The emulation capabilities of the Steam Deck continue to impress me, and it inspires me to use it in more was than I've ever expected. These are my experiences powering a home arcade with a Raspberry Pi, a Steam Deck and an Aya Neo NEXT (Windows machine).

More like swiss army knife of modern gaming, it's not really a good traveling console or just to play from your bed. It's kinda heavy and the battery doesn't last as much with big demanding games.

14:03 Just so you know Bob, Valve actually happens to be working on porting the steam deck UI to the desktop steam client, it’s supposed to eventually replace Big Picture mode. I’ve been playing around with it in the steam beta branch and it’s been awesome. It takes a little finagling with windows to access in it’s current state though. I’m excited to see it integrated into the stable branch eventually!

@@andrewrichards188 Oh wow, that’s good to know! Definitely something I’ll have to look into and try out. I didn’t find setting the launch parameter in the exe’s properties that hard tbh but I figured for someone setting up something like this, they’d probably wanna use as little KB/M as possible.
@XxWolfcastlexX

@@Sephiyroth He did switch out the Steam Deck for a windows based Aya handheld though, and it seems like he preferred that from what I can tell. Not gonna speak on his behalf but I recall him going over a few nitpicks with using a steam deck for the cabinet, and HoloISO would just reproduce those issues given it’s basically just telling him to install Linux. The HoloISO project is badass though, I’m actually planning on building a HoloISO gaming machine to sit alongside my windows editing one. Really stoked to do that some day.

You definitely gave me ideas on how to better make the one I wanna do. I wanted ease of use and set up & was gonna just have a switch inside. I had concerns about the monitor cause I want to play the old arcade collections on it and some are vertical. And for some reason I never thought to not have the screen under glass. So now ima have it outward and open on a rotating mount.

As someone who only experienced the feel and witnessed a true old school arcade machine. I got to say that is a pretty solid build for an arcade machine aside the fact it's all run by a modern brain for emulation. There is one arcade style I don't see often, that being the Cocktail arcade table. Now I know it's not really the most convenient version of arcade machines but it certainly is a unique one. I know some fold up and you can get one somewhere online but I've yet to see an ultimate emulation done on one like what you've done with your machine. it'd be kind of cool to have one as a nice decoration you can play and of course it would be liquid proof & Food proof.

Genius use of that monitor. For your Windows emulation needs, did you give Retrobat a try? It uses Emulation Station, though not desktop edition. It’s sort of Batocera for Windows, so to speak, essentially a script that downloads and sets up most of the emulators and front end stuff without a whole lot of pain. In fact, Retrobat can get you up and running about as quickly as a Batocera install, with the added benefit of full access to your Windows game library. But loving this idea for home arcade DIY. Excellent stuff!
