8:13 "Some modders got their hands on the original source code of Mario 64" The PC port is based on the fan decompilation effort of the game. They painstakingly reverse engineered the game from scratch for over 2 years without any help any leaked Nintendo material. A group outside the fan decompilation took that and modified it so that it can be rebuilt as a PC game instead of an N64 game. Nintendo only took down any links hosting the exe file as that contained Nintendo assets. Anyone can still use the source code of the PC port and a ROM and build the PC port themselves.

Backwards engineering is 100% legal too. If it's 100% cleanroom the code cannot be claimed by Nintendo. Now, actual references to Mario, the models, textures, and art assets, that's still owned by Nintendo. But if someone replaced all of that Nintendo wouldn't have a legal leg to stand on. "Imagine if they remade 64 with the movement mechanics of Odyssey." As a SM64 connoisseur...*strokes monocle*...this would either be kinda cool or very disappointing. Nothing I'd _really_ enjoy much more. The wallkicking in Odyssey was terrible, and diving didn't give you nearly as much speed. Hat throws were cool, but I'd prefer if they kept the 64 dive. I don't have much of a problem with not being able to turn on a dime because sideflips solve that. I agree with you on the wallkicks, but it should be toggleable, so that more experienced players can turn off the sliding.
@Hazzardous134 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I had a shaky opinion on that part too. I used to speedrun SM64, and really enjoyed it's movement and all the quirks it brought with it. Personally, I might actually prefer a remaster with the exact same engine to a remake, but at the very least I'd love some toggleable options. Ofc, Nintendo has a strong history of enforcing one way of play that they polish to death rather than giving lots of options, so I'm not expecting much here if it is a remake. The real dream would be to have N64 come to switch online and include SM64 with all its quirks, and then to have a proper remake release separately. I also doubt they'd choose to shoot themselves in the foot sales-wise like that, but a boy can dream. Maybe if they're released far enough apart?

I’ve recently been replaying Mario 64 and had arrived to the same conclusion, that Mario 64 simply hasn’t aged well, and in fact, is designed I’m such a way that makes it really frustrating. I know that it was a pioneer and great for its time, and that there were hardware limitations, but even at the time, there were third party 3D games coming out that really made clever use of the systems hardware, and produced games that just put Mario 64 to shame (e.g. Rogue Squadron, Banjo Kazooie). So I think you are absolutely on point, Bob, that if they’re gonna rerelease Mario 64, they NEED to make some fundamental control changes in order for that game to be really enjoyable in 2020.

@@BenderBendingRodriguezOFFICIAL Nostalgia is a hell of a drug, and yes, there is an online community dedicated to racing and co-op, but those groups do not represent 99.9% of the people who love and cherish this game. The game sucks in 2020. I played it through 100% last week and the later half of the game is an absolute mess. Most courses are vertical platforming nightmares, and even the good courses often have very similar stars, there's nothing exciting about climbing to the very top of Tall Tall Mountain THREE TIMES. This just isn't debatable. The game has not aged well, by all the merits of the phrase. It was obviously an important game for the industry and an important game to many people but the game does not hold a candle to any of it's own successors.

According to Modern Vintage Gamer the reason for those low Res textures that were used in mario 64 & Ocarina of time were because of a certain ram chip on the console that only contained 4Kbs of ram. He said 12-16Kbs would have been a better choice but then the chip would have likely needed to be bigger.

the original all stars remastered the games in snes mario style why not new 3d mario style?
@keithrhodes59124 жыл бұрын
One thing I could say is for a full HD Remake of Super Mario 64 is to use the movements they he can do in Super Mario Galaxy, and include more hats instead of the usual hats or costumes (Metal, Invisible, Flight). Also include Luigi into the game, because in the other games that I have played like Super Mario Bros. for Wii U, they allow you use him if you can't get past a level. 120 stars is fine but it should also include things like purple coins to get stars, and they should also include things like green stars as well.

If they either do a remake or a remaster they should let us stay inside of a level everytime we get a star without kicking us out... That was very frustrating xD
@airjodran4 жыл бұрын
Some levels had stars designed around you having to exit the level. BOB Koopa race didn't appear until you killed King bob omb. Whomp's top of the tower didn't appear until you killed the Big Whomp. JRB couldn't do red coins until you got the first ship star. There's more like this as well. So quite a bit would have to be changed with how you get those stars.

7:10 since you mention that Kaze made a video about Mario’s model has more polys than the levels and fixing it.

I played the pc port about 15 years ago, donno who installed it on my dad's computer. I would play with my brother when my parents were out and quickly shut it down when they came back. Parents were pretty strict so it felt like we were doing drugs or smth

I don't understand why this game is still considered to be so good. I understand that for the time it was light-years ahead of the competition; but if the game really suffers from clunky controls, muddy visuals and awkward level design then it seems to be way below average nowadays. Nowhere near top 100 games level. Again, it was amazing for the time, but I just don't understand what makes it so good nowadays.

If they remade Super Mario 64, I would love if they added a nod to Royal Raceway which is just right next to the castle. Yeah, of all things I want, I want to see a racetrack. It'd be a touching little detail, don't gotta be big.

1:14 honestly, those little (frustrated ground pound reset) moments like that, are so bitter-sweet looking back on them! Might just be me, but I'd like to be able to toggle between the old and new as a feature of a remake.

its hoenstly just a much safer option. the new controls means some levels will be way easier etc. it might also lose that nostalgic touch and basically feel like a completely different game.

My hope for all these games is that they’re switch lite compatible with the ability to remove motion controls, cause if Nintendo can do it in odyssey, I’m hopeful for what they can do in a Mario Galaxy port.

Hey Bob, I've been playing Mario 64 lately and I agree with you 100% on the need for a remake. The greatest difficulty curve is the camera. It makes levels needlessly harder than they are. And I was thinking that if this game was remade using oddessys engine, it'd be too easy. So a remake is the answer, let's see that it happens... Oh wait, it's Nintendo.

the pc port is significant because it allows for more customization of the games code, rather than a simple mod of the game on emulator. Also, it's a lot more impressive than "some guys got the source code", they began work on it before the source code leak and it released a couple days before the source code leak, they reverse engineered and found out the source code all by themselves
@oopsimdead25784 жыл бұрын
man i would love just a port of Galaxy. Probably my favorite 3D Mario game. If they could do 64 with not ass camera controls i'd be interested, but it really doesn't compare to how good sunshine and galaxy are. i get people have nostalgia for it, i do too. i played so much mario 64 as a kid. it's just aged at this point and aren't as enjoyable to play any more.

Imagine a remake of mario rpg where they get back with square enix and gave it a more action based combat system like the new ff7, fleshed out the world even more, added new areas to explore, and gave us a fully realised "mushroom kingdom" like we haven't seen since the original.
