WWF In Your House Mind Games took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 22nd 1996. It’s the 10th In Your House event, and it features an excellent main event that many consider to be one of Shawn Michaels’ finest matches.
After Mankind defeated The Undertaker in the SummerSlam 96 Boiler Room Brawl, he was given a title shot against Shawn Michaels. The Mind Games main event would allow HBK to show a tougher and grittier side to his character, he would have to wrestle Mick Foley’s kind of match to be successful, and it turns out that this more aggressive match style would prove very entertaining for fans who ordered the PPV. Michaels vs Mankind is one of the best PPV matches of the year and both HBK & Mick Foley believe it’s one of their greatest ever performances.
Elsewhere on the card The Undertaker faces Goldust in a "Final Curtain" match, Owen Hart and The British Bulldog take on The Smoking Gunns for the WWF Tag Team Championships, and Mark Henry makes his WWF in-ring debut when he faces Jerry "The King" Lawler.
00:00 - Intro
00:58 - Savio Vega vs Justin "Hawk" Bradshaw
03:07 - José Lothario vs Jim Cornette
04:41 - Pillman, Owen and Austin Promo
06:05 - Owen Hart & British Bulldog vs The Smoking Gunns
09:02 - Mark Henry vs Jerry Lawler
11:39 - The Undertaker vs Goldust
15:23 - Shawn Michaels vs Mankind

Even in his Asshole days, Shawn always had a huge regard and respect for Mick Foley. Just a shame they only worked twice in the 90s. Edit: to think Hulk Hogan said Foley never hit the gym and eat only cheeseburgers and m and m's, is just bloody insulting. He kept up with Michaels for over 30 minutes.

I WAS THERE! This was the first wrestling event that I'd seen live, great experience, loved every minute. Figured that I'd share a few things that may not have been broadcasted. -Savio Vega was in a dark match before the Bradshaw match, it didn't last very long but Savio pulled double duty, winning both matches. If you love Savio Vega's theme music you got to hear it four times. -During the ECW invasion, Bruce Prichard comes out to talk to Paul Heyman. No pop, but people did start shouting "Brother Love." There's an interview with Prichard where he talks about that being kept off TV, it was done for local smart fans who knew that the two of them were friends. -During the Owen/Bulldog vs Smokin Guns match, a chant broke out of "Bart sucks d___" at one point. -Sid showing up was a surprise, he wasn't on the card. There was a pop for him, but it was more out of shock and awe. -While Shawn did his celebrating, Howard Finkel hung out in the ring grooving to Shawn's music, nodding his head and tapping his foot. RIP Fink.

Shawn Michaels vs Mankind for the WWF title for me was easily the best match of the whole show. It showcased the toughness of both guys, it told a great story and showed us a different side to HBK that he was more than just a showman, he could get dirty when it was called for and showed no fear going up against a psychotic maniac like Mankind. There has been endless debate about where and exactly when the attitude era started, i wouldn't say that this match was the one that kicked it all off but it definitely marked the start of a transitional period for the company as they slowly started to incorporate more of a no holds barred brawling style of wrestling that would become a huge part of the attitude era. Mick Foley showed that he could hang with the best in the business and In Your House: Mind Games was definitely one of his finest in ring performances ever and there's a very good reason why he's always called it the best match of his career.

After watching mid 95 through early 97, I'd say Goldust's feud with Razor Ramon would be the earliest starting point. Foley making his debut & the ring work incorporating more brawling & outside styles further pushed things along. I see SummerSlam 96 as the end of the New Generation era. IYH9-Survivor Series 97 as a transition period before the AE.

This match is a perfect example of why I refuse to hear any HBK slander about his first title run. They didn't have any other huge main event guys at the time besides Bret (who was on a break) and Undertaker (who it would hurt both guys to have him and Shawn go at it multiple times). Shawn was literally carrying the company putting on consistent bangers like this one. It's not his fault he had to go head to head with the brand new NWO and WCW's star studded yet geriatric main events. It would've been the same no matter who was WWF champion at the time, but Shawn was good enough to keep them afloat long enough for the attitude era to start

I think Foley said (maybe in his book) somewhere that after this was about the time he told Vince his body was just giving out at that point. Not that he didn't have some insane matches after this (including his most famous), but the point is he transitioned to more promos/comedy to make up for the fact he didn't go as hard in the ring except on special occasions because he knew he was winding down. He called it something like his most highly rated and most terrible wrestling or something like that.

Seeing Bradshaw in this type of match with red white and blue ropes immediately makes me think of the Eddie match.

I usually hate main event matches that end in a draw but it works here and HBK/Foley were great

Wow Bradshaw losses a bull rope match against a lower mid card but yet years later wins world championship in that exact same match crazy.

The ending was awesome with Mankind Paul Bearer Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker coming up from the casket was awesome and the pop was awesome. Fake Razor and Disel still I hate impostors from Vince. Brian and Owen in the ring together is amazing.

Taker, a wrestler when mentioned on whom Angle defeated throughout his career in TNA was the only one to get an applause from the TNA crowd. Taker can show up anywhere, and he has fans

I loved this version of Mankind. The best feud was Undertaker vs Mankind. This is also my favorite version of Taker.

I loved this match. I always thought the was an interesting and not really talked about observation that Mick was the match/fued that solidified the new (1st time) champs 96-99. HBK, Austin, Rock, HHH.
