@@blakedavis2447 Its an old Canadian Joke. After the Germans surrendered Canadian troops were designated as part of the first wave in the invasion of the Japanese Home Islands, in the British tradition of using Canadians as shock troops. The Canadians started arriving at the staging areas a couple of weeks after the bombs dropped and Japan immediately surrendered basically as the Canadians were unloading their ships. The joke was that it wasn't the bombs but news that the Canadians had arrived that caused the surrender.

What a legend! If I may be so bold as to recommend another war hero to do a video on, and because you've made passing reference and mention to events relevant to my home country, it's Admiral Yi Sun-shin of Joseon dynasty Korea. He wound up leading a ramshackle navy to be that perpetual thorn in Toyotomi Hideyoshi's plan to invade the country for the sake of a land route to eventually fight Ming dynasty China. It was also at his behest that the navy polish up the design of what would be his secret weapon, the turtle ship. Cannons on its sides, plating and spikes up top, the ability to emit smoke, and an awesome dragon's head on the front, this dominated where it was fielded. Until his tragic death by stray shot, he had been undefeated at sea and is remembered as one of Korea's greatest heroes.

Léo's father: treats him like shit because he's not a "promising son" and he wouldn't amount to nothing Léo a few years later: absolute mad lad Edit: Most of the sources on his early life are in French and his father actually treated him like shit because he thought he wouldn't go nowhere in life. It got so bad between Léo and his father that he went on to live with his aunt. Before joining the army, he worked in railway construction and, by his love of dangerous tasks, got the job of dynamite demolition. He joined the army because of the economic conditions of his time and as a way to show his father he was "someone who he could be proud of". I hope his father was happy because fuck, Léo became a goddamn legend.

Hey Jack, As a Dutchman, I was very much intrigued when I learned about Leo Major on the Simple History channel and one other channel. I was wondering why we never heard of his feats during World War II, especially in his 'single handedly liberating Zwolle.' The thing is, some of his exploits were exactly as described in those channels and your YT channel. However, his feats of derring do have been much embellished after the war so some parts are just that: good stories. The true, unbelievable things he did, for which he was awarded his two DCMs, were his scouting of Zwolle, leading to it being liberated by the Canadian Army with the city being completely intact. The other heroic deed he truly did was his defense of the hill during the Korean War. Personally, I believe it was his second DCM that made him into a larger than life heroic figure and then the other stories were created. I lived most of my school life in Doetinchem, also a very old small city in about the same part of The Netherlands as Zwolle, the eastern part. In Doetinchem however, the Germans decided to make a stand and turned the city in a fortress. The medieval city, which had been spared by World War II till that time, March 1945, was then bombed into smoking ruins by the Allied Airforces, killing many citizens and leaving no trace of the medieval buildings after the war. So if the Germans really decided to hold a position, even that late in the war, they did. At Zwolle, they decided to evacuate the city and Leo Major's negotiations with the German commander (the one he gave back his pistol) did contribute to the city being spared an Allied bombardment. Major was interviewed by local Dutch radio when he was being honoured and the street in Zwolle named after him, and he himself said that the only people he found in the streets as he infiltrated, were drunk German soldiers and Dutch collaborators. He did cause some confusion and chaos by firing into the air and throwing grenades in place where they wouldn't do much damage, because he didn't want to damage anything. The German SS headquarters went up in flames but the Germans did that probably themselves to burn all their documents and executed prisoners as they were leaving the city. Major nor the citizens of Zwolle would have torched the building because the fire could potentially spread to other buildings and destroy the city after all. Dirk Staat, conservator of the official Dutch Defense Museum, researched Major's deeds and said he could not find anything about the event where Major captured 93 German soldiers. He researched the official Canadian Army military reports of Major's unit and there is no mention of this action or the DCM that he allegedly refused. And, Staat continued: 'the Canadians noted down *every single thing* that happened. If someone was 10 minutes late for inspection, it would be noted. If shoes were issued on Wednesday, it would be noted down.

The claims of liberating the city by himself is somewhat valid though in the official documents it is said he set patrols with the Dutch resistance that night but no other Canadian force entered the city before it was freed. The 93 soldiers captured are documented, the part left out is that they were all sick and were left to do some minor tasks far from being in combat shape. The refusal of the medal is unfounded/unproven and rather than a refusal to be decorated he himself mentioned that he chose to go to a city instead (he preferred a day of freedom over a medal). But the DCM was never mentioned and seems to only come from the assumption of one historian that 93 captured soldier should deserve one. So yes as all military tales they get mystified as time passes and the fog of war always distorts history. Heroes rally the troops as well so even as events unfold rumours and exaggerations might happen in real time because well he did do insane shit so other soldiers would add onto those stories and mix up the numbers of some events or attribute achievement of the whole regiment to Major. As for the claim that Canadians noted down everything well quite a few things were struck from his record (leaving without permission and drunken fights) so that claim is to take with a grain of salt.

Actually, you don't 100% do justice to how insane the Korean war story is XD To set the stage, Leo goes with his elite team of 18 french canadian scouts with nothing but PPsH russian submachine guns and kills or makes retreat the entire group defending that hill. Reinforcements are cut off and he's ordered to retreat. He says F that and decides to stay. The problem is, he's outside naval bombardment, airstrike or artillery range. The only support he's got is a mortar team nearby, which is very light in terms of support. What he'd find out is there were 2 chinese divisions nearby pretty determined to retake that hill, which amounts to around 14000 soldiers. VS 18. With nothing but one mortar team to help. So he ordered mortar fire on the hill, fought back, then they kept creeping up, so he ordered it closer. Then closer. Then so close it was hard to hear him on the radio as he ordered it even closer, then so close a shell almost fell on his head apparently. He kept going like that, sometimes needing to defend the hill without mortar strikes because the barrels of the mortars where glowing red hot and starting to warp. He kept going like that for 3 fkg days. At the end of those 3 days the reinforcements arrived. He won a 3 days long 18 vs 14000 battle. I'm french canadian and he's definitely a sadly unknown pride of the nation. Part of the reason is that there are extremely few films featuring the canadian military, modern at least, and I haven't found one with the 22nd regiment (the french canadian regiment that Leo was part of). So far, for fictional I only found Hyena Road and Passchendaele, although we feature in the forgotten battle. Such a shame. NETFLIX COME PICK THIS UP PLEASE!
