WTF Happened to Jackie Chan?

Every kid of a certain age grew up wanting to be Jackie Chan. A legend in Hong Kong and most of the world from the late-seventies on, Jackie Chan also, at long last, became a superstar in North America after the release of his 1996 classic Rumble in the Bronx. Supercop, First Strike and more dubbed versions of his Hong Kong movies would follow, but it was 1998’s Rush Hour, which paired him with Chris Tucker, that made him a phenomenon in the United States. It was as if, at long last, the United States was let in on a secret the rest of the world already knew.
Jackie Chan emerged in the late nineties after a failed attempt to make him into a Bruce Lee clone. Never wanting to be a typical martial arts star, Chan opted to mix comedy and martial arts in a way that made him a household name throughout much of the world in the eighties. His movies like Police Story, Wheels on Meals (you read that right), Dragons Forever, Armour of God (which almost killed him), and more were giant hits worldwide. The U.S did indeed try to use him in a few films, with him having minor roles opposite Burt Reynolds in The Cannonball Run and its sequel, and he got solo action films (in English) with The Big Brawl and The Protector. Neither film’s director knew how to use him, especially in The Protector, which tried to make him into a Clint Eastwood-style tough guy, a formula that didn’t mesh with Chan at all, leading to him temporarily swearing off U.S movies. Finally, in the nineties, he could do it his way, and in this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, written (with Mathew Plale), narrated, and edited by Taylor James Johnson, we trace his career and where he’s at now.

Jet Li was more like someone trying to take on the mantle of Bruce Lee, whereas Chan was a martial artist who brought a more comedic tone. Its kinda like the difference between Samuel L Jack who mostly takes on action or dramatic roles, while Eddy Murphy who is famous for his comedic roles.

The growth of Jackie Cham was amazing , seeing him learn English over the years and then finally become a master of the craft in The Foreigner made me soo proud. That movie will be one of my favourites from him because it came out the same year as Logan. Both him and Hugh Jackman being old and emotional created such a genuine and realistic character, truly versatile.

Jackie Chan's 2017's The Foreigner is one of my favorite movies by him. I like Jackie but I'm not always as invested or even interested in all his characters. His character in that movie just hits hard. amazing acting and action. love that movie.

The fight from The Forbidden Kingdom was such a huge letdown. Jackie and Jet were still fully capable of putting on amazing fight performances, but they decided to waste it on that anti-gravity garbage full of wire-work and other stupid cliche shit for the genre. I always loved Jackie's fight scenes because while there was SOME wire-work here and there, it was still done in a way where I could suspend disbelief. Maybe it was used to make somebody fly farther back after a kick or something like that, but it was so minimal. We never got to see a fight between Jackie and Jet that was in any way realistic. Such a wasted opportunity.

when i watched this man kicking butt back in the days, i couldnt even comprehend, how difficult and how hard it must have been to do all the stunts, it was just later, when i was a little older, that i started to kinda "analyse" the fight scenes and really realized how crazy all of this is... i mean, for real! choose anyone of his earlier movies and watch any fight or escape scene, it is just borderline mad!

Damn entertaining video! 2 interesting facts that aren't mentioned here -- 1 - He actually sold more tickets than any other performer throughout the 1990's decade, on a worldwide scale. Mind you, this was not only movies but other things, such as concerts (more about that in #2) 2 - He learned Kung-Fu from Peking Opera training, rather than a from a Kung-Fu school. Because of this, he was also taught acting, stunt-work, dancing and singing. The main thing was that Peking Opera just fell out of favor with the public, so Jackie, and the rest of those that learned it (such as Yuen Wo Ping, Cory Yuen, Sammo Hung & the insanely underappreciated Yuen Biao), were absurdly skilled but had no outlet for it. This is why Hong Kong cinema from the late 70s to mid 90s was so awesome. Oh, and not only was he electrocuted during the Police Story pole-slide, but the lights, being on all day, had heated the pole to a temperature that ended up frying off the outer layers of skin on his hand, the exploding bulbs cut his hands up like crazy, and the final landing damaged two vertebrae, as well as broke a few of his bottom ribs. Oh, and then he had to, in that same shot, run over to the badguy who was running from him.. [ And even more amazing... that wasn't in the script -- he literally saw the pole and thought it'd be an awesome post-fight climactic moment for the movie ]

To me, the 90s will always be the decade of Jackie Chan. I discovered his movies at a local flea market for sale at a bootleg VHS shop and instantly fell in love. I was young and didn’t have a lot of money but I managed to trade in my KISS dolls to the owner for a bootleg copy of every single Jackie Chan movie up until that time! And I remember how excited my friend and I were when Rumble in the Bronx was announced in theaters in the US.

I grew up on Jackie Chan movies. I knew him long before he went to USA. Right back to his earliest films I loved his full on action and also the blooper reels at the end of his movies. In my eyes, he is the greatest action movie star that has ever lived, because he did his own action, unlike most other actors. The fact that the guy is still alive is incredible with the amount of dangerous stunts he did and often went wrong. I might not agree with everything he says and does these days, but he is the greatest stuntman/actor there ever has been and there will never be anyone close to beating him.

I had read at one time that he was uncomfortable with English and filmed some movies in Chinese and dubbed the English later. I particularly enjoyed the serious movie The Foreigner. I respect and love him as an actor, and stuntman for his incredible work ethic - so much so that he's basically close to being neigh-uninsurable due to the fact 96% of his stunts during his prime had a very high chance of being fatal. As a person on the other hand, it's a little debatable - especially when it comes to his choice of politics.

From what I've heard, his son committed a crime (by crime I mean a "slap on the wrist" kind) and he'll be in serious trouble if Jackie doesn't go along with the CCP (basically holding his son hostage). They won't make stars disappear but they can make family members disappear.

Jackie was a stunt double himself back in the early 70s & didn't get credit either. But by creating a stunt team, they all get to be nominated & awarded w/ him by the Hong Kong Film Awards' Best Action Choreography category. Sammo Hung did the same thing. Even Hollywood stuntmen don't get such recognition from the Oscars.

If i recall, his stunt team is literally paid by him with his own pocket since no insurance company would accept them. But from that level of trust and experience, it led to how fluid their fight choreography is. This something not many movies can produce in a consistent bases. Also didn't Jackie Chan only have stunt doubles for times where he is just walking scenes?

i recommend "the shinjuku incident" it's from around 2009, jackie plays a chinese refugee who ends up in japan where he gets swept into gang life. and has to make deals with rival gangs in order to gather what he needs to return home. Along the way a gigantic gang war is triggered resulting in jackie's character tietou getting more wrapped up in criminal activity. jackie does get vicious in this, but he's playing a depressed and eventually angered gang leader, there's none of the action comedy, but there is that gritty sleeping dogs vibe.

I’d argue Bruce Willis was the first “little guy in the action era” to break into the mainstream, but Jackie made his own mark in so many different ways. Would Tom cruise be doing the crazy shit to try and kill himself on film if not for Jackie? No, I don’t believe he’d have taken his career to these places without inspiration from Chan.. watching that bus scene again it reminded me of when cruise does almost the same thing, but with a plane ✈ lol.
