We are from Kerala, India and people from Kerala will have a broad smile on their face moment you mention the name POLAND. It is because of a famous dialogue from an old comedy movie. I planned to visit Poland couple of times earlier but could not due to different reasons. Finally we visited last week (son, wife, and I) and spent couple of days in Wroclaw. We were bit skeptical and cautious but Wroclaw surprised us especially the Christmas market. It is the best Christmas market we ever visited and we really enjoyed our stay there. One best thing about Wroclaw Christmas market is it looks pretty nice even during day time. Thank you POLAND!

So yeah...lots and lots of history here :) oh, btw... next time visit Piwnica Świdnicka... It's the oldest restaurant in Europe... First historic facts about this restaurant are dated about 1273...Bills from 1332 have been preserved, in which the fact of importing Świdnicki beer was recorded. The entrance to the restaurant (it's a basement) is from the south side of the Old Town Hall building. Enjoy :)

You know what, I was in Wrocław yesterday on the market and it was interesting. I know this city is your favorite in Poland. The eyes don't lie. I also saw comments and accidentally you touched a certain complex. Poles have a complex towards richer countries in Europe, especially Germany. The second thing is the "patch" of the post-communist country and calling Poland an Eastern European country. This has a pejorative meaning - shithole. We are Catholics, we use the Latin alphabet, we love freedom and we hate regimes. Many people know nothing about Poland and use sterotypes. Our location in the middle of the continent is our curse during the war, a blessing in peace. 400 years ago Poland was one of the most powerful countries in Europe - three times larger than now. We were the only ones to conquer Russia. In the nineteenth century we were not on the maps. Because of this we have a split personality. Another thing is the trauma of World War II. Never say "Polish death camps" it hurts especially if a family member was murdered in a concentration camp - like my uncle. I wanted to share with you this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKrOZKehhbOipZI Turn on subtitles. Norman Davies, Microcosm: Portrait of a Central European City, London 2002 The best gingerbread in Poland is from Toruń. Gothic gem (UNESCO) and hometown of Copernicus. December 6 is Saint Nicholas Day. Children get presents then. July 26 is Saint Anne's Day. Trevor, don't show up on that day without a gift. I recommend then visiting Zieleniec near Duszniki Zdrój. Tomorrow is Christmas Eve and I wish you to spend it with your family. Regards Szymon.

"Hollywood’s war with Poland" ... www.amazon.com/Hollywoods-Poland-1939-1945-M-B-B-Biskupski/dp/0813125596 @Delightful Travellers: I speak German, so I chased my text in Polish over the German google translator. the translation fits Kino w latach trzydziestych i czterdziestych XX wieku było najważniejszym medium w USA (era telewizji nadeszła dopiero w latach pięćdziesiątych). Podczas II wojny światowej w USA rocznie produkowano ponad 500 filmów. Większość Amerykanów chodziła do kina kilka razy tygodniowo. Amerykanie kochali produkcje przemysłu filmowego i wierzyli w nią bezkrytycznie. Kino kształtowało gusta i poglądy (o wiele bardziej niż robiła to wcześniej prasa). Nakładem Fijorr Publishing Company ukazała się książka profesora historii z Central Connecticut State University M. B. B. Biskupskiego "Hollywood's War With Poland, 1939-1945" (Nieznana wojna Hollywood przeciwko Polsce 1939-1945) na temat negatywnego obrazu Polaków w filmach amerykańskich w czasie IIWS i źródeł tych nieprzychylnych stereotypów. Biskupski w swej pozycji, zdecydowanie bolesnej dla Polaków mających irracjonalny sentyment do USA, opisuje prosowiecką i antypolską propagandę Hollywood podczas II wojny światowej. Autor jako przykłady produkcji powielających antypolskie stereotypy podaje takie filmy jak ("In Our Time" W naszych czasach) i ("None Shall Escape" Nikt nie ucieknie) oba z 1944, a także popularną komedię ("To Be Or Not To Be" Być, albo nie być) z 1942. WARNER BROS, the Warner surname was perhaps originally "Wonsal" ---> Aaron, Szmul, Hirsz and Itzhak Wonsal (wiki 🙄) p. p. s. Wesołych i radosnych świąt bożego narodzenia ... 🎄

I've never actually seen ppl eating these gingerbread thingies. I've seen them mostly as decoration. Once I wanted to bite into one and almost broken my tooth. Must have been decorating the tree for at least couple of seasons.

Not sure how I feel about the title "This can't be Poland". Whatever do you mean? I'd rather not even think about it... Those cone-shaped holiday trees are pretty much everywhere, usually around shopping centres, and most people think they're ugly for how artificial they look. To be fair, it's just a metal scaffolding wrapped in plastic chains and ornaments.

Wroclaw was a German city and called Breslau until 1945, when all 650,000 German inhabitants were expelled, like the other 3.4 million Germans from surrounding Silesia. This makes Wroclaw, formerly Breslau, the largest city on earth, of which the entirety of its population was expelled. They all had to flee beyond the newly established border river, the Lusatian Neisse. All nice old buildings in Wroclaw from before 1945 were either built by Germans or rebuilt by Poles after the war. The city was basically a German-speaking city from around 1300 till 1945. The descendants of the Slavic founders of the village from before 1300 were of course also expelled in 1945 since they had become German-speaking over time. One wonders what they did with the extensive German graveyards with all the German graves. The old houses of the city keep wondering why they don't understand the new inhabitants anymore. And therefore, it is disrespectful to talk about this city exclusively in a Polish context because most of the architecture you admire there, are the buildings from before 1945.

My favourite thing in polish markets is the lack of police in the UK we have all these police and even anti terrorist barriers so cars can't be used to murder people. It is a depressing elephant in the room
