@EvolutionSquare About the second commandment, I think you might have misinterpreted it, he probably means humour is the oxygen to relieve the tension after a tense moment, e.g - Tim: "well... We're back... In the car again". Basically what you said would be better.

Honestly I don't think it's controversial at all for wanting to have less dinosaur screen time. The whole reason why the dinosaurs were so effective in the first and even second film was that they weren't on screen every 5 minutes or there was a limited amount of species we could see in the roster to begin with. Makes it to where when they DID show up, it was an event worth getting excited for. Hell, even the first Jurassic World got this right to some extent. So I'm all for having less is more!

@@EvolutionSquare Exactly! Thank you! 👏 And this is coming from someone who likes the dinosaurs immensely! Saying I want to see them less doesn't mean I don't love em, it's just that when I want them on screen... I want them to be more than just glorified action scenes. You know? You don't want to eat a chicken that's just bone... you want a chicken with a GOOD amount of meat on it.

100% agree with "less is more", and actually I don't really like the constant addition of new species, or more specifically, I don't like how all these new species are just suddenly appearing with zero explanation as to who made them, how they got there, why were they made in the first place, etc. There are some new species I'd still like to see in the franchise, don't get me wrong, but I'd like them to be integrated in a way that feels natural or has actual reason behind it, instead of suddenly popping up out of nowhere.

I love the first Jurassic Park movie for a variety of reasons, especially its aesthetics and how every visible aspect of the park was designed. From the helmets with the logo to the gift shop and its merch, with designs that I think are characteristic of the '90s. It’s nice to see Easter eggs from the first movie for me because of that, since I was left wanting more, but I agree that it’s nostalgia bait. However, I think my desire to explore the original park more thoroughly will be fulfilled with Jurassic Park Survival :)

I agree with all of these, one of my gripes with the World trilogy is that it seemed to have been influenced by the quippy humour of the MCU, and that didn't always work there. The ones that take themselves more seriously like Winter Soldier, Civil War and Infinity War are probably some of the best entries in that saga. Some of my favourite scenes in the Park films have no dinosaurs in them whatsoever, such as in the first film I love Hammond meeting Grant and Ellie in Montana, and Ellie's conversation with Hammond about Petticoat Lane. Malcolm's meeting with Hammond at the start of the Lost World I love. Yes it's exposition heavy but it works, not a word wasted. I've often thought before as well that Rexy and Blue sort of became "heroes", and now I want to make Velociraptors scary again. The JP3 Sorna raptors, I would love to see them return, and discredit Mills' claim that Blue was the last of her kind but apparently that Dino Tracker website shows those particular raptors on the mainland. I feel Rebirth *really* needs to be solid, I have high hopes and expectations for it. Who knows, maybe we'll finally get a first appearance of the Metriacanthosaurus, a species I've wanted to see outside of Jurassic World Evolution since 1993.

the point isn't about characters, it's about species (and I hope you didn't skip the part where I explained these are MY rules, not Koepp's). While I'm sure the movie will have plenty of species, we don't how many yet. Technically, it could literally be as few as 3 :P
@carloscarvajal3362

@@EvolutionSquare Sure, I know you are talking about "YOUR rules", still, my point is that it´s not realistic at this point. Let´s get real, we have at least 3 species confirmed (technically four). But that is not how it will play, there are plenty of hints from leaks and interviews to know that at least we gonna have 6 to 7 species. Also, you are talking about "overstuffing" in general (the "more is less" stuff) not only with dinosaur species (8:49), so... again it is already overstuffed with several characters, secrets inside the ruins, the "collect them all" plot, the rescue mission, the pandemic subplot. I agreed with your wishful thinking and rules, but... It´s just not realistic at this point.
@EvolutionSquare
@EvolutionSquare 13 сағат бұрын
@@carloscarvajal3362 sorry I really think you are blending/misinterpreting some of my "rules" there :\ And I don't want to argue, but it's weird having words put in my mouth. How do you timestamp me saying "don't overstuff it with nostalgia bait" and interpret that as me saying "don't have too many characters/plot points"? I actually think a lot of characters could be a good thing, because it means more dispensible characters for some dinosaur-inflicted deaths, as we all know the main characters will be protected by plot armor. And sure, JWR seems to have a lot going on in terms of plot (although the "pandemic" and "collect them all" are part of the same plot and the "secret" almost certainly ties into it as well), but JP had more going on than just "survive dino island" too. If handled well, complexity in plot threads woven together doesn't have to be a bad thing. And as far as the species go, let's say we do get 6 or 7 (even though I loathe the leak/rumor culture that surrounds this films, I don't doubt we get that many species, likely more). That's on par with JP1 though. That's perfectly fine. Even if you double that number, we are still miles away from the 30 (!) species Dominion crammed in.

@@EvolutionSquare Cool, But I´m not. In general, you propose "simple/focused" (I agreed with that), but sadly is too late for that because of what I already stated (especially after Mattel´s listing). That´s my point, no hard feelings. 🦖

@thatoneguy6432
@thatoneguy6432 9 сағат бұрын
Here's my 10 rules that I think make the perfect Jurassic film 1. Entertaining characters with well-written backstories and good actors to follow them. (so not JP3) 2. New things. (Either one new species, one new plotpoint THAT WORKS, or something to separate the new film away from the past series. Not overboard, but something.. good.) 3. Consistency. (Build up is extremely important to any film, especially one that's a mix of adventure and horror, so keeping that buildup lore accurate is vital to that films success.) 4. The Hybrid Rule. (I personally like hybrids.. when they are done right. I believe design is essential to them as is their uniqueness. NEVER HAVE THE SAME THING AGAIN. For instance, the Indominus Rex was well done because it was the point of the story, it drove the story with every scene it was in, and had people guessing on what it's true nature was until Owen's "That thing's part raptor." THAT is what needs to stay, not the Indoraptor's "Ehh, we took the Indominus dna and shoved in some more raptor." Do it right, be original.) 5. Hero vs Villains rule ( You cannot deny that even the first film has this. Remember the ending scene where the T-rex "Saves the day"? That is Heroism done right. The trex was very organic in the start, and to the end it still felt organic even with saving the group's life. Naturalism WITH heroism & villainism. Blend it up, you got a good dinosaur action film (SO NOT THE GIGA.) 6. Horror is Oxygen. (The scarier... *the better.*) 7. Blood & Gore. ( I know Jurassic World was more "friendly" than Jurassic Park was in this department, but I think it's time we went back, got some good violence here and again.) 8. Fights. (If your gonna do a Dinosaur fight scene, DO IT RIGHT. Stop holding one species back in the sake of plot armor, the Trex is such a wimp nowadays because it always needs assistance. The First movie is the ONLY film where the trex WON A FIGHT ON IT'S OWN.) 9. Human Genetics (No more clones, no more Human-dino hybrids.) 10. Inaccurate Dinosaurs (I know the first movie was made with the most up-to-date information at the time, but as we change the look of the dinosaurs to fit the common standard, they loose that quality of what makes Jurassic Park still special, and it is a MASSIVE plothole. So, make newer designs more accurate, but stop changing pre-existing ones. This isn't a documentry, this is a movie.)

The way I see it, what he means by humour is oxygen, it is a bit of breathing room in a movie. The first and second Jurassic Park's have many suspenseful moments, the humour allows the audience to be able to take a breath, and relax a bit more when the characters do. Humour can also be designed as to match a charismatic character, as the character of Ian Malcolm definitely is. The addition of humour, when used correctly, shouldn't take away from the thrills and suspense, but can actually make the film more comfortable and enjoyable. Realistic science or somewhat believable science in a film is a good idea too, as the world films did seem to ignore that, and it would make for a more grounded and authentic story to be written here. Removing the idea of hero and villain dinosaurs is a good idea too, the only exceptions to those ideas being hybrids as they can be a malfunctioned experiment with a corrupted mind that can make them evil. But making dinosaurs just be dinosaurs is essential to a believable story in my mind at least. Making them real animals that just eat, drink, sleep and try to survive, rather than being portrayed as an animal that be the saviour by the end, or one with malicious intent that doesn't hesitate to be a menace to the characters. Having actual three-dimensional characters is what made the first film interesting, every character had good points, were resourceful and actually intelligent and thinking logically, and weren't Marvel superheroes, they were just people. Let people just be people. When it comes to less dinosaurs, that is something that made the first films effective, even though many people will show up for the dinosaurs, they're not designed to be the main characters in these films. There can however still be a good number of dinosaurs in the film, but unlike Dominion, every species does not need a dedicated scene, instead allowing some species to just exist in the background. There could be a scene where they look out over a valley from a high vantage point and see herds of herbivores like some Brachiosaurus browsing on trees, Gallimimus or other flocking dinosaurs running across the plain, maybe a few ceratopsians, some hadrosaurs, and the odd stegosaur or ankylosaurid, perhaps even some pterosaurs soaring in the skies above. Jurassic Park 3 I think did this quite well, by having the Ceratosaurus, Corythosaurus and Ankylosaurus as a fleeting presence rather than a focus species. Particularly with the river boat scene and the fly over at the start, there were lots of dinosaurs in those scenes, but they weren't focus species. Keeping the continuity is important too, like as much as I'd like to believe the prologue wasn't actually a reflection of the real Late Cretaceous, instead being some propaganda constructed by Biosyn for marketing purposes, it is canon, but then again, dinosaur designs can and will seem to change in this next film. But at least not disregarding all the events of the large 6 movies, 2 short films and 2 series, (though I would prefer the robots from CCS4-5 to not be canon). Introducing more unique and interesting species from prehistory is a lot better than hybrids and mutants, like some of my top species I want to see introduced would be stuff like Inostrancevia (Giant Gorgonopsid), Megaraptor, Deinocheirus, Titanoboa, Sarco or Deinosuchus and of course the plethora of cenozoic species that can be used in some truly tense and potentially scary scenes, like imagine portraying the Megaraptor like a leopard, waiting in trees for prey to wander below or a Deinocheirus with algae and feathers hanging feathers that mimic moss and lichen. Less or no nostalgia bait is also a big one, though the Spinosaurus, if it is added in Rebirth can be seen that way. It is however a species that still offers a lot of potential, especially based on recent discoveries about it. It's a cool dinosaur, and one that has been absent from the big screen for long enough. One final thing I would like to mention would be in regards to animal designs, they need to look and feel natural, not be designed like movie monsters like the Giganotosaurus, Baryonyx and Dimetrodon. They don't have to be 100% paleo-accurate either, they just need to be good to look at and be a believable representation of the species it is supposed to be. But good designs can also take inspiration from some of the greatest stretches in paleo-art, adding in features of the animals that don't fossilise well and run wild with some of the possibilities, like air sacs, feathers and pycnofibres, dewlaps, colours and keratinous ornaments of various sorts.

The trailer scene from The Lost World is one of the greatest displays of building tension in cinema history. It's insanely good. Make the new film tense, and draw out the tension. Don't blow your wad prematurely. Also, focus on the people. Make us care about them all, not just the good guys but the grey guys, too. There is not a single person in these films that the audience should want to see die. All else will follow.

But... The plot they showed is basically a retcon. Remember, the dinosaurs out in the World and now the are isolated again. Also, I´m hearing about less characters and species for a more condensed story, but at the same time they have stranded teenagers, characters recovering blood samples and some Alien vs Predator ancient aliens ruins with a big secret inside, the biggest dinosaurs in land, water, and sky (pokemon style) long grass Velociraptors. Sure is very condensed. There are red flags in the horizon, but hey I´m a Jurassic fan so deception is nothing new for me 😆

Generally, rules are very useful as a foundation, so I'm quite happy to see that David Koepp is putting thought into things. Series bibles seemed to be a lost art. Your 8th rule (I think, the one about less is more) is actually quite sound, depending on what kind of film you're wanting to make. Suspenseful films rely on tension & build-up, which requires economy & restraint. Since this film is doing "back to basics" Jurassic Park, then it absolutely makes sense to focus on a smaller number of dinosaurs rather than a whole cavalcade. I just wish they didn't wipe out the Jurassic World concept before we even got a chance to really see it properly. The problem is that Jurassic has been *the* dinosaur franchise for 30 years, with very few even approaching it: this means that we've had, at best, a few one-off films & some series (Primeval, Terra Nova, Dinotopia). For all Dominion's faults, it at least presented new possibilities, & I still really dislike that the best the writers could come up with was to go "back to basics" in this way. Still, there's always hope. If Rebirth is successful (as well as Primitive War & Flowervale Street) then maybe we'll get that Guillermo Del Toro directed/inspired Dinotopia film that I've been wishing for since I was a wee guy!

With the dinosaurs being animals point. I wish Jurassic World was better, because the idea of the nature of hybrids being put in question as real animals or monsters due to them not knowing their place in nature is really interesting to me. Like how the Indominus is not really evil, just confused and scare, or the indoraptor actually being evil due to the function he was made for. I wished they handled it better

One other rule id like is, just because its not a huge carnivore doesnt mean it cant be dangerous. We can always have a movie about a smaller animal hunting humans, we had that in fallen kingdom and to an extent the lost world and jp3 and it was flawless. Its tiring seeing big carnivore number 7 fight big carnivore number 1 give us somethign else besides the big guys, but alsomake herbivores scary. The lystro theri are perfect examples of this, not at all nice despite being plant eaters, and maybe even more evil than the carnivores

Since David Koepp created a pasterpiece as such as Jurassic Park, I trust him on writing Jurassic World: Rebirth.

HARD agree on less species. My biggest critique of Dominion is how fleeting each dino's screentime was. Thankfully, I like to look at it as Dominion having done all the heavy lifting for the future movies in the franchise, because now Rebirth can pull from the Quetz, Pyropraptor, Theri, Dimetrodon, etc) since they already have their models made but have been barely utilized 😂

I wonder if he means 'oxygen' for the 'action' bits - like oxygen feeds fire? So you need the humour to feed into the action/scary bits - light making the dark more impactful? I can't believe the guy who wrote the first two and is talking about that type of tone would be talking about making the new films funnier? I have hope! :)

Hybrids are one aspect I really like cause it’s the next logical step in genetic engineering and altering IMO. Keep the real species the focus but don’t mind sprinkling in one or two hybrids or mutants. Out of the 50 plus canon species we’ve seen on screen, four are hybrids (indominus, indoraptor, scorpius Rex and spinoceratops) and maybe the rumored one for rebirth ( just saying if there’s smoke there’s fire I agree with most of your ideas except with that one with hybrids

I think that the trailer might be shown during the next Superbowl. A lot of movies have their first trailers revealed during that game.

a lot of movies that release much later than summer ;) I think it's very possible superbowl will be the first trailer, but I don't think it's *most* likely to get a first trailer that late.

I think from my understanding of writing, humor being oxygen means to me that it will be used to relieve tension after intimidating, scary moments. When you come out of a particularly scary roller coaster ride, the first thing you'll do is breathe after you've been holding your breath the whole time. I could be entirely wrong, but I, like many others, hope the movie doesn't take the marvel direction and decide to be humorous in moments where it's simply not required.

I think one rule would be: foreshadow. The first movie had loads of foreshadowing, including in jokes like the helicopter where grant found a way to make the seatbelt work with two female parts, and the dinos find a way to

Ya know I had a theory a while back. Like Jurassic Park and Jurassic world (The first movies in their perspective trilogy) would be the best out of their own trilogy. Basically I’m trying to say that my theory is that every first movie in the 2 JP franchises did the best. So I think JW: Rebirth will be a really good movie with the other 2 movies after it being worse.

I hope every Dino’s they use have a meaning to the story or be the key to push characters to grow. So less is better, just like Jurassic park. Every Dino’s have its place in the story.

I just hope Rebirth dismantles Chaos Theory and forces that part of the jurassic franchise to be more grounded and get rid of the outlandish gimmicks of the franchise. I'm half expecting Season 03 of Chaos Theory to take place on the moon and we get dinosaurs in space and the family from battle at big rock to somehow be involved with it all

Honestly, the only hybrids/mutations that would actually make sense are the “natural” ones that could occur. Specifically, I’m referring to traits like albinism (where an animal is born entirely white due to mutation). More realistic hybrids that could occur between two related species breeding together (like a horse mating with a donkey and creating a mule). And even simple or complex deformities that a dinosaur is born with! I know in the video you’re referring to hybrids like the I-Rex and Indoraptor but these are just thoughts I wanted to share! Are there any other mutations that would be interesting to see in dinosaurs?

I share your opinions, specially: Dinosaurs are wild animals, they're not monsters, they're not villains, the're not heroes. And I think thats one of the reasons it makes me dislike World franchise because they ruined the portrait of T-rex and Velociraptor as animals. The other one is: Less is more. Which the first movie did amazingly well, it had fantastic scenes that made feel special the dinosaurs, to make shine their characteristics. Amazing video as always Evo.

Please please please be a good movie. I didn't HATE Dominion unlike most others, had some fantastic moments like the therri scenes; however I won't lie and say it was even close to the other movies. Imagine Rebirth and JWE3 are amazing... it will be a great year for us dino loving folks.
