I was stationed in Munich from 1966 through 1967. The Hofbrauhaus was the main point of interest for us. There weren't many 40-50 year old men left then but occasionally they would get together in the beer hall and sing the old songs. Odd feeling. Also our laundry was done at Dachau. Just another town. I got sent to Vietnam in 1968.

I live in Munich and found this episode fascinating, thank you. I now look forward to watching all episodes. The building at 5:00 minutes is indeed the one shown in the wartime photo, it was a big department store called Hertie, now sadly closed like some other department stores and shops, reflecting the huge downturn in the economy.

@@chowlissy glad you enjoyed it and thank you for the name of the department store! It’s a shame it closed down as, despite the damage I think the area looked nicer in 1945!

Great then and now photos Jon. Interesting fact: Knowing the city would be a target for bombing Hitler ordered photos of it as it stood unblemished with the intent to rebuild to its original state. These photos were later used in the rebuilding process. Thanks for more interesting content.

Glad this popped up in my YT feed - great job! My Dad was there in '45 with the 20thAD and I took him back in 1980. He also had some '45 photos, so we naturally did quite a few "then" and "now" photos. On a somber note - he could not however re-visit Dachau, those memories/recollections he did not want to re-live.

If you start at the Marienplatz most places in Munich are about a 20 minute walk max. The route I took in this was a bit all over the place so I’d recommend Google Earth (or Google Maps) focusing on the old city and picking out the key spots you’d like to see (the English Garden is a must in my opinion - huge open space and beer gardens!!!). If you go to the Hofbrauhaus find out the opening times and be there 10 minutes before it opens. It gets crazy busy there everyday and the food is just ok (but over priced). The beer is good and it’s worth it for that but there are better places to eat!

You forgot to mention that the Königsplatz was completely paved with granite tiles of about 1.5 metres square by the Nazis to use it as a place for their pompous parades. The tiles are clearly visible in the later footage. It was then used mostly as a huge parking lot, and us Munichians had a big controversial struggle to get it rebuilt to its nearly original design from the around 1830. Many right wingers (and neonazis) believed the heroic and quite sterile "Plattensee" (sea of tiles) should remain.

At 2:50 you show "Swasrtikas that have not been removed" from the Hous der Kunst. FYI: Those are not Swastikas having to do with the Third Reich. Those are ancient symbols used in ancient Greece for a thousand years; yes, the Nazis took inspiration from that pattern but it wasn't put there for that reason. I lived in Munich a quarter of a century; all; of the Third Reich's Nazi symbolism has been taken down and it is abolished. Thank you for the before and after shots. Really appreciated.

By the Nazis, Munich was called 'Die Hauptstadt der Bewegung'. At 9:54, a 155 mm howitzer can be seen.

Those flags appear to be US state flags, I believe I saw the Tennessee flag. (Red, blue circle with 3 stars)

I think it was MacArthur who commanded the 42nd during WW 1 who said the rainbow stretched all across America, thus their divisional ceremonies always included every state flag.

I do enjoy the videos but I find it very sad when all you seem to show is the defeat of Germany etc and just allie victories etc. Maybe show a bit more of German life during and not after

Agreed. Munich isn’t too bad for it but other parts have suffered and I don’t personally believe we can escape our past by destroying buildings. I know there’s a lot more to it than that but in general we have to remember our past so we know where we’re going!

When I was there in the mid 80s anything of military was not interesting- going to the beer houses was🤣 It’s only while I’m out of the military, that anything militaristic is of interest 🤣 🫡
