No one really truly understood water erosion and hydro dynamics in 1940. There was also no way to predict the erosion. We didnt have this capability until the 1970's when we could get satellite images of the earth and start to measure and compare the effects of water erosion on our coastal areas. In addition, there was no way to calculate or predict the increase and strength in storms through the decades from 1940 forward.

I think the engineers likely knew/understood the apprx timeframe these bunkers had, but also that they would very very likely last the current conflict - and in the case the war would have dragged on for a couple of decades, they could build new. These, along with the stuff on more solid ground that still stands and wouldn't have needed rebuilding, were built in a, given the volumes involved, very very short time period.

My opinion. Any engineer would of understood the landscape. The Atlantic wall was ordered to be built so the structures were constructed to be the most effective. Long term, more suitable ground could be built upon. Also, maybe the Reich thought, victory was going to be swift. At least, that's what I gather from history information and my father. He fought in the battle of the bulge. HH and EE, keep up the great history adventures!

Some would say this is because of climate change, but we've been told for thousands of years to never build your house upon the sand. Why? Because the combined effects of snow, rain, wind, storms, and gravity, the rotation of the earth all combine to slide these into the ocean. The engineers of that time knew it, 15:52 but they followed orders and got it done. The Germans lost the ability to say no to what their leaders demanded.

I been watching your videos from start and as a widowed father I think what you do with your caldron is amazing. I been trying to get my children into a love and appreciation for te outdoors as well as my love for history. I find it better to teach them nature, hunting, fishing, hiking and survival as well as an appreciation and lessons from the past to have a brighter future. However, I had a major back accident at work and undergoing intensive surgeries and therapy. They as well as friends are trying to encourage me to get better to go back out on te trails as well as exploring, even if it is going to be cane or walker. Tank you for uploading not only history as a lesson, but making it family focused as well.

I agree, here in the states, its difficult for parents to parent, esp. if you enjoy hunting and those types of traditions and some see a twisted distortion of history . Wen I lost my wife to Cancer, I had to take on both roles while working up until my work accident. Now, I got them trying to get me back outside in the wilderness I love. However, they became of age. I would love to do the same with my grandkids as I did with them. I would also say to parents "do not bring video games in a home with young children, turn the noise off at dinner and part of the evening and talk, listen to each other, explore the outdoors, culture, humanities trough museums and books. I learned the video games scenario the hard way. It is when I began taking my son and daughter hunting and fishing with me that it began to open a whole new world for them. You are a good father, I enjoy your videos and your extensive knowledge of the topics. I hope your children enjoy and love history as much as you do.

The main problem with the Atlantic Wall was it was not built in depth. Mainly a single line of defense. Nothing to stop the enemy once penetration was made. Of course it caused death and destruction but ultimately did not even hold for one day. Another great video. 🍻

My understanding was that the bunkers were built without foundations, as such they are free to move when they are shelled or bombed. If they were attached to bedrock shockwaves would crack them and destroy them. It isnt a design failure that has led them to move, it is a design feature. After all it has taken 75 years for them to move 100m or so!

Personally I don't think its sad that they end up this way. It's a fitting tribute to mother nature. They are after all reminders of a terible conflict, and the Nazis war aims. Without the monumental waste of effort that the Atlantic Wall represents they certainly would have been much harder to beat. They are however, monuments to the people who built them. Forced labourers and slaves amongst others. I'm not picking a fight, i'm here for the films too. They are interesting places. But you can't restore them due to what they represent, likewise you shouldn't destroy them because they are the last testament to a lot of lives. As such let nature have her way, plenty will survive for a long time yet. Cracking film HH and EE!

HI EE & HH. What an intriguing German WW2 coastal fortress. I think that the German powers that be built it near the edge of the coastline because it was the best position to see encroaching enemy. They also didn't expect the war to go on for over 50 yrs so they would be intact as long as needed. It would have been something to be able to explore inside the L277 anti-aircraft Bunker and the 631 b gun Regelbau. They held up pretty good considering the erosive effects of the salty ocean. Love the drone shots EE. Amazing job. Yes, sad that more history will not be available for future generations as mother nature is taking over. So much history around the world is disappearing. Some by nature and some by individuals trying to erase history. It’s videos and history channels like this, that will continue to tell the stories of what happened. At the time these bunkers were built, the Germans were expecting an invasion and more concern about defending against an invasion than the longevity of these locations. Was this one of the locations that never saw action? You and Eagle Eyes both are doing a great job preserving history on film for future generations to learn from.

It is sad. Sad to see History disappearing into the sand and waves. But Mother Nature cannot be denied her power. And yes, they could have, and probably would have, known, that building these bunkers further back would be more permanent. But, the main objective would have been to dominate the sea, and beaches, over a wide 180 degree arc. Something building further back probably wouldn't have achieved. So they built on the beach dunes. I can imagine, even when new, and in use, they could see the erosion, after the annual winter storms. As these behemoths disappear beneath the sand, their memory will fade, but, they themselves, will become immortal, and perhaps, some future History Hunters will dig them out, to marvel at the, who, what, and why. Luckily, we, have our amazing History Hunter team to record these relics of History, for us, with some amazing drone footage (awesome work EE!) and close up, and personal, views. Thank you both for sharing this amazing place with us! Cheers to you all! Stay Safe!

I already love the channel as I'm a new subscriber and also love history. I've always wanted to come to this place and today I have thanks to you my friend ... so thank you so much for taking us with you. To answer your question "why didn't they know that this would happen"? ...( i.e. the bunkers in the ocean) The answer is they DID know it was going to happen however wasn't concerned because it wasn't going to happen in their lifetime and they definitely needed those bunkers on the beach and so it was. Over time those bunkers will be completely submerged underwater and the beach further eroded and the only way to view them would be with scuba gear. This most likely will happen in the next generations lifetime so you came at a great time to document this amazing part of history. This beach has eroded significantly since then as you are currently standing on the German side meaning that the beach extended miles further out where the troops accessed the beachfront by boat so the erosion has certainly hidden much as well over time.

1stly,...where exactly is this? 2ndly to try and answer your question of why they built it there instead of further back is if they did build it further back they would have given the invading army 100-200m if not more of the beach, where they would be able to dig in etc,, you need to deny an invading army as much space as you can 3rdly, I would have had goosebumps checking out that site,...thank you

Sad,of course, that these will become fish sanctuaries. Obviously, the Germans, did not care of the erosion that would occur in the future. They needed the complexes built fast. Thanks for taking the time to show us. Thanks EE for picking this sight out. Take care

Great video once again. I have to ask if this is recorded here in Denmark? We have alot of simular bunkers along the westcoast in Jutland, that also is being swallowed by the Ocean. If you watch the danish comedymovie called -Olsen-banden i Jylland. You will se takes from the inside of an huge old german compound with a massive gun posision and from inside of some of the bunkers.

I think you are very wrong. Those things won't be gone in 5 years, they will last for hundreds. Look at the Mulberry harbours that have been subjected to hundreds of storms in the last 70+ years, they are still there. The concrete you talk of will probably sink further into the sand but it will not erode in 5 years.

17:14 :D Really good drone footage for ths one, especially when the bunkers are out of reach, smart : )) Guessing the Germans considered the location, but they needed to be on the edge of the cost for optimal position, and then just build more if they sink into the ocean. Probably better at the time to have what they needed in the best location. You could search "Cowden bomb beach" in the UK, the coast is being recalimed by the sea, unfortunately it was a practice bombing range! no bunkers, just thousands of bombs :D
