There are quite a bit of games that the community has been able to port games like Super Mario 64, the GTA trilogy, and Sonic Mania. Not every game runs perfectly, but overclocking the system can help stabilize frame rates for a good handful of games. It still is best for PS1/PSP/Vita titles, but the hacking scene is incredibly dedicated.

I actually found I had better luck with retro emulation by using the emulators that were made for the PSP and running them inside Adrenaline, as the PSP was an emulation machine. At least for what I played, which was mainly SNES, GBA, and NeoGeo/Capcom arcade systems.
@KGFIQ
@KGFIQ 11 ай бұрын
how did you do that?
@SuigaRou
@SuigaRou 11 ай бұрын
@@KGFIQ It's been a while since I did it, but if I remember correctly, you have to put the emulators for the PSP into the Adrenaline folder. Inside the adrenaline folder, there should be a folder that's named "PSP", and in that one there's one named "Game". That's where you'll want to extract your emulators to. So adrenaline/PSP/Game. Then you'll see them show up in the games section of your PSP XMB (home screen) in adrenaline, where you can launch them.
@Mirauge

@SuigaRou I find this is the case in most circumstances. regardless od the device used. these all in one emulators kinda suck. they are awesome for what they are. I just think they need some time. even retroarch which is the go to. struggles all the time with certain cores
@Cr3zant
@Cr3zant 10 ай бұрын
@@Mirauge It has to do with the fact all-in-one's stretch their resources to fit as many systems as possible instead of refining them, and retroarch is run in such a way that they actively alienate any developers who port stuff into cores for them with bizarre licensing and a refusal to maintain proper updates. They're still using a version of mame from 2003, an over 20 year old version.

One thing you missed were some of the homebrew ports of old games to the system - for example there's a native port of SM64 that runs way better than Daedalus. Among my favorites are AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) and Cannonball (a port of OutRun). Also it's sad to say but you might also have more luck in the emulation department by running some of the emulators made for the PSP within Adrenaline, like Snes9x and gpsp. They're on the whole older and less accurate than the native Vita ones, but accuracy doesn't count for much when you can't run the games full-speed. Finally, and this is a bit of an "🤓Umm, actually" comment: the PSP and PS1 emulation on the Vita is so good because technically it's not emulation, at least partially. The Vita has a secondary MIPS CPU specifically for running PSP mode, and the PSP CPU's instruction set is a superset of the PS1's so the PSP itself was actually running PS1 games natively.

13:42. Btw to clarify Adrenaline is not in the traditional way an "Emulator" like most emulators are a softwares that emulate hardware, instead It uses dedicated PSP hardware that the PSVita has to run the PSP mode including the backwards compatibility it already has for PSOne. The Adrenaline is pretty much unlocking the software the PSvita already has to run the PSP and PSOne games, and let you use it without restrictions. Sony, did really amazing working with the Vita.

Some of my favourite things to do is push hacked consoles to their limits with certain types of home brew and game emulation. Some worth note are homebrew ports of Sonic Mania and Final Fantasy IV 3D (these also exist in other homebrew community’s like the 3DS; it’s pretty fun to see how they compare). If you want decent emulation for GBA on a PSVita I would recommend gpSP for the PSP (it’s actually a PSP home brew that you run in adrenaline). There’s also cool UI things like making bubble icons for your PSP games and homebrew. I’d say a nice addition would be FTP clients to wirelessly send games to and from different devices (I’ve transferred GBA games to and from my hacked PSVita to my hacked 3DS; seeing those two consoles talk with each other is fun). Finally I’d say the retro flow launcher is a cool piece of homebrew that displays your games similarly to the Wii’s wiiflow application that can categorise your PSVita, PSP and PS1 library with cover art and a cool UI. Glad to hear you had a better time this round; I personally enjoy the struggle of unlocking the devices I own 😅

Micro USB is 16 years old. USB-C's spec first started coming out 11 years ago but the first devices popped up around 8 years ago... and we're still seeing Micro-USB in some new devices, even now. :) USB-C is as old as Micro USB was when its replacement appeared and yet is still going strong because of its versatility for reuse for other things (thunderbolt etc). I think that's why folk look down on microUSB - it's seen as basically just a power connector that couldn't really do anything else that well. We even had those fugly micro type 3s attempt to fix that.

I appreciate that you gave it another look. It seemed to me that most of your problems with the hack stemmed from a general dislike of certain stock firmware features that the hack doesn't change. As far as custom firmware goes, the difficulty with installing for Vita is very front-loaded. Once it's done, the hack is pretty seamless. This is an immediately noted improvement over the custom firmware for most other consoles, which requires actions to be taken on every reboot. The Vita is definitely not a go-to for emulation. Since the base clock speed of the Vita is a shockingly low 333MHZ. You'll have a hard time getting anything not optimized for PlayStation hardware to run. This can be significantly improved through overclocking, which is really simple on Vita cfw. The Vita has it's downsides, so you definitely have to know what your getting into before you invest time, energy, and money into it.

Unfortunately, their Q Lite is just going to be a remote play device. Sony just doesn't want to get into the handheld market, at least for now which I think is a mistake. I remember when one of their directors (former director now) said this message several years ago in an interview in front of a live audience (and I'm paraphrasing), "we just don't see the reason why we should make another portable handheld when you can just play games on your smartphone". Now, maybe they are secretly developing a handheld for the distant future but it seems unlikely. It would be awesome if they made a handheld similar to the Vita but not only could it stream and do remote play but it could also be dockable. Or, they just basically make a handheld similar to the GPD Win 4 (basically more like a handheld PC).

Hey Wulff, had a hacked Vita for a few years now (hacked Vita TV and OG OLED model as a project early on in the pandemic). Totally agree about the amazing support to play Vita, PSP, and PS1, hands down my favorite device for those. But also agree about the disappointing Nintendo emulation. I've had issues with emulating Nintendo on the PSP, Vita, and PS3. On the other hand, I've had great results with all Nintendo emulation on the 3DS and Wii U, and poor results with emulating PS1. I've had other people say that's not true and it's fine but I'm glad to see somebody else experienced similar issues and I'm not alone in this. I just think that Nintendo having built in virtual console and/or native support always helps, ditto for Sony on their side. I still love both the Vita and 3DS, regardless.

Sometimes connecting to the computer is frustrating and doesn’t want to make the initial connection but I’ve done 4 vitas and I recommend them as the best handheld emulator for the money, quality, and overall experience.

I think you overthought this one. This hack is about as easy as it gets. I hacked 3 vitas at the same time in less than 20 minutes. Also, haven’t had any slowness on the emulated systems you talked about. It wasn’t that hard to hack before this browser method but now it’s even more seamless. You can even hack the 1000 models without any official Sony memory.

The PS Vita has been pretty much the most pleasant experience of my modded handhelds, getting games onto it is handy with PKGj and compared to the 3DS it was half the pain, the 3DS is just too much work to get games onto it and I haven't found a workaround that makes me want to play it, but I do get the gripes with the Vita and setting up an FTP protocol so you can transfer everything in the beginning.

A well written guide will not require you to read everything before attempting. It will present you with everything you need to know for each step so you can execute it as you read through. A really good guide will be no different than having an expert present to walk you through each step. That said, for things like this (or most things tech), it’s a good idea to at least skim the whole thing before starting… 😅. Too many things can go wrong or if you don’t…or even if you do!

if didnt know that port on the bottom of handheld is for more than charging. you can also connect to obs or whatever you use for streaming so can play on tv no physical modding required. the port on the top was actually supposed to do this, but i havent seen the adapter for it, but the handheld does have a chip inside like the switch does. this requires a plugin from autoplugins app in order to cast to tv or pc. i dont understand why someone would throw away a vita. my neighbor was throwing out random junk cause they were moving and to my surprise the first thing i found was a ds lite. when found this i decided to dig deeper in the mess of junk cause i needed the charge cable and at the bottom of a box filled with hot wheel cars and legos was a vita 1000. no cable again so taking a chance i ordered one on amazon and jackpot it worked. a little damaged and right analog stick wont work, but touch functionality and everything else was fine. now im waiting on a new shell and stick, but to those that need a new analog stick for the 1000 model its like searching for a needle in a haystack. most replacements are for the 2000 model and they dont work with the older model

In my experience, retroarch has never been reliable for literally anything. The stand alone emulators are what actually work. But retroarch has like a super split down the middle vibe in the vita community. Mostly because it doesn't actually work or run at all on some vitas and the reason isn't super clear. Or from what I saw when I was looking into it. The other thing a lot of us have is an overclocking doohickey installed. Which helps an awful lot with frames and such.

Good video, but a few notes from someone thats been doing this with vitas for a few years: -If your Vita has 3.60 or below, stay on/update to that, the process for that is far easier than the hack for 3.65 (it'll even install molecularshell for you when you do the webexploit) and is functionally identical to 3.65 - If you press start in vitashell you can switch from FTP to USB, and you can just set the USB device to memory card, or sd2vita, and transfer your files over that way. - the reason PS1 and PSP 'emulation' run so smooth is because the vita has an overclocked PSP SOC included (and the PSP is basically a superclocked PS1, so those games run natively as well) - ux0/ is your memory card so that will be the directory pspemu is in, all the other directories are system directories The other 2 you *might* run into are imc0/ (internal memory card if you have another memory card inserted) and uma0/ (gamecard) but you generally won't need to touch those, and they aren't mounted by default - Chiaki used to work but an update to the PS5 changed some remote play stuff, and the app hasn't been updated to accommodate this

Also, there's a plugin called ReVita that lets you change and modify controls on a per game basis, for instance I've completely remapped Star Wars Battlefront II for PSP to have modern controls. Yes modding the vita is very daunting. I was even scared when I attempted to mod mine but knowing the right KZbinrs to follow along with and the proper written guides is key. Of all of them, yes, Vita is the most complicated. 3DS is super simple, and you can download pretty much ready to go images for retropies. As far as the GBA performance in Retro Arch, did you try changing the emulator core? I have found that GBA Next is really good, I played through a bunch of pokemon romhacks on there. For SNES I used a different emulator core as well and played through FFV without issue. And Yes, N64 is super hit or miss (mainly miss). Overall, I love the OLED screen on the Vita I have, so its my go to for PS1/PSP/Vita emulation and a lot of 16-bit games. @@bartkomedy I've overclocked 3 vitas at this point. I have to say that my experience differs by quite a lot. Overclocking everything to make knocked maybe...10-15% off my battery life without the overclock.

i mean definitely dont just run your vita at 500, you use it when you need to depending on the game. for example borderlands 2 and the jak and daxter collection both get pretty terrible performance on 333 so when playing those games you oc, then set it back to default when done. 99% of games dont need it, so leaving it on like you would a computers oc is just pointless.

@orionfell Once I noticed the severe battery issues I actually completely disabled the overclock and still have poopoo battery life, it's not running the OC nonstop I think something just went wrong, like I said likely a poor quality replacement battery that got ruined. I'm not refuting people that have had good experiences with it, not by any means, just as a word of caution just as anything else jailbreaking related.

I've been hacking systems for years, and I even soldered a few back in the 32bit era, and while I didn't find the Vita hack super hard, it wasn't super easy either(and I'm far from being an expert). As for emulation, it's hit or miss, and the main reason I hacked my Vita was for native PS1/PSP games, as that's a game changer for me. Being able to play PSP games, with actual dual analog sticks and not that crap nub, is worth it all on it's own. Being able to use a micro SD is also one of the best features of the hack. So while emulation isn't great for some newer systems, the ones that run well, run very well and the Android port scene is pretty robust as well. When I first hacked my Vita, I did run tons of emulation on it, but since getting an Odin(and soon a Steam Deck), I just prefer other devices to fill that need. But it was very solid for the time I used it, I just made sure not to try and run things above it's weight class and everything was fine. But it's still the ultimate handheld for PS1, PSP and of course the Vita itself(3 amazing generations of Sony systems in the palm of your hand).

snes and gba run fine, you just gotta try the other retroarch cores, gpsp and snes 9x2002 were the best i found

The vita is excellent for playing n64, snes, nes, gba, and gbc idk what plugins you’re running but there are ones that overclock the system to make it run smoother. Also there have been a lot of updates to those emulators for vita which make them run perfectly. Ex. DaedalusX64, psnes, pnes, mgba run perfectly with most roms. N64 is the only one that might not be the most stable at times

You say the vita is excellent for playing n64, then you say n64 is the only one that might not be the most stable at times. Wulff didn't have much luck with it.

@@SportbikerNZ I posted my reply 3 months after he uploaded this video so n64 was working fully at that point. I was saying that certain games had lower fps. Try it for yourself. It’s nice performance

I'm sorry, but you followed a guide to jailbreak your device, something that can brick it without reading it fully at first before doing it? You are playing with fire.

Adrenaline IS native, because the Vita has PSP hardware built in. This is amazing now, but it made the price of the console higher, thus contributing to it’s failure. The PSP hardware is there, because Sony wanted PSP games to be downloadable from the PS Store.

Same lol, I was around the same age and did it around the same time. The only major issue I remember having ended up being caused by a broken sd card reader when I was trying to get the sd2vita working

As a Vita owner please just let me say THANK YOU for making this video. I was trying to hack it at the end of last year and was infuriated to no end at how broken the process was. I finally was able to thanks to the wifi method but even after doing that it's incredibly convoluted to do anything w a hacked vita that requires a usb cable. From the bottom of my heart thank you for calling out how trash the Vita is and for taking the community down a notch. I no longer feel as dumb for being frustrated with it. (In fact now I'm wondering if I should try a retro handheld. Up until now I assumed they are no good, but by the sound of things, they're actually more up to speed than the Vita is? For real?)

I used the updated video guide that's been making the rounds and....I've had 0 issues. Plays PSP, Vita, and PS1 games with no issues. I was even able to use my FFX save between my vita and PS5 so I could always play it on the go so honestly, the video does a damn good job.

For me the big roadblock of emulation is, that i dont want to fiddle around with files on my pc or inside a system - it makes me super uncomfortable... i just want to get the system running on the system itself, use the same system to get all the stuff and games i need and then use it without having to deal with all the jank. And the new method of unlocking the vita finally made me jump the boat and try it - love every second i can spend with my new-old system (i have the vita since system update 1.6) There is also a similar-ish way to unlock the ps4 btw
