WTF Happened To Trick 'R Treat?

It seems like every year, either at Halloween or sometimes at the end of summer, a new seasonally themed anthology, or six, gets released upon the horror-viewing community. Of course, everyone has a different opinion on what the best ones are, but a title that keeps coming back when talking about the best anthologies or the best Halloween season films is Trick ‘r Treat, released in 2007. Well, initially 2007 but wider in 2009.

This movie is singular. It manages to successfully execute so many aspects of horror: slasher elements, supernatural lore, variety in monsters, tragedy and black comedy, all gift wrapped in gorgeous cinematography; from music to colors. I wish this wasn’t buried in the storm of remakes and torture porns. Sam is an earned icon status in both being cute and terrifying. Someone you want to see, but never coming after you.

It's a shame this movie didn't get released because of Superman Returns disappointing box office. But, this movie was sold out at every video store and rental place except for Walmart in 2009.

One of, if not the best, direct to video horror movies ever. I cant help but watch this every October since 2009. I remember seeing the trailer like a year and a half before it finally came out.. The studio definitely dropped the ball on this one.

I was lucky enough to see this in a theater in 2009 before it’s direct to video release. The director was there and spoke afterwards. It was AMAZING. Probably one of the best theater experiences I’ve ever had. It just hit on every level for me. It’s been a yearly tradition ever since.

It may have been a long time coming, but I do feel like this film has finally gotten its due in the public eye. Trick r Treat merchandise is now a staple in Halloween stores, and the movie itself is pretty popular on streaming (it’s been in the top 10 on Max this month!). I’m glad to see it too. It deserves it.

I just discovered this one last Oct. and I absolutely love it! Great stories, effects are pretty legit for the time, love the music, the look and atmosphere as well. Then you have Sam, what more can you ask for 🎃👍

This is my favorite horror movie of all time. The house I live in now is also the house I lived in from 2001 to 2018. There is a strip mall about a five minute walk away from this place. I walk down there all time to shop for groceries, but I also used to walk down there to shop at the now-defunct K-Mart for a variety of reasons. Some of it was stuff my parents didn't want in the house (like the seventh Harry Potter book; the joys of growing up in a hardcore Christian family) but every year I'd start frequenting the place in late August hoping that the Halloween decorations would be out. One year when I walked in there for this purpose, I noticed that they'd moved their yearly $5 horror DVD display to the front with the décor. As I was browsing I spotted this movie. I loved the look of cover and the sound of the story in the blurb on the back, so I bought it before leaving. I got home, popped it in, and absolutely fell in love with it. The only piece of American media that oozes Halloween more than this film to me is It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. I love everything about it, and I have so much merch from the movie, specifically stuff with Sam's face on it and two different versions of the graphic novel. I watch it every year with my younger brother. We did this year's viewing last Sunday evening, and it was a special one as my brother has been laid up in the hospital for over two months now with Guillan-Barre. I'll continue to watch it at least once every year until I am physically unable to do so.

My favorite film of all time. Excited for the new comic book story coming out called "Haunted." The other Anthology "Days of the Dead" is also another masterpiece from the Omnibus 10th Anniversary comic book with an adaptation of the movie's stories in there as well. Really recommend looking into those if you haven't. 🎃

First time I saw it was in 2010 at the Long Beach Comic Con. Had no idea what it was about but man I am so glad that I stayed to watch it. This is one of my top 3 Halloween films

While I am a fan of John Carpenter I'm one of the few people on Earth that doesn't care for Halloween, the franchise, or Michael Myers. This movie on the other hand is in my opinion THE Halloween movie. It bleeds Halloween and the holiday itself is front and center. Whenever I think of a movie associated with the holiday it will always be this one. It was criminal that it didn't get a theatrical release back in 2007. Such an underrated gem.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one that doesn't worship Michael Myers and the Halloween franchise. I enjoyed the first two films well enough, and obviously Carpenter is a legend, but Michael and the franchise itself are vastly overrated, in my opinion. Sure, I still watch the first Halloween film every October, but it's more of a pre-programmed ritual at this point, as opposed to the yearly viewing of Trick 'r Treat, which is a highly anticipated delight. I'm very fortunate that I finally got a chance to see it in the theater last year. I think it was Fathom entertainment that had the limited run anniversary theatrical release, but I haven't seen any news about them doing it again this year.

I watch Trick R Treat every Halloween. Seriously, one of my favorite anthology films of all time. It just puts me in the Halloween mood so fast. Sam is the cutest. I had no idea how this movie was almost shelved. I remember not being able to find it in theaters forever, so I ended up getting it on dvd or watching it when it was on streaming.

I had never even heard of this movie until I joined Halloween Facebook groups due to wanting to build a home haunt. It kept coming up over and over again in conversation so I bought it out of curiosity on Vudu. We watched it and fell in love with it. It gets played a few times from the end of September until Halloween. Spirit Halloween routinely carries merchandise and I grabbed a light up Sam sitting on a Jack o lantern in their store, as well as two flaming Jack o lanterns that we use in our display that are designed like the weird one at the end of the movie in the werewolf scene.

This movie is essentially what Johm Carpenter wanted the Halloween movies to be, as shown by why Halloween III is very different. Ofcourse, the poor reception turned Halloween into the Michael Myers series.

I remember when imdb used to have message boards with links to any updates and photos, Trick R Treat and Southland Tales felt like fever dreams that took forever to be released, but I would rush home daily in middle school to check the development... felt surreal when I finally was able to rent from Hollywood Video.

I really liked this movie, I try to watch it around Halloween every year. I liked the intertwined stories and the nods to other horror movie that you have to watch for. The character of Rhonda was my favorite. I do wish she would have left Shrader to die. He was part of the prank but genuinely felt bad.

Does anyone remember a Halloween cartoon that aired maybe at least 25 years ago or more, it involved a kids friend dying (possibly hung from a tree??)? All I remember is that I only saw it once one night on regular TV at my grandparents house and that I loved it but never saw it again. i THINK it might've had something to do with saving the friends soul or his ghost? A big tree on a hill was definitely a key part of it for sure.

Bryan Singe's production company produced Trick r Treat, and he pissed off the wrong people jumping ship from X-Men 3 to Superman so as retaliation this movie was pulled. I mean, the trailer looked great, it had a release date, it had huge buzz and was in fact a terrific film. It was pulled out of malice, not business.

Ima sucker for a good movie trailer, and the trailer for this movie was such a ride from beginning to end i used to rewind whatever dvd it was on to watch the trailer twice. It pulls you in with so much intrigue and i saw that trailer probly 100 times before i saw the movie years later and it still didnt disappoint.

Why can't so many KZbinrs say Dougherty xorrectly. His name is not Michael Dockrity. Mr H does this too. It's DOUGH-ER-TEE. He's said it in interviews. The last name pronounced as Dockrity, is Docherty. What about Dougherty convinces people it's pronounced Dockrity? You'd think you'd look up a simple pronunciation before making entire videos saying the man's name.
