This race really highlighted all of the flaws in F1. Tsunoda made an aggressive, but not ridiculous move on Stroll and was penalised when Stroll didn’t see him coming, meanwhile Verstappen escorted Hamilton half way to French Guyana and apparently that’s fine. The DRS was also way too powerful yet again, they need to significantly reduce its effect and range if the cars can follow more closely next year. Drivers are losing their racecraft abilities because they rely too much on DRS to make overtakes. Good passes like the one made by Gasly on Ocon should be celebrated, not called out for being aggressive.

I have noticed that Katie's contributions to the podcast feel sometimes redundant. That's not her fault, I love Katie and her opinions, it's just that she usually is third in the order to answer and cannot bring something completely new to the table when it's her turn. She sometimes starts her part with something like "as you have already mentioned...". In that case, I would suggest try to keep it short if there knowingly won't come something new. Maybe try to change the order, that she answers first more often. Today, as soon as Matt dropped out, she was much more relevant and I loved listening to her because her opinions weren't already preempted by the others. I think she is actually very well prepared and it's a pity that she cannot show this so well if she always answers last.

The thing that gets really weird, is that Verstappens onboard is working for the entire rest of that lap. The video of the incident shows his onboard, and then for that ONE corner it switches to the rear facing camera and then back on once he rejoins the track. I hate conspiracy theories, but this is just such a bizarre coincidence

@@cbj4sc1 that's not what I was saying, it's more the fact that you literally can't find onboard footage anywhere. Tv direction is one thing, but the onboard cameras don't switch off. The camera's on a F1 car do not record locally. They choose 1 stream coming from the car. So, if they record the live front stream, they cannot record the stream on the back. it's not transmitted. When the incident happened, the recording was coming from the back of Max his car because seconds before that, Lewis was behind Max. If they want to record all the streams, they have to send them online and add extra hardware in the car. They will not do that because of the extra weight of transmitting hardware and the extra hardware to process and record the streams locally. You can not send multiple streams on 1 channel. You can design new hardware for that, like combine 4 1080p steams into a 1 2160p steam. But then you have to split them and need more hardware in the car itself. You will add about 200 to 300 grams to the car, with added antenna's even 300-500 grams. It looks like it not a lot, but with the cars are getting heavier and heavier already, it might be too much to gain a little.

I'd like to see a Sprint with just the Q3 participants. Picture it... Out in Q1 starts the GP in P16-P20. Out in Q2 starts the GP in P11-P15. Times in Q2 determine starting grid for Sprint, which essentially replaces Q3. Finishing order of Sprint is P1-P10 starting order of GP, with P11-P20 already determined. A DQ in Qualifying starts GP in P20, no Sprint. If that removes a car from the 10 in the Sprint, it would then run 9 cars, setting the starting 9 for GP, with the Q2 & Q1 eliminations becoming P10-P19, and the DQ starting the GP in P20.

I think the major strength of sprint is that the cars in sprint are very light and easily manoeuvrable during the starting point in the race where the gap is very less offering very high overtaking opportunity. This makes overtakes exciting, dynamic and more fun to watch. Also watching the drivers drive the lighter easily handlable cars in close quarters, wheel to wheel makes it a visual spectacle. Later after may be 10 laps, gap will increase and it might become boring, due to the dirty air. If the dirty air issue is reduced in 2022, then sprint will be the best opportunity to make the races with low overtaking opportunity more interesting... And exciting. ____________ However I feel the length duration of the sprint should be changed in such a way that it exactly falls in the window of ambiguity to choose the tyres, like softs barely lasting the full duration (may be the deg skyrockets in last 5 laps if not managed properly) and mediums giving a safer but slower option. And I also feel that purpose of the sprint should be different from the main race from the audience perspective. Sprint should all be about overtaking and racecraft - purely driver skills and initial tyre choice of the team with no pitstops. This makes sprint distinct from the sunday main race having a different flavour. I personally don't want reverse grid even though it's exciting after seeing Lewis. It's very unnatural. I feel better way to approach it is modifying the duration of the sprint to make the tyre choice more ambiguous. And ultimately either take safer option or faster but riskier option leaving everything on driver's skill to push harder but preserving the tyres simultaneously. This type of Sprint format is more natural, and driver centric, offering different flavour of racing compared to conventional Sunday main race which involves driver, team, strategy etc. And i think sprint can make boring tracks objectively better as at least a short race session is replacing a practice session. I don't think sprint will bomb to become even more boring than practice session. F1 has hit a Goldmine with sprint format. If they had had replaced sprint with something more important than a practice session then there is clearly a red flag for sprint. We are too much spoiled by 2021 season that we feel sprint session is boring. But it is objectively better than practice session especially with 2022 regs. Just being hopefully optimistic. Ofc being said all these.. **** Ofc sprint shouldn't enter every GP, a sit would be a big NO NO... But sprint has to be used in those places where either having a sprint session will enhance the experience (which supports overtaking with lighter cars) or in the locations where overtaking opportunites are really poor. Sprint as of now is not perfect and I feel best and organic way to make sprint interesting is to have the duration be in the window of the tyre choice ambiguity, depending on the compounds and track condition. Ofc additionally an overtaking championship can also be started separately which will add some value to the sprint on its own. I FEEL SPRINT SHOULD BE ALL ABOUT OVERTAKING, TYRE PRESERVATION AND PUSHING CARS TO THE LIMITS FOR OVERTAKES WHEN CARS ARE LIGHT AND GAPS ARE CLOSER. ITS LIKE A TEASER VERSION OF SUNDAY RACE ON STEROIDS. AND SUNDAY RACE SHOULD BE AS USUAL ABOUT ACTUAL DRIVER SKILLS, RACING, STRATEGY, CONSISTENCY, PLAYING THE LONG GAME AND CHANGABLE WEATHER. if the two are having a distinct flavor of their own then when sprint is planned for a suitable weekend, it will enhance the enjoyment for both the sessions due to added jeopardy due to sprint. Sprint should not feel like shorter version of Sunday race. It should have it's identity but shouldn't have pitstops to make it distinct but not so much complicatedly interesting like Sunday race with more variables to play with for the teams. _________ I personally just want it to be called as just "sprint" not "sprint race" or "sprint quali" It is kinda poetic as just calling it "sprint" is like saying it's a sprint to the starting line of main race and who goes first will start first in the main race. Just "sprint!" Not sprint quali Or sprint race etc... There'll be no confusion as no already established terms like "quali or race" are used to fit into something new and unconventional as sprint. People will just accept it as it is "Sprint" ( sprint to the starting line)

Concerning the f1 quali format, why not make Fridays quali ceremonial but 3 points for fastest lap 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd, the the sprint should be set up in reverse using the drivers current standing in the points. First race of the season would be set from the previous season finish, and would only decide the GP grid positions
@baksatibi
@baksatibi 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the rules are written to be consequential, for example look at the term 'gained a lasting advantage', isn't that consequential? Besides, the stewards are switched around every race weekend, partly to prevent favoring a driver or a team over a season. I heard this weekend there were two former F1 drivers instead of the usual one, maybe that's why they were more lenient with Max in that incident.
@my2cents366
@my2cents366 2 жыл бұрын
There are rules those could be used to determine the penalty. The rule also say, if you are on the inside and behind, you must not miss the apex. That is why Hamilton got penalty in Silverstone because Hamilton's wheel was not hugging the inside curve. The rules also says, if the car on the outside is substantially along side (Hamilton was ahead when they enter the turn) at the turn entry, you must leave 1 car width for the car. The rules also say, you should not intentionally run the opponent wide or try to crash. This is why I don't believe they will release Max's onboard. Because, if Max is try to crash, that will comes with a very hefty penalty. So, it is not only one rule, there are several rules which they completely ignore and picked one that was the lap time was slower. When you are in wheel to wheel battel, your lap time will always be slower. That is why slower cars sometime don't fight wheel to wheel because they will lose time to their opponent.

You know, there might be something OTHER than the footage that the stewards can use. The telemetry. I wonder if the stewards can request the telemetry for the lap where Max and Lewis went wide and the 2 laps before and after. Overlay all 5. One of the lines is the steering graph. If the steering graph for that lap is significantly different than the other laps, then you can extrapolate what the steering angle was and just how much he may or may not have tried to push Lewis off the track.
@carchocolate93
@carchocolate93 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe. He sent it into that corner, so whether he was trying to push loois out or not the steering would be different...
@simonzdrenka3851
@simonzdrenka3851 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm. Yes and No. Verstappen was on the inside and therefore did not enter the corner the same way as his other laps. When you enter a corner in a different way to your normal racing line its not an apples to apples comparison in regards to steering angle. And then there is the matter of tire slip. The car is not glued to the track. It does have a slip angle in a corner (usually in a oversteery direction from mid corner onwards) so you would have to take that into account.

My idea would be Practice 1 and 2 Friday, Saturday Qualifying in the Morning and Sprint Race in the evening/afternoon(reverse grid with points for the top ten, point for each place 1st=10/10th=1) and Race Sunday using qualifying results. Basically you lose one practice(Less info, Tommy would like that).

I think what brings more movement in the field is that with a regular weekend, you have 2 types of strategy in the field. From P11 they can go long thanks to free tyre choice. With the sprint who is mostly boring after the start, because drivers just settel for the position, its also set the tactics for the whole field at the same strategy, because only one is the fastest. You get a boring sprint and on top a boring race because all drivers drive the same strategy. Maybe you have to add that the top 5 from the sprint have to use the sprint tyre for the start of the race or something.
