I have an original that I used as a book bag in HS back in the late 70's and early 80's. I have a repro that I carry my insulated lunch container in for work along with a few other things. It works great

Post WW1 and into WW2, the helmet was the flatter, British (M1917) type, not the M1. That loop might have allowed the helmet chin strap to catch in the space but the straps could match. My dad had the Marine version of the bag but we never saw any pads. As kids, we wore them as packs. The US Army Paratroopers wore the M1936 in lieu of other packs many times during WW2. Thanks for the video.

Don't know if this is what that cloth loop was supposed to be used for, but when I was issued this rig in 1960, if we were going to be wearing the bag on our backs, we were required to shorten the sling strap as much as possible, fold it on itself till the d-rings were about five to six inches apart, then work the thinner end of the folded strap through the cloth loop. It was a tight fit, but the sling stayed in place that way.

As I said before I have 2 of those bags. I have often wondered about the inner flap the horizontal one. To me it's got many uses. But I have found the angle head flashlight or TORCH fits it's PURPOSE. At night you can find what your looking for inside your bag without removing it. Also the torch is easily found and available. Well that's my thinking. That's the way I use it. Thanks for your time and information. Great videos thanks.👍👍

If i designed that bag, the loop inside would be used to hang it up. Loading/unloading a bag like that would be easier if you could hang it up.

Liked & Subscribed.im not exactly a collector .I do pick up US military things at flea markets & garage sales when I see something that looks interesting & that I can use for something. Always have & suppose I always will.have only watched 2 of your videos so far but will keep watching.will give me some ideas of what the things I have are & what they were made to be used for. The marine corps version of that pack sounds like the pack I used to carry my books & school supplies in. May have been a mix match set .i can take a look & make a determination with the details you gave about the different colors of materials. Thanks for sharing your information.I always felt like my sack was the coolest one at school.plenty of weekends the books got dumped & I used it to carry things I needed when I took off in the woods exploring.served me well from grade 3- 12 & some coledge .one ww2 item I’d like to get is what I’ve been told is called a paratroopers gravity knife .hold it tip down flip a switch to let the blade slide into position then flip the switch back to lock in open position. Are those hard to come by or fairly common and how much should I pay for it when I find one? Let me know please after that maybe you can answer a couple questions about some more items I have. One in particular is a 22 skeleton rifle that I always was told was some sort of paratrooper survival rifle. I don’t know if that’s true or not. Take care. Burke Wills , Sandhills of North Carolina

The M 36-37 system was the absolutely best gear until the M56. The M 44-45 was too complicated, all of that weaving of straps that added unnecessary weight. I've had and used a 1945 system and a Chinese knockoff musette bag. There's no comparison. I'd love to make the M37 in modern materials and MOLLE compatible, or see it done.

New subscriber here.... thanks for your highly informative channel ....really enjoying the videos... I recently found a bag similar to this that I'm trying to date....it has the hangar you mentioned and above that the Gold on Black U.S. ARMY tape sewn on. The canvas loop is on the top of the bag and the rear pocket attaches to it by use of a snap fastener. The side pocket also has a snap fastener. Thanks in advance for any ideas on the date of this bag.

Before WW2 it was just for officers use. During WW2 everone was using it, even WACs. The inside loop was for the three poles of the shelter half. I never could make them fit right in mine, plus they would stick out the sides. You put two in one way and the other one the opposite way. I will try to find my early FM 21-15 manual to double check it. My wife has moved my books around so my file system is broke. www.hardscrabblefarm.com/ww2/musette_bag.htm

Web Gear Review I'm not sure if my tent poles are WW2 or later. Some even said it was for TP. I figure use it for whatever fits, it should only please you. Guess I need to find my GI razor case and see if it fits in there. Maybe one of the GI cans of foot powder fits in it? Too bad I didn't know about it when I was younger, I could of asked my Grandfather or Great Uncles what they used it for. Sad that too many old guys only remember that their gear was OD green and had US on it.

Could that inner loop hold a 1914 stile bayonet across the top so the handle stcks out if iam right the bayonet was shortened to eight inches from fourteen inches so maybe the loop was removed due to the new stile bayonet being to short so the handle would not stick out enough to get a hold of

Just read that someone said the loop on the inside was for rope Before reading that my idea was that maybe some form of tool could be shoved through there, so it sits there diagonally on the back of the soldier i dont know, maybe a proper shovel, pickaxe etc. , the loop seems to have the proper size so a handle of one of these tools could fit right through it
