I started reading the book last night on my Kindle. Remarkable and sobering. Highly recommended.

So much accountability could be restored by a return to the status quo ante where hiding one's face in public was unacceptable beyond Halloween

There are a lot of historical assumptions in the mindset of the defenders in the four conflicts that were mentioned. They also represent poor examples because 2 are classical, one is medieval period, and the final one is a few years after that period ends. The second major flaw that I found in the author's argument was that without significant advanced knowledge, none of the destroyed civilizations had the ability to stop the aggressors. The modern examples the author points to of "weaponizing" the government (FBI/DOJ) against against Trump do not hold up to basic fact checking. Th entire interview screamed of intellectual dishonesty and laziness, which is probably why this is an opinion piece because those do not need to conform to basic journalistic and factual standards.

LOL enriching commentary from someone completely unfamiliar with VDH & US law - must be a Stanford student, perhaps the valedictorian Umm Al-Jihad

Excellent use of an ad hominem attack, those are clearly signs of a strong argument.
