I think part of the reason the song is so powerful is Eddie doesn't just repeat the news story but recognizes that he and all of us were & continue to be part of the problem. In the song society failed Jeremy just as we all fail other troubled kids in our own communities.

When this was new, I had my 60-year-old mother watch it. I didn't remember any particular reaction, but it must have been two months later that there was some kind of school shooting, and she grimly said, "I guess Jeremy spoke in class today." Clearly, it made an impact.

I always thought he killed the other kids, and didn't think if he was in jail or shot by police. I never thought of this way. Suicide in front of class. Thank you for your page India, twent years later I finally know what really happened. So many school shootings happened after this it all blurs into one bloody classroom to me. Great job! Also loved Chers Half Breed, and Cranberries Zombie. That Ireland thing is fighting over Anglican Church vs Catholic Church. First terrorists were the Irish Republican Army because they had no choice but to fight gorilla war style in cities. I think the gold is also about the hypocrisy of the churches and how the people are the treasures not the church. Peace Love and Light!

Continuing.... Ireland they mentioned 1916 in the song, thats when 400 years of war escalated. U2 the band with Bono. The wrote Bloody Sunday see this link. The people became Zombies from endless oppression and fighting in streets. Terrorists fighting off Imperialism, just like the USA founding fathers did. But we took a whole continent from the natives. Europeans have been fighting way too long and taking others shit. Small examples and big ones. Full circle with concept of fighting for freedom and freedom of religion. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Sunday_(1972)

If you listen to the lyrics, its a remembering of Jeremy through another that remembered picking on him when they were younger. The line 'Then he hit me with a surprised Left, My Jaw left hanging just like the day, Like the day heard", his jaw was left hanging open when he heard about what Jeremy did, he recalled when Jeremy hit me back, and his jaw was hanging wide open in shock. That same shock left his jaw hanging open when Jeremy killed himself. The lyrics are amazing, and surprising that not many caught on to the story of the song.

the part where he pulls out the gun is edited out now
@joshstorms39535 жыл бұрын
Lee Bassa: I think the reason why other reactors thought he shot at the class was because of how the video was edited. The only visual hint we get about him shooting himself were those super quick cuts of Eddie pointing his finger at his head. In the originally cut of the video, Jeremy takes out a revolver, pulls the trigger and it cuts to his blood spattering all over the place. As you can imagine MTV thought it was to graphic/hard for viewers to handle and it had to be edited. Also this song speaks to me as well. As someone who was bullied to the brink of considering suicide and got into fist fights, it sums up almost all the feelings of sadness and anger I felt perfectly. With that said, you made the right decision in pulling your son from school. My parents had to go through all the feelings and hard decisions your going through and I have nothing but respect and love for your courage. After my Freshman year, my parents and I decided that I should not have to put up with it anymore and after some research, enrolled me in a different school/district. It was the best decision of my life. I had good teachers and classmates who accepted me for who I was. It was everything I dreamed of. I dont know if your state has open enrollment but I would look into it. Im sure there is another school district by you that is full of students who would accept your son for the wonderful human being he is. Best of luck/all the love and support to you, your family and your son.

"Try to forget this! Try to erase this From the blackboard...." This song may get overplayed even to this day, but I still feel that from a musical, lyrical, and production standpoint, this song was PJ's masterpiece. I mean, the sheer psychological profile the lyrics paint of this boy's torment is heart wrenching; the pictures he's drawing in the beginning of the song which are a cry for help, the way his parents treat him ("Daddy never gave affection, no...and the boy was something that mommy wouldn't wear") to the trauma he faces on a daily basis in school...truly, one of the most perfect songs ever written.

I was the weird kid that went through 5 years of bullying, I was House Mouse. It doesn't go away and some of those scars still hurt. My parents knew but didn't know how to help in those days. I finally asked my mom how she got her tough rep. She told me that after all the bullying I might have to just fight and pick the toughest b*tch in school who loved tormenting me. I stood up and told the older girl to f*ck off (not a common word at the time). She turned away and never bugged me again. I wish it hadn't come to that but it worked. Love your reaction, thank you so much for realizing what the ending was. Truly, thanks

Completely understand but the song isn't just about bullying at school. It's a reference to the lack of response from parentage. A fact that is prevalent in everyone lives but underlooked because of the parent's laxidasical attempts at raising a child. Basically, if you are a money grabber in the parent's eyes you are cool. If you ain't properly loved then you are properly fucked by society.

This song was ahead of it's time in many respects. I remember when it came out. It was a time in America when bullying was considered no big deal. Many adults and teachers considered it a right of passage. I can remember many teachers who would bully kids just as much as other kids. This was the first time I remember seeing bullying brought to light. Back then, Pearl Jam took so much heat for the song and video they stopped doing videos. Today all the critics seem like fools because the issue has only gotten worse. Which is what happens in most cases when issues are ignored or swept under the rug. It's sad that 30 years later we have not made the progress we should have in this area.

I’m really glad you looked the stuff after the song was over so you know exactly what it’s about. Sometimes people will react to this song, but they do the live Unplugged version, it sort of irks me when people do that for this song because when you do that, you’re mostly reacting to how the song is being performed rather than on what the song itself really is, and so the meaning of the song gets kinda lost. I’ve seen people react to it and basically be like “yeah that was a good song, he sounded good singing it, okay have a nice day”, and you can tell they didn’t pick up on any of the song’s content. I think the ideal way to react to this song is why watching the music video, then you get the fullest extent of it’s effect. And the reason I’m glad you looked it up after is because that’s like something you’re doing just for good measure. There’s stuff you wouldn’t realize without having looked up that information. Like how it was detailed and the thing he said to the class before actually killing himself. Knowing that makes the song even more powerful. I’m also glad you were able to realize that he killed himself at the end, because I think sometimes people mistakingly think that he killed his classmates. There’s an edited part in this video. And the end when he pulls out the gun, the video shows him actually put the barrel into his mouth. But that had to be edited, so the moment he does that, the camera kinda zooms in on his face so that only everything above his mouth is in the picture, and the sight of the gun in his mouth is cut out. There’s an uncut version of the music video online where it actually shows him doing that. And people that part was edited out, I think that’s why some people thought it was him killing the students, not realizing that it was him killing himself and that the blood on the students was his blood, not theirs.

He couldn’t take no f*cking more.” You have no idea how many reactions ive seen to this song who 1 cant grasp this videos true story, despite literally showing it, 2 having an immediate reaction with such empathy for jeremy as you did.. and 3 didnt immediately try to sympathize and victim blame Jeremy for “traumatizing” his freakin bullies. Thank you for restoring some humanity for me.

I know this is mad late. But when Eddie sang "Try to forget this, try to erase this from the blackboard" was actually reference to the memory they'll have of him shooting himself and the blood splatter on the blackboard after he shot himself.

Another great WTF song based on a true story: Nirvana's "Polly".

SlightlyUnderAverage frances farmer will have her revenge is also on of the most underrated nirvana songs. It’s one of my fav tunes of theirs to this day. It goes hard. That guitar riff ❤️

"Jeremy spoke in class today" a metaphor for the action/statement that Jeremy made in class by blowing his brains out hence the lyrics "try to erase THIS from the blackboard"

The really crazy thing is, a few years ago, the band actually got to interview some of the witnesses that were in the classroom that day. They said that if they had known the song would have gotten the response it did after it's release, they would have never released it because it upset the witnesses to keep hearing it over and over again. Rightfully so, it would have messed me up too. Then again they also said that the song made them look bad and they tried to say that they got along with the guy. Obviously that was a lie. On the flip side to that, the song was released during a time where depression, suicide and mental health in general was considered taboo, and NO ONE talked about it. I feel like the song shed a little light on the reality of these illnesses and situations. I was told by everyone growing up in that time that it was all in my head and that it wasn't real. That what I was feeling at the time was only temporary and that it would go away. I was told not to talk about it because it would make me and my family look bad. This came from a professional... I still feel depressed and I have anxiety sometimes, but now that I'm older I feel like I have the right mindset to handle these things. I'm glad that people are taking it more seriously now. If you need to talk to someone please don't hesitate. They are a lot more understanding now.

A very emotional song, great reaction & the shock you showed at the end of the video. Here we are still pushing children to the point of harming themselves or themselves & others.

This entire album means the world to me. My sons were bullied to the point I ended up homeschooling. It's a shame how many kids today are depressed and suicidal. It's one reason I do so much community work now. Thank you for sharing. Subscribing!

This song is 28 years old and its as relevant today, if not more with internet bullying. Unfortunately we are still seeing this outcome from bullying where a similar tragedy in the UK last week.

It’s crazy how the little boy went into the class without his shirt on...that’s how Jeremy Delle did it. 😞

it also touches on the role of the parent in a kids life thats getting bullied ... parenting can help a kid navigate a child through those times ... learn to cope, how to react, etc ..
