It was totally a fair race, because Ricciardo qualified on the front row and dominated the whole race. When Max and Hamilton crashed, they were behind off awful pitstops. It's not like the other random wins, where a safety car did this, or someone came from behind in some fluke way. This was a clean win and it was wonderful.

I'd like to point out that when Lando asked his race engineer to ask Daniel to be faster, Daniel was intentionally going slow to give Lando a tow for securing P2. You can hear it in the race comms. Only when Daniel's race engineer asked him to go faster, did he actually go fast and was able to score the fastest lap as well. So I do feel Daniel was the better driver this weekend.

They also seem to forget who is Dan getting DRS or a tow from like Lando was so of course Lando felt quicker it was a little ploy by Lando to see if Mclaren would let him by because they sacrificed Dan last races for Lando for little to no reason so always a chance they do it again.

Kinda outrageous to not give Bottas an A* to be honest. You were talking about how difficult Monza is to overtake and how the DRS trains are tough. Bottas went from P19 to P3. Even if he went past Perez, there was no way he was getting past the McLarens. McLarens aren't just fast because they have Mercedes engines, they also have very little downforce so they are straight line rockets. Also Perez went on to get a penalty, which made risking to get past him worthless. Also his medium tyres died, everyone ahead of him was on hards.

Ecstatic for a McLaren 1-2 as a long time McLaren fan. Just a note - Ricciardo's full radio was released and at lap 33(with Lando 0.9S behind) Ricciardo asked if he should keep Lando "close" and the team responded with pace is good, keep this pace till the end of the race.This was most likely to keep Lando in DRS range, keep the train going an stave off an attack from Perez and Bottas. To Lando's credit, when he asked Daniel to speed up at Lap 35, he probably was unaware of the Strat from the other side of the garage. Shortly after that, we saw Daniel pick up the pace and open up a gap consistently above 1second. Lando is a racer, he wants to race - he also probably wanted that first win for McLaren which is totally understandable. Maybe his radio message could have been a little less cheeky, but he's young and adrenaline is real. Kudo's to both sides of the McLaren garage for a perfect strategy and keeping calm and cool through this race. Lando's time as a race winner will come, and it will probably come sooner with both he and Ricciardo operating at 100%. Daniels improvement will help him immensely as the time will come when he might need Daniels help with a race win as well. I think Daniel will happily do it.

The difficulty with the sprint race qualifying is figuring out what the point of it is. By using it to set the grid, it affects the race in ways that feel so unnatural. But if there's nothing to be gained by it, then you'd see the cars just go ultra-cautious, because there's nothing to gain by winning or even passing, but there's much to lose by wrecking.

If you understand turn 1, the line Lewis took was pretty conventional. He wasn't "squeezing" Max. He was taking the racing line. I think your justification that oh well that is what Max does and that is how he is quite weak. Max's expectation that everyone else should back out of the way and let him passed, and if they don't it's a crash and the other drivers fault is Bull. I think this Penalty might be the begin of the FIA saying that is not the way this is going to work. Hamilton clearly has said that if Max is going to push then he will push back. Hamilton for a while has backed out and took a longer view of taking a loss on a minor battle to win the war, but now those minor battles are adding up so he has to take the fight back to Max.

Indeed. Hamilton backed out and drove over the kerbs to avoid a crash with Verstappen earlier in the race at the Variante della Roggia. If he hadn't he would have been at fault in that situation. Verstappen has a Senna-like attitude where he expects everyone else to move aside for him if they don't want to crash, and Hamilton, in the incident where they crashed, held station as Verstappen did earlier. The difference is that Verstappen didn't take the avoiding action that Hamilton did in the earlier incident. I hope someone at Red Bull takes him aside and tells him to wise up, as his attitude may cost him the championship, and them the constructor's championship.

@davey2487

Exactly. This will essentially remove the whole effect of the grid penalty, because he'll have to start at the back. And because overtaking is hard at Sochi, it's a good place to serve this penalty, considering the fact that he's already got one. He could also maybe get lucky and profit from a (virtual) safety car if a crash happens. Almost every F1 race at Sochi has seen at least one (virtual) safetycar.

@@sbinotto3780 Relatively speaking a driver losses less time/places when doing a pitstop during vsc, on the condition that everybody else or most other drivers don't pit as well. So if Verstappen goes long on his first stint and the vsc happens when all/most other drivers have already made their pitstop, he will profit from it. He'll probably go with the hard compound and go long, to make up as much time as possible while the drivers in front of him are going into the pits. This gives him free air and enables him to drive a lot faster then he'd be able to with all those cars in front of him.

As a fan of both Max and Lewis, I can't accept the "racing incident" line. Max was never ahead, not even close, and the rules say he has to give way, and he knows this from earlier in the season. At no point was there a hope in hell that he'd pull off the move, because Lewis's car was pointing straight at the second apex and there's no way he could have left more room, given the speed he was doing. I don't buy the argument that Max would have an opportunity later either. The Red Bull pace was no match for Mercedes on the day. Max knew that if Lewis got ahead, he was almost certainly staying there. He was angry that the pitstop put him in that position, and he was damned if Lewis was going to beat him. If it hadn't been for the halo, Lewis might be quadriplegic now. Even with the halo, he's lucky not to have suffered spinal compression. Don't get me wrong, I want close battles, but Max had the opportunity (and has the mental capacity to do the calculation) to take the safe option, rather than the one which was 100% guaranteed to take them both out. I think that his penalty, which could have been much worse, reflects the desire not to kill the racing.

@@floriskoop1737 Umm so let me get this straight... You think Max's omission of ME changes the fact that he was not talking about himself. Max may have omitted ME... but he was talking about what happens when you don't leave a torpedo space.
@floriskoop1737
@floriskoop1737 2 жыл бұрын
@@room2162 Well, if he said ...leave ME space... he could be seen as somewhat arrogant and maybe even narcissistic. I think that's unfair and trying to frame Max. He said "leave A space". By that I believe he means that when you squeeze someone as bad as LH did at the chicane, chances are that they collide. Max COULD have backed out and cut the chicane, but that would mean his overtake would be seen as illegal and he should have given the position back, making his chances to overtake Lewis later on very small. Because of that, he wanted to stick to his overtake, which was aggressive but totally fair. He had fresh and warm tyres, better grip, and used it to brake and turn the car in a very efficient way through Turn 1 to end up on the inside of Turn 2. The fact that Hamilton squeezed him so much, caused him to run over the sausage kerb, launching his Redbull into Lewis' car. (If anything, that shows that the artificial track limits (sausage kerbs launching cars (F3 crash of some years ago at parabolica?), runoff enabling drivers to continue without consequences, of most of the tracks of today are a joke. Just look at the natural track limits of Zandvoort; when you go over the limit, you end up in the grass or gravel and you are slower. Or you completely lose the car and crash into the barrier. That's how a track should be. Rewarding when being on the limit, punishing when over the limit.) Motorsport is dangerous. Max didn't mean to hit Lewis in the first place, let alone hitting him in the head with his right wheel. (What are the chances) You might not like one of them but the fact is, Max and Lewis belong to the greatest drivers of all time. They do things with those cars on the limit, others simply can't. They don't give each other an inch on track, which is great to watch for us as spectators. I love the fact that the safety of the sport is as good as it is, because that enables the drivers of today to race on the limit. That's what happened, no one got hurt. IMHO it's a racing incident, let's move on.

I suspect If I search hard enough I could find your comment from Silverstone. I am pretty sure you did not write that Max squeezed Sir Lewis too hard which cause Max to DNF. Here is the thing. Early in this race Max forced Sir Lewis off the track and they both kept racing because Sir Lewis had some where to go as we was being squeezed as you stated. . In this case where Max took them both out the race... Max had a place to go but decided to do something stupid and ended up nearly killing Lewis and ruin both of their races.. Max was not squeezed Max was giving only one option but he decided to take both of them out of the race. Only One of these two drivers is a fair and clean driver. The other is a torpedo. This is what happens when you don't leave the space in your head to make good choices.

I appreciate all your opinions. Tommy, I think you need to watch the incident again with a more objective lens. There was not room, there wasn't a gap, that is why Max hit the sausage kerb, because he had to go that low to not hit Lewis. As an impartial observer, Max was predominately at fault. I think the grid place penalty is harsh, but I thought the 10 second penalty for Lewis was harsh also. I think they are both racing incidents with Max about 60% at fault for both. Not enough to penalize, but enough that he should have been the one taking action to avoid both collisions. As the driver with the faster car most weekends, he needs to be more calculating in his risk taking.

@@karthikcmohanyt Because at corner entry Lewis was along side. Which means he dictates where they apex. He was about a car width off the apex, so he takes some of the blame for missing his entry; but it is on the car on the outside at that point to give the space to avoid a collision. Had Max given more room, he would have been ahead by the apex and had control of the corner through corner exit. But Max chose to turn in on a line that would cause a collision unless Lewis was on the absolute ideal line. Had Lewis not been so far alongside, Max would have been okay to turn in and Lewis would have been 100% the cause. In both instances, I believe the FIA allowed the result of the incident color the punishment decision. I don't think either warranted a penalty, much less the equivalent of a 10 sec penalty in both instances.

@@tylersimmons6524 At Silverstone Hamilton was far enough behind that a line which could make the corner on his own wouldn"t have had any overlap with Verstappen. Instead, he missed the apex and took a line straight into the rear of his opponent, the same way he usually wrecks his opponents. Considering how skilled a driver a multiple times champion has to be, and how many of his collisions have happened in exactly that manner it is clear the Silverstone collision was a deliberate wreck.

In my opinion, Max had a chance to avoid a crash, with the speed difference he came from a long way back, into turn 1 it was a fair challenge, he wasn't ahead at any point, it's time to bump over the chicane and have another go later on. Further more it seems when Lewis backs off there isn't a crash, when he doesn't there is.

@@trousers2 whilst I agreed it’s a racing incident we also need to consider that Max had multiple options to avoid the contact, Hamilton had one which involved Max taking his place. I’m looking at this incident in relation to Hungary, Alonso shut the door so many times and fans praised him for blocking Hamilton. Hamilton waited and made the move when he could. In this case we have Hamilton shutting the door once and it ending in a crash, why is it ok for one driver to shut the door and the other not, why is one driver expected to wait 11 laps to make his move work when the other can’t wait for 2 corners? That’s what I struggle with accepting in Max’s driving style, this expectation that there will always be room for him but he can’t give it either. I would find it a lot easier to defend Max if there was some give and take but if I’m honest I can’t think of any scenarios where Max left an inch of room available to another driver when he needed to defend.

About the Damon Hill comments that "Max crashed on purpose" but those same comments were immediately stopped for Lewis in Silverstone.. I feel like the F1 world is heavily biased towards brittish drivers as the majority of the people working for F1 are Brits. Same can be said for Lando, Brundle doesn't stop praising him when he makes mistakes saying that "he is learning, killer instinct, he crashed because he learns, blablabla." And when another driver makes the same thing, oh he's just bad init

Sprints in its current form doesn't add anything. My thoughts if you want it to work try the traditional karting approach of 3 short heat races of random grid but average start position is the same for each driver works out the same over the 3 races. Grid is sorted by who does best over the 3 races. That way you have mixed up races but keeps the grand prix starting grid legit... or get rid of it all together.
