Thank you EE for finding this amazing location, and bringing this (almost) forgotten slice of History to us. Much has been written about the major battles of WW2, but it's stories like this, of determined defenders, and desperate invaders, that need to be seen, and heard. From the initial attack on the buses, to the loss of comrades, to the icy river, this battle would have shaken many "victorious" German troops to the core. The loss of life trying to cross that imposing barrier must have been terrible. And thank you both, for showing us that stunning shooting gallery up on the hillside. That indeed would have been an imposing obstacle to any attackers. Always so good to see such History still in place, still maintaining it's original mission. Another location that is both beautiful and has a battle story to tell. There was a tremendous amount of work to carve the rock out for the fortifications and I bet it did not happen quickly. The defenders of the bridge really had an advantage over the attacking Germans. There must have been quite a loss of life to get across the span under the fire of the machine guns from the positions you showed us. Another great location EE! I can relate to touching history. When I went to Rome and stood in the colosseeum I touched it and wondered what it was like to be a gladiator or a slave and a person watching. It was amazing to think of history this way. Not many people think like this my friend I was with had no interest in imagining the past. I do this whare ever I go. I wouloud love to go to Germany and see the things you do. Now days I'm house bound so youtude is my only way to see history you are my main channel. I wish I could visit the places you do. Another great find by EE. Well done young man, great research. That river has some serious under currents, the bottom has got to be jagged. HH take a look at 8:40, was waiting for something to surface. From the opposite side the rifle gallery is barely noticeable. That was well thought out and designed. Great stone cutting, must have been mountain dwarfs that did the work. Great video job HH. EE good site and information. Thank you for this. Stay safe and well out there.

I really enjoyed your video. Inside the shooting gallery the third step up that was tilted forward, made me think. I'll bet that was for if you need to raise up on the back of the weapon at your shoulder to depress the front of the weapon for lower targets, it enables you to do that by just pushing up on your back foot without having to extend your foot and ankle as much as you would on a flat step. Would work well on a light to medium machine gun that was fired against the shoulder as well as a rifle.

This is such an interesting story EE, well done on bringing us such a special part of WW2 History. A local army was able to hold off the German advance until the Germans sent a huge backup! That rifle range cut out of the mountain side is simply spectacular. And it was built 50+ years before the Germans arrived. ❤

What a gorgeous area. And to think that that one bridge held so much importance. What a horrible death for the German soldiers that feel and drowned in the frigid waters. 😢 Phew it is a good thing the bus driver was able to find cover tucked in the other side. I bet very disappointing for the one soldier on the other side failing to blow up the bridge and prevent the strong German force from crossing. I alwyas enjoy the humanistic stories behind these historical events HH. Great research EE. What a trek up to the rifle gallery. Wow, they had everything toilets, etc. Very self sufficient. I agree HH, I don't think that the Germans would have much success crossing that bridge from there without major casualities. Excellent defensive positioning. Thank you EE for letting us tag along. Eagle Eyes you are an amazing young man. The research you have done is outstanding. Each stop makes me more excited for the next. I find this story fascinating. If you can't beat them, drown them. I don't know but that's pretty clever to me. Imagine the soldiers surprise and dismay when they saw that there was a rush of water coming at them. The poor or lucky(depending on how you look at it) bus driver and what he went through to survive. The rifle installation and the stories those walls could tell. Captivating!! P.S. Okay kudos on the touching history tour, I'm left to imagine what area(s) this might have occurred in. East, west, north, south. Imagine the position of the rifle gallery took alot time to dig out, and considering you had suggested that it may have been built to face another, only leaves me with more uncertainty. Now i'm thinking about some poor 'slob' who's gotta haul a heck of a lot of equipment, by pack mule, up a side of a mountain, with a ravine down below into hazardous water. Just to be able to 'hollow' out a side of a mountain, you showed us the jagged edges of the interior of those caves. How are the lungs now after those hikes?

Great find Eagle Eyes! As interesting as the battle for the bridge was that mountainside fighting position was absolutely fascinating. The builders did a great job making it self-sufficient. They really did have a commanding view of the bridge from there. Definitely would have made a major difference if the Germans had attacked from that way. Will be looking forward to the next video, looks fascinating.

EE that was such a beautiful location!! I'm so glad you took us there. That mountain shooting "gallery" was very unique. I'm surprised it is there and open for the public to view. So glad it is though. I'm surprised that the local army,at the time, didn't set some troops in that mountain to rain fire down onto the Germans below and when they were trying to cross the bridge. How I would love to live around there,next to that river, very nice!!! The sneak peek for the next video looks very intriguing indeed. RR bridge,machine gun bunker??? Hmmmmm. Thanks for all your great content. Would you be able to fo a video on Wallendorf? There is an old bridge that apparently was destroyed, there is still a bunker on the German side. And also there are remains of bunkers on the mountain side that we're parr of the Siegfried line that Hitler apparently inspected.

Do I understand your story, the Germans did not expect a lot of resistance at that crossing? Imagine a convoy of trucks and troops crossing that narrow bridge and the bottle-neck created when hot bullets start arriving. What a discovery, EE! A place where you can almost say, if you aren't looking you won't see it.

I’ve said this before, I don’t think there is any place in Europe that the Germans didn’t leave some sort of footprint. You both do a lot of research to bring us these forgotten and unusual locations. Hearing the history of the bridge and then the rifle gallery is something we won’t see anywhere else. Sad to think so many lost their lives to take or defend this bridge. I couldn’t imagine being a German soldier crossing the river when the floodgates opened. It had to be horrifying. Then being on one of those buses when they were attacked. Very smart of the driver to take shelter beside the engine. Great stories and great history as always.
