Actually the US has been doing this since the 90's with the JDAM. You take a old korean war surplus gravity bomb, replace the tail with a guidance kit, and you have a JDAM. Once you take into account purchasing power parity, the jdam is actually quite a bit cheaper than the FAB. The us has used far more jdams than any other guided weapon that I know of, and produced some 500k of them.

For those wondering, they are unstoppable not because they are hard to track on radar or to bring down. They are quite slow and have a reasonable radar cross section. The problem is shooting a target that costs 20k with a PAC-3 MSE missile that costs 4 M.

The US has a very different military doctrine than Russia and Ukraine. In a conventional war against Russia, the US military would never have to worry about glide bombs hitting buildings or much of the other nonsense Ukraine is dealing with, primarily because they would establish air superiority.

The US is dependant on global supply chains and the stability of the countries around those supply chains for its economy. That is a major strategic interest. Not to mention that there are places where people actually want to hurt the US for imperialist reasons not because of anything the US does. The US can provide financial support to allies to do the fighting for it or it will be pulled in with its own soldiers then have to pay in blood as well. To think the US can close in on itself is naive and demonstrates a lack of understanding of the global order. Unless the goal is to give control of global supply chains to China and Russia. They're trying to tell their viewers something like: "Don't worry, it doesn't matter that Russia is making progress. Even before this conflict escalated over 2 years ago, Russia had 4 times the population of Ukraine & 5 times the GDP on a PER CAPITA basis. This means that Russia’s economy was 20 times greater, MEANING UKRAINE CANNOT WIN THIS WAR. The difference is even greater now with 1/4 to 1/3 of Ukrainians pissing off overseas with no intention of ever returning & Russia occupying the industrial Donbass. BASICALLY THE DAY THE SANCTIONS FAILED IS THE DAY UKRAINE LOST THIS WAR. The end result is that all helping the Ukrainian military does is guarantee more Ukrainian military fatalities than there otherwise would be, before Russia inevitably wins. As if half a million military fatalities isn’t enough for Ukraine. BTW the operation north of Kharkov is just a feint to force the Ukrainians to pull forces aways from the rest of the frontier. Ukrainians themselves don’t want to die for Zelensky & his Oligarchs, that’s why the’re not allowed to leave & are kidnapped off the street by thugs who have quotas to avoid being sent to the frontlines themselves. Gez NATO is paying Romania to mine it’s border with Ukraine to deter draft dodgers going that way, that’s the way this war is going, till the last Ukrainian.
