New Line Cinema brought us the instant classic A Nightmare on Elm Street, but their rushed attempt to use that film as the foundation of a franchise resulted in a sequel so underwhelming that it nearly killed the franchise right there. Hoping to redeem themselves, they brought in Elm Street creator Wes Craven to write the third film, only to rework his ideas into something very different than he expected. Enter first-time director Chuck Russell and co-writer Frank Darabont, who took Craven's ideas and morphed them into the franchise favorite we have today. This is the story of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, and we're going to find out WTF Happened to This Horror Movie.

Honestly, the cockroach one in 4 I think it was is what got me. I know it's set up to be comical and looks as much but put yourself in that girls shoes from start to finish. You'd be hard pressed to find a more freaky way to go. With that being said that scene you spoke of is pretty fucking wild.

This is the movie that got the character right.. Where they didn't go to far with the comedy.. It's a problem ive seen allot of writers have with both freddy and the joker.. The characters themselves are not supposed to be funny to us.. They are just supposed to have a messed up sense of humor and make themselves laugh.. FREDDY finds it funny to use a boy a puppet on a string.. We as an audience is not SUPPOSED to laugh at that (I still do though) When freddy (and the joker) starts making actuall jokes and trying to be funny it takes away the menace

My own personal best list, is as follows: Nightmare On Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors. Nightmare On Elm Street. Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge. For me, Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, was where the whole Nightmare On Elm Street Franchise really began to bog down. I can watch it, and some of the elements of the movie are great, especially the somewhat Gothic feel of the movie, but from Mark Gray's death scene on, the movie just kinda falls flat. Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare- I don't even want to discuss this one. It was so generic and so bland, that I'm like...no. No more!!! Wes Craven's New Nightmare: Action-packed, but not my cup of tea...so to speak. Freddy Vs. Jason-This movie should have been named Jason Vs. Freddy. Why? Because Jason mops the floor with Freddy Krueger in the kill count! Freddy Krueger gets a total of...one soul. Completely pathetic! Nightmare On Elm Street 2010: I'm going to be in the minority on this one, but I liked it! The kill count is somewhat respectable, and, even though Jackie Earle Haley played the part of Freddy Krueger, he was a much darker version of the original. With his voice being lower in pitch, and sounding much more morbid and threatening, he was what the Freddy Krueger role needed for that movie....at least, in my opinion.

@@bucknaked905 I don't know how you'll feel about my saying this, but when they did A Nightmare On Elm Street 2010, and brought in Jackie Earle Haley to do the part of Freddy Krueger, he brought back the ice-cold menace that the original Freddy Krueger had long-since abandoned, due to all of the corny, and unbelievably stupid, one-liners! The makeup job is definitely different between what they did for Robert Englund's version of Freddy Krueger, and Jackie Earle Haley's version of Freddy Krueger. I actually liked Jackie Earle Haley's version far better than Robert Englund's version. Period!

The best version of Dream Warriors is the novelization of the first three films. It was darker like Craven wanted but also had some of the fantasy elements that make it so beloved. I remember in this version Taryn was a little black girl who was killed by Freddy as her grandma and Dr. Sims was cut in half when she couldn't fit through a window trying to escape. It's out of print but a great read for any hardcore NOES fan!

THIS has always been my favorite Nightmare! The effects are a bit dodgy now, but at the time of release it looked great. I had a crush on Patricia Arquette - she and Heather Lagencamp had great chemistry - everyone in the movie did an amazing job. The writing was unique for a horror movie...especially as a precursor to the super hero genre. That being said, Wes Craven's version would have been interesting and I'd love to see that avenue explored one day as well. Well done JoBlo - great wtf episode!

The first Nghtmare movie I ever saw I remember watching it with my friend Dan in 5th grade thinking it was the most badass movie ever. The Wizard Master scene is classic Freddy. I dunno I think its a great 80s horror flick for those interested in that sort of thing and the battle with Freddys corpse in the junkyard is pretty cool something you dont see in other Nightmare movies. The franchise went downhill from here (besides Freddys Dead the Final Nightmare I kind of liked that one too) so enjoy.

Even though Dream Warriors was changed from what Wes intended, ultimately I think what we saw on the screen was for the best. It brought Freddy into the mainstream and was the right balance of horror, fun, character and story. Part 3 had the energy and oomph that Freddy’s revenge completely lacked( seriously, remove the homosexual aspects, and part 2 has no actual plot; it’s just a bunch random killing scenes with mostly nameless victims). The only real problem with Dream Warriors was that it wasn’t the finale of the series as it obviously was meant to be by both Wes and the narrative itself.

@ Michael Head How do you figure? Wes' original script for Dream Warriors is *vastly* superior to Russel's reworking of the story. It's actually a straight up horror story, unlike the fantasy/horror that ended up on the screen. Dream Warriors is directly responsible for the downfall of the series: - Freddy's "funny" puns - Humor - Jarring 80's hair metal - Celebrity cameos In short, the movie jumped the shark. Also, except from Philip's and Jennifer's death scenes, where are the rest of the "spectacular" death sequences? Do those two scenes seriously overshadow the fact that the rest of the death scenes are extremely sub-par? Nancy's death is okay-ish, but it was much better in Wes' script. Also, it's perfectly clear that Russel didn't 'get' Nancy's character at all..

Freddy was definitely at his most scary and outright mean in part 2. I also think that movie featured his best makeup. Too bad there just simply wasn’t enough of him in that movie compared to part one and all the others.

I had no idea about Patricia having a rocky start in this film. I can totally see it though. She was very young at the time and with an inexperienced director, it's no wonder she got caught off guard. She's beautiful though. I can understand why all the cast members had a crush on her.

Yeah I heard and read they had to give her cue cards in her first scene. They did the first scene about 50 times and they started very late. I think Ken Sagoes (Roland Kincaid) cussed out the Director and some other folks because he caught 2 buses in the rain to do this movie and he was hired. Patricia said the cinematographer was mean as hell to her. I thought the reason she didn’t come back in part 4 was because of the bad experience she had on the set in part 3. They started part 4 on April 27, 1988 (Lisa Wilcox birthday /Alice Johnson). Technically, that would be the month Patricia got pregnant with her first child, Enzo but she said in an interview back in 2017 that she was asked to come back but she didn’t because she wanted meatier roles. On the VHS release, the music video for Dokken's "Dream Warriors" appeared after the credits. The video contains many scenes from the movie and ends when the band vanquishes Freddy, causing him to wake up from his "nightmare," and ask, "Who were those guys?" The Freddy glove that was stolen from the set of this film was found in another movie: it was hanging on the wall of the work shed in Evil Dead II (1987), released the same year. It was part of a continued banter between directors Wes Craven and Sam Raimi. See The Hills Have Eyes (1977), The Evil Dead (1981), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), and Evil Dead II (1987) for more. According to Wes Craven, he decided early on that there had to be a group of people fighting Freddy, because the souls of his previous victims had made him too strong for one person alone. The idea for the mental hospital treating the Dream Warriors was not just some riff on One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), but instead inspired by real-life establishments: "At that time, there was kind of a movement of such places that even advertised on television, 'Send us your troubled child, and we'll make them okay,' and, essentially, they were like prisons, or insane asylums." (At around 29 mins) When the clay puppet's face turns into Freddy's, special effects man Doug Beswick used stop-motion animation. Filming began with a clay Freddy face that was made plainer in each frame. The result was then run backward, and that is what appears in the final cut of the film. Jennifer Rubin was told by some of her fans that her character of Taryn had caused them to quit drugs, and the actress is very proud of the fact. Wes Craven's original premise of the film involved Freddy invading the real world and haunting the actors and crew responsible for the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" films. This idea was inspired by Return to Horror High (1987), which was another meta-horror movie at the time. However, it was rejected by the studio for being too ambitious, though Craven was later able to use it for New Nightmare (1994). For the dream sequence, in which a Dick Cavett interview is interrupted by Freddy Krueger, Sally Kellerman was originally in the script as the guest, but Cavett was then allowed to pick the person he'd be interviewing. He picked Zsa Zsa Gabor, because he thought she was the dumbest person he'd ever met in his life, and he'd never have her on his show in real life. So, if there was one person he'd want to see killed by Freddy, it would be her. Robert Englund admits that he knew Patricia Arquette would go on to be a big star one day. He also explains how all of the guys on the set were head over heels in love with her. Between takes, some of them would even go to Englund to get his advice on whether or not he thought they had a chance with her and should ask her out. Film debut of Patricia Arquette and Jennifer Rubin Once after a tiring day on set, Robert Englund fell asleep in his dressing room still in full Freddy make-up. When he awoke and looked in the mirror he got a terrible scare. First writing credit for Oscar-nominated writer and director Frank Darabont. Kristen comes across a classic nightmarish image of a roasted pig on a table, and then it comes to life and growls at her. They actually roasted a pig, let it spoil, and prop guys puppeted it from beneath. The poor guy who was actually behind the camera, cinematographer Roy H. Wagner, claims the pig's stench was so overwhelming, he can still smell it to this day. The fire department was always on set during filming of the boiler room scene. The smoke from the machines nauseated many of the actors and actresses. Special effects creator Mark Shostrom created a desiccated "little girl corpse," which Kristen would discover she was holding, but it was decided that the item was too grotesque. A miniature skeleton was used instead. (At around 10 mins) When Taryn is first seen in the hallway, she's wearing a Dokken shirt. Dokken wrote and performed "Dream Warriors" for this film. In the final shooting script, one of the Warriors dreams up a giant Transformers-style robot to fight Freddy. The sequence even made it into the storyboards stage, but budgetary constraints made filming it impossible. The only film out of the first six to not begin with a nightmare scene. Wes Craven worked with two different Arquette siblings. Patricia Arquette was in this movie, and her brother, David Arquette, would become famous playing Dewey in the Scream series, the first four of which were directed by Craven. Craven also worked with their father, Lewis Arquette, who played a sheriff in Scream 2 (1997). In real life, Ira Heiden (Will) was a Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master during high school, which made him feel secure in the role which he thinks is the reason why he got the part of Will. This is the first movie in which the main antagonist is solely referred to as "Freddy" Krueger. In the first two films, he was still called "Fred" Krueger a few times. Director Chuck Russell stated in an interview that the mirror sequence was very difficult to do. He stated that it was before CGI, so that they "had to get really inventive." They were literally manipulating Mylar in front of the camera to get the shot done. (at around 15 mins) When Nancy meets the teenage patients, Phillip says, "Welcome to the snake pit." "Snake pit" is a slang term for a mental health facility, and was a common slang term throughout most of the 20th century. Ira Heiden (Will) and Jennifer Rubin (Taryn) would go to lunch with their costumes on, and people would stare at Jennifer like she was an alien. Winona Ryder auditioned for the role of Kristen, but director Chuck Russell felt that Ryder was too young for the role. Ryder would later become engaged to Johnny Depp who starred in the first film of the series. The bar where Nancy and Dr. Gordon meet Nancy's Father is called "Little Nemo's." "Little Nemo in Slumberland" is the name of a comic strip by Winsor McCay about the adventures of a child in the land of dreams. (At around 10 mins) The shirt Taryn is wearing in the beginning has the cover art of Dokken's 1984 album, "Tooth And Nail." "Tooth And Nail" contains "Into The Fire," a track that can be heard on the radio in some versions of the film. The film marks the first time to show Freddy using his victims's weaknesses against them. Jennifer Rubin played the lead role in Bad Dreams (1988), a film seen as a derivative of the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" film franchise. Jennifer states that Joey used to be a debater in school, but at the beginning of this movie, Joey is mute. He later regains his speech, implying that Freddy was responsible for traumatizing him into a mute state. Joseph Ruben was the studio's first choice to direct the film, having already directed the similarly-themed Dreamscape (1984), but was forced to decline due to having already signed on to direct The Stepfather (1987). He instead recommended his Dreamscape co-writer, Chuck Russell, for the job. This movie takes place 6 years after A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), and one year after A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985). Heather Langenkamp and Patricia Arquette also are in The Outsiders. Langenkamp was in the 1983 film and Arquette was in the 1990 tv series. During the first session meeting with Nancy (Langenkamp), Taryn (Rubin) says, "Everybody has bad dreams!" A similar line was spoken by Nancy (Langenkamp) when she was consoling Tina (Amanda Wyss) in the first A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Originally, Taryn's character's head was to explode after being injected with Freddy's syringes, but it looked too fake. The scene in which Neil Gordon (Craig Wasson) is thrown into the grave and partially buried by the skeleton of Freddy is a tribute to Body Double (1984), in which Wasson's character is similarly buried alive. The first movie in the series not to set any real-world scenes in the house on Elm Street 1428, Nancy's residence from A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and Jesse's from A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985). Kristen and the other protagonists only visit the house a few times in their dreams, and it makes only a few occasional appearances in the rest of the series.

This was the movie I used to stop being scared of scary movies. I rented it on a Friday night with my uncle, I watched it that night (everybody thought it was great and a good pick) but I was terrified and couldn't sleep that night. Saturday morning, after the sun was up, I rewound the tape and watched it again ... over and over until sunset that same day. By the time I had to turn over the TV to my dad, I was no longer afraid of most scary movies; even on those fringe cases I could sleep after a bit of meditation and psyching up. I wouldn't be so scared I couldn't sleep again until I was 14. My mother and I saw Wes Craven's New Nightmare on base while my stepdad was deployed. Wes flipped the script and made me terrified all over again.

I loved the first Elm Street movie but the third one was where the series really nailed the dream aspect. What makes the series stand out from all the other horror movies being made at the time was the highly imaginative fantasy dream sequences and Dream Warriors took this to the next level.

Freddy in dream warriors was still pretty scary if you look past the occasional one liners and his taunting. If anything this is my personal favorite version of Freddy he doesn’t need to be an angry stalker to be scary, that’s what truly set him apart from the others. after this tho I agree they took freddys comedic side too far even if dream master is still enjoyable to me

I think they should've done a prequel to the first film that focused on the epidemic of missing/murdered kids on Elm Street, the capture and trial/mistrial of Freddy, the revenge the devastated parents seek, and how the trauma of it all affects how they raise their remaining kids. Robert Englund could the public face of "Fred Krueger" as sweet and innocent, like he did with Willie in V, and play Freddy as evil as he did in the first film. With the right writer and director, he'd give an academy award winning performance. I also think that John Saxon and Ronee Blakely would've given great performances as Nancy's parents, and the effects that their actions took on their marriage.

At times, I feel like that the best two movies in this Franchise are Nightmare on Elm Street, and Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors. I've gotta give Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors a little bit more than a slight edge, though. My personal list of the top 5 Movies in this Series is as follows: 1:A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors (1987). 2:A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). 3:A Nightmare on Elm Street 4:The Dream Master (1988). 4:A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985). 5:A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010). Hmm... Jackie Earle Haley actually did a cutup of a job in this movie. I think that he was actually much more menacing than the latter phases of the original Freddy Krueger! The rest of my list is as follows: 6:A Nightmare on Elm Street 5:The Dream Child (1989). (Kinda lame, but still 3 kills for dear old Dad...umm... Freddy)! 7:Freddy Vs. Jason (2003). (This one should have been named Jason Vs. Freddy. In the kills category, Jason absolutely mops the proverbial floor with Freddy! All the hype on this movie, and Freddy gets-Are you kidding me?!?!?!?-1 Victim...ONE!!! 8:Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994).
