Luke, I recommend you watching alternatehistoryhub their animation style is somewhat similar to oversimplified's, but the channel is based around what would happen if several major events throughout history took a completely different route, and the eventual future that comes with that route.

Yes i love alternatehistoryhub.

Luke, I absolutely LOVE your reactions to Oversimplified. Oversimplified is such an awesome dude, and I am really glad you're enjoying these. And even though you're moving away from him for a bit, one day please react to the Russian Revolution, Napeleonic Wars etc. (off topic but I am planning on becoming a member soon👀)

I feel like, with how high tensions in Europe was at the time, if it wasn't the archduke's assassination it would have been something else. Otto von Bismarck, a Prussian politician famous for being able to read and predict how European countries would react to certain developments, once stated that "Europe today is a powder keg, and It's rulers are smoking cigars." He then predicted that in twenty years something would go down in Austria that would kickstart a major conflict. His prediction was off by only four months.

@justhereforkicks82083 жыл бұрын
Heck yeah I want you to react to part 2. I enjoy hearing your thoughts on it. WW1 isn’t nearly talked about as much WW2 or even Vietnam or the Gulf War here in the states. The Korean War is barely even mentioned, which is why it’s often called “The Forgotten War”. Perhaps too much time has passed since the First World War, but I’m always fascinated to hear about it.
@thehowlinggamer57843 жыл бұрын
Fun fact. A lot of modern military strategies you start seeing around ww1, actually saw their first use in the American Civil War. Trench warfare such as at Vicksburg and Petersburg, ironclad ships, submarines and even air power. Planes wouldn't be utilized until ww1, but in the Civil War, they used hot air balloons for a better visual command of the field. Also, the Gatlin gun, tge first sub machine gun ever used.

France lacks the finance and men to deal with a full on war and so their main strategy was to rely on heavy and interlinked fortifications to wear down the enemies which did work to an extent but later at the start of WW2 no one truly realized the LUDICROUS LEVEL of mechanization and had under estimated the level of technology that was available

Trench warfare had been a thing for years and years but the big difference of WW1 compared to all those other times it was used was the creation of the machine guns. Before people had guns that had to be reloaded giving the attackers time to get across no mans land easier. With the creation on the machine gun they just got mowed down.
@hkiller573 жыл бұрын
The other big difference was the use of barbed wire as well

If you think those conditions arounf the Archduke's assassination is surprising. You should watch extra history's "He Seminal Tragedy" episodes. It's insane.

Any one else think it's a little too convenient that the great war between the European empires is all blamed on a group of dead freedom fighters instead of the people who actually created the circumstances that lead to this war? Though, of course, no one will ever be able to prove it, it seems much more likely to me that Franz Ferdinand was assassinated on the orders of his own family. The idea of sending an agent to instigate an assassination of an unruly heir and then using it as an excuse to invade your neighbor is right out of the royal court intrigue playbook.

Not a recommendation for a video just for something you may like. Check out Dan Carlin's podcast. He does tons of history stuff and in his WW1 western front series (it's like 5 4 hour long podcasts) he talks about the initial invasion of Belgium and the personal account he's refrencing in that is nuts.

Ww1 was the industrialization and mechanization of war in general Old traditions and beliefs of honor or chivalry such as honest duels and the like no longer exists and at the end of the day it’s kill or be killed and whilst wars previously had massive impacts on a nation most were colonial wars where the fear of attacks were far from home for the most parts and it ultimately destroyed the value of soldiers since ww1 and 2 were mostly about shoveling as many troops at a problem and see what happens

If you'd like to know more about the events that actually led to WWI, it's actually broken down by another channel called Extra Credits, who are like Oversimplified, just without the bits of humor - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iV7ahH9qjNaIrdU (This is the first in the series) It's actually horrifically tragic how many chances there was to prevent WWI from happening, but there were so many failures in a row between Serbia, Austria, Russia and France that it was like watching a car crash in slow motion :(
