty
@Wrighty Жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, and thanks mate. Yes, the PP went ok, but I think the fluke treatment before and after didn't help matters. Salt was the first thing we used years ago, and a lot of koi keepers used table salt as well. We also had in-pond gravel filters back then, similar principle to what was used in aquariums and they were only cleaned out once a year. I think we are breading koi with no real immune system. I've had mine in salt for a few days now and they do seem to be getting better (flashing calming down) salt is a mild irritant to them which does help restore their slime coat, as you'll know mate. I'm going to give them another week in the 0.30% salt and see how things are then. Thanks again mate, take care, Terry.
@Ads-1991
@Ads-1991 Жыл бұрын
@@Wrighty you too Terry :) and exactly that! We've put them in such clean almost sterile environments that they unfortunately have very little immunity, kind of caused the issues ourselves from wanting crystal clear sparkly ponds to enjoy the fish, and through constant treating meaning they don't need the immunity to build resistance. I wish I had koi back in the day, I'd have liked to have seen how simple it was. Keep up with the great videos Terry, hopefully you're ontop of the issue now and it's sorted 🤞🙂

I had a tropical fish (which I know aren’t koi) that was huge (on the left side too) it was a female & I used (Freeze Dried Daphnia Fish Food) along with a parasite, fungal and bacterial water treatment (not at the same time) with just a bit of garlic powder in that food for the immune system, I read somewhere that pea’s (human can pea’s) are good to make fish go?! Or how about EGGS/ SEMEN are all the fish getting rid of there mating essentials? Or how about the GH or KH levels or ph? I’m sure your OCD anal (like myself) on all water test levels! But thank you for the suggestion, it's really appreciated. He did start to lose some of his size, and was looking a lot better, which I think was down to the 0.60% salt he was in. But unfortunately, I came down one morning and he was floating on the top, so he must have gone in the night. All my water parameters are spot on. I just have to put it down to being a part of the hobby I'm afraid. It was a shame, as he was a really nice koi at nearly 60cm. Thanks again Deb and you take care, Terry.
