Extra $14k? I paid $29.5k for my 2022 WRX. CTR were going for $60k plus near me… it’s not $31k plus better car than a WRX. If we’re up to $55k+, screw CTR and WRX, I’m just gonna get an M2 manual.

I got my 22 Limited for 31.5.. i got an CTR in SGP before that, and it was a "steal" at 37k ... it handled amazing, but after the honey moon phase it just wasnt that great anymore.. If i took it to the track which i didnt, it might have made more sense. Plus you cant mod them, or you kill everything honda did to make them special.

Agreed. I don’t think the CTR is even remotely close to its MSRP price either. Owners try to give all this hogwash arguments that it’s the best handling FWD ever blah blah blah. Cool. On paper. Sure. But how often are they exploiting the cars handling capabilities on a track? Not often if at all. A good driver in a WRX or GTI could easily keep up with a CTR in a canyon. If the CTR had something more special than it just being 2.0T and FWD, then I might be more supportive of its price. But that’s all it really is…a 2.0T FWD car. Its price reflect more of its name badge and internet “hype” more than anything. I would have just as much fun in a much cheaper GTI, and probably more fun in an AWD WRX, on the daily, for a lot less money!

I sold my vb for the new type r. Really loved my vb and now totally love the type r. My main gripe is how quiet the Honda is. It is so quiet that it is somewhat difficult to drive at first. I kinda miss that I felt like I could park the wrx anywhere and never really stress about it. The type r gets a lot more attention than I was expecting and it stresses me out a bit, parking in busy places.

Hopefully by next year I'll be doing a k series swap and awd conversion. I get more props in my civic than my vb unfortunately. My civic is more of just a daily cruiser for now that I don't have to worry about getting state reffed in. The subie only comes out at night

For me, alot of it comes down to weather. I had a tuned 23 civic si and I would always say it was basically a baby type r making around 270 whp and around 300wtq. I live in Oregon and any time the roads were even barely damp, the si would spin in first if you were trying to even be a little aggressive. I also owned a 21 type r and they are fun cars now doubt, but for the money and performance and even the sounds, WRX takes the W for me. Right now my wrx makes 365whp and 415wtq and I can put all of that to the ground and barely make the tires chirp. Its hard to justify the price difference for me taking those things into consideration. Now if ur canyon driving on dry surface and no cars in front of you, for sure, go type r, but any condition other than dry surface and Im choosing the wrx all day.

A note on tuning: From reading about these cars, I believe the pcm has to be jailbroken before rewriting can take place. One could clone a factory ecu for if the car ever has to go to the dealer for warranty work, unless you find a more lenient dealership that doesn't look down on modifications as much as others may.

I am happy with my choice with a TR and I know I could not outright afford a type R. Awais, good review and I appreciate you comparing the two cars indirectly. A type R is great if you can afford one, but I know they marked them up and financing is less favorable on top of that. I was able to get my TR under MSRP. They do come off from the mounting point on the windshield daily easily and the mounting mechanism is stupid finicky to reinstall it on. They are nice automobiles, and the pinnacle of what you can extract from a small car. Trouble is that the 'classic' hot hatch was, by definition, AFFORDABLE. What good is spending performance money and getting performance, you sort of expect it don't you? At $45k (if you can get one at this price) you can also choose a nice A4, 330i, etc. and get AWD as an option (330i). Fewer people would bother you in traffic, and you'd also have quiet when you want it and more comfort. The WRX is one of the last of the breed that you can get a $30-32k and you get AWD and more displacement to play with if you tune. I had a '96 Acura GS-R that I adored, that 5 speed was silkier, shorter and faster to shift than anything I've owned in the decades since.

Apples and Oranges Awais... FWD vs AWD... WRX vs CTR (STI is closer comparison) CTR is a dedicated track car (that somehow still overheats lol) ... The answer is no, its not worth anything over MSRP.. in fact I think that is too much. They had it right with the FK8 when you could get them around 35-38k... I owned an FK8, and while it handled like it was on rails, once i started modding the car for power, its limitations from FWD became obvious very quickly. If you just want something for track duty on the weekends. the CTR is a great car, if you could get them at a decent price... which you cannot.

@HeavyMetalWRX 3 ай бұрын
Truthfully I don't think it's a dedicated track car. It's a car that can do great on the track ( like other fun performance cars) but it still is a street car first. They did still cut some corners that prevents it from being as good ok the track as it could be. I wish I had the ability to take all these cars to a track alone and do reviews. Now that would be a dream.

Ever since they've turbocharged the TypeR's - I have been on the fence. I miss the old days of high revving lower displacement 4 cylinders - I miss my EG Hatch (and the GSR swap I had - it was my favorite of all) - a friend of mine had a B16B EK Hatch (kind of a type R clone) - it was phenomenal to drive - yes they lacked on torque - but winding an engine out to 9k rpms (in some cases beyond) was an experience in itself - especially hearing the change over and the intake roar. I miss those days. I just recently bought a ridgeline - was eyeing the WRX hard - then the Outback (I needed something with a bit more ground clearance and to be honest at 42 - kind of over daily driving a manual trans car (especially in traffic) ). I also looked at Tacoma's - at the end the Ridgeline had more of a discount because its not bro macho looking or whatever - but i know the J series and I know they can go the distance - my wife also bought a new Honda as well - imo for a daily driver you can't go wrong with either a Honda, Toyota or Subaru - which is my preference moving forward - after 15 years of owning nothing but american (brands) vehicles. I also have a '12 X5 35D (diesel) and a 2011 335D as my weekend cars - i maybe selling both and getting a WRX soon as a weekend car.

Interesting point of view to see your review. I did also drive a CTR before buying a car, I also drove the WRX, Golf R, GR Corolla and Elantra N. The CTR felt huge to me inside and I hated that it didn't have a hand brake, I don't see many people point this out. An enthusiast car without a hand brake? It's also not a true hatchback, it's really a liftback, much the same as my wife's Prius which nobody calls a hatchback. It's also a 4 seater, hence your confusion with the rear cup holders as there is no rear middle seat. I ultimately bought a GR Corolla and couldn't be happier. For less money I got AWD, a heated steering wheel, heated seats, a real handbrake, a true hot hatch, and it seat 5 people, not that I really use the back seat much. The reason I picked it, it was the most fun to drive of all the cars, and it wasn't even close on the back roads that I tested them all on.

The CTR is overpriced, the WRX is overpriced, the Golf R, GTI…basically everything brand new, that is somewhat sporty, is overpriced nowadays. The only sporty vehicle I can think of that isn’t overpriced from the factory is the Elantra N. But then you have to suck up the multi-year payments on it, and though it might be fun in the beginning, after the “honeymoon phase” is over, those monthly payments are going to hit hard… Best bet is to buy vehicles after a couple years. Still get the same car. Still have the factory, and possibly, even added on dealer extended warranty’s. Still get the same driving experience, but it all costs you way less.

Here in CA most stealerships are selling the Type R for $55-$60k. A huge markup over msrp. Now if some got one for msrp, congrats but it’s unlikely. Also the Acura integra type S is so much better than the type r and only supposed to be incrementally more expensive. However again it is grossly over priced at $65k with markups. I say the market should skip anything in the 300hp range for $50+k. That’s ridiculous. Honestly after the WRX I would just go straight to a M3 or 440i gran coupe, or even an Acura TLX type S. For the money you have to spend on a Type R you can almost buy a S Spec Integra, and if you're that close to an S Spec Integra, what else can you buy? 14K more means a hell of a lot of power, handling, and reliability for a WRX. The WRX is a decent sized AWD sedan, and doesn't look like a car a kid with a rich dad would receive as a gift for graduating high school. Also, I blacklist any dealer who price gouges. The biggest turn off has never been the price, it's been the AWD vs FWD difference. I have ear marked 70k total for my TR, leaving 32k for mods and an STI swap, with a bit left over for emergency maintenance. I'll be able to do stuff in the final form that I'd never be able to do in a Type R.

It's not jacked up. The dual electric steering has added even more okay that was already in the VA WRX. This is why a few companies have the steering damper thing. I'm considering trying it. You already know what the vb would put down at 25 psi. Of course at that point you'd want to put in a sti Trans and a big brake kit but that's the difference between built and not bought. For the record, I am unbiased because I like Hondas too, I'm actually building a 2000 civic coupe right now and I love that car. With what I put into both cars I could have bought the race ready type r but again, where is the fun in that. Since it's track ready there is nothing to really upgrade right, and if you do upgrade suspension and stuff on the type r then it wasn't worth buying a race ready car since those are parts that most people would change anyway. And then there is of course awd, which easily makes the wrx the best choice in the end. We all have our own opinions but I've already beat several type r's (lots of people have them here in So cali) and I'm still just rocking a jb4 and running e50 blend as far as any tuning goes. The type r is waaay overpriced for a fwd car and is more of a novelty civic with a type r badge just to make it cost more, plus it's ugly. But in it's defense, wrx guys think the vb is ugly too so there's that. I happen to love the look of the vb.

i owned a 2018 FK8.. they are special sure, but with the price dif, you could make a WRX walk it, not only on track, but as a daily too. CTRs are pretty uncomfortable once you start modding them. not to mention good luck putting the power down.

Alot of wrong information. I bet you've never even sat in a fl5. E85 support was just released with just that and a tune your getting almost 400/400. Add fbo and your 440/400 your not getting that with the Subaru. And that's stock turbo. You have guys already over 600 wheel on stock engines and clutches. So by all means please do some actual research before you spout off a bunch of incorrect information

Im surprised about you feeling like it was smaller- did you mean interior? Because when I drove one, it feels like a bit of a boat on the road. That being said, I'm coming from a decade in a BRZ. I echo your sentiments about cheap mirror, and the backup camera is also laughably piss poor.

@@da-yh3uy you're leaving out context to your statements. I still don't understand what you're trying to say. I don't believe any WRX competes with the type R, I said that in my video. People with money are still cross shopping these two cars so it was fun to compare them. The power is interesting too because a type R dynos at 270whp/310tq. Irs above the WRX but only by a little (260whp/268tq). The price is also interesting to talk about because we have so many trims but the Type R still has markups in some places. @@HeavyMetalWRX rofl what kind of dyno is measuring a fwd car to have more drivetrain loss than an awd? A stock fl5 as measured by Hondata was 327hp/ 359trq, the cobb of hondas. The fl5 still has markups in some places because it sells at those places while wrx is not selling at below msrp. That’s supply and demand. Now those are facts there is no need for a conversation 🤡🤷

The accord turbo manual is a better car to get if coming from a wrx, you can easily modify it to make type r power and they look great and not much heavier

its not about the power though.....its the suspension and the diff. You would need to add a diff, sport seats, a new suspension, and the tune to make the accord "similar" to a civic R.

add into the equation the average skilled driver trying to reach 90% of the CTR's and the TR's limits vs. an equally skilled driver letting N-mode (N Track Sense) do all the work with the DCT on a $26K Kona N, and you have the Kona N winning everytime: straight or track.
