WWF Survivor Series 1996 took place on November 17th 1996 in Madison Square Garden. Considered a pivotal PPV event for the WWF, the show featured the end of Shawn Michaels' "Boyhood Dream" when the Heartbreak Kid took on Sycho Sid. Shawn Michaels lost the WWF Championship during this event, and what's notable here is that the New York audience in attendance booed Shawn in favour for Sycho Sid.
Elsewhere on the show, Stone Cold Steve Austin was able shine in his match with the returning Bret "Hitman" Hart. Stone Cold had been gaining a lot of attention in the run-up to Survivor Series, and fans were also eager to see Bret return to action ever since he walked away following WrestleMania XII. Bret Hart vs Steve Austin at Survivor Series turns out to be an absolute classic, with many fans preferring this encounter over their WrestleMania 13 Submission Match.
The Undertaker also makes his return following In Your House: Buried Alive. A new and improved Undertaker promised to usher in a new age of darkness in the build-up to Survivor Series, and the Undertaker delivered just that in his match with Mankind.
These 3 imporant matches are covered in today's video along with the Survivor Series tag team matches that also happened during the event.
00:00 - Owen, Davey & The New Rockers vs Furnas, LaFon & The Godwinns
05:32 - The Undertaker vs Mankind
09:19 - Team Helmsley vs Team Mero
12:33 - Bret Hart vs Stone Cold Steve Austin
20:48 - Faarooq, Vader, Fake Razor & Diesel vs Flash Funk, Yokozuna, Savio & Snuka
22:18 - Shawn Michaels vs Sycho Sid

Austin and Bret in this ppv had such a great fight feel, and you can feel it in the atmosphere in the whole arena. This Survivor Series match together with their WM13 encounter are two of my favorite matches with Stone Cold and The Hitman.. and JR saying “it’s all about attitude for Austin then and now” is foreshadowing for sure.

Yokozuna was one of my favourites from the new generation era and it's sad to see his WWF career end on such a low note. Doing one illegal move in a throwaway match. Sadly this wouldn't be the lowest point of his career, that was to come three years later at Heroes of Wrestling.

@Energetic Coach I heard that as well, but you did not want to piss him off. In the mid '90's a jobber named Dan Dubiel disrespected Yokozuna's manager, Mr. Fuji. In the match, Yoko gave him the Banzai Drop with full force bouncing off of him and stayed seated on him longer than usual after the match was over.

@Energetic Coach True, by 1996 he'd put on so much weight he could barely perform at that point. But watch one of his matches from 1992 and 1993, the difference is night and day. He was surprisingly agile for a man his size at that time, with some impressive moves in his arsenal.

I mean, Stone Cold cutting that promo and his entrance just gives me goosebumps. Like a real street fight was about to break out. It was a totally different feeling from the previous WWF stuff. Big contrast compared to the Taker/Paul Bearer storyline. The other thing that I notice is that Austin and Hart focus on hurting each other the entire match. They don’t stop to do some act for the crowd or don’t symbol to the crowd that they are about to do a signature move. They just get after each other.

Clarence's reaction to that terrifying Al Snow bump is great. I think Undertaker's expanded moveset is a great response to the arrival of an enemy like Mankind. Going back to their earliest encounters, UT introduced faster strikes and more desperate/frantic attacks. I think without a character like Mankind the moves still could have been introduced but would have seemed out of place without some terrible force like MK pushing the UT into new tactics. The character of UT had been pushed to the limits before by Yokozuna, but didn't really need to change to come back and defeat Yoko. Mankind was a whole different kind of threat.

I think the significance of the Austin 3:16 promo is just revisionist history as usual with the WWE. It was a promo that caught people off-guard but it didn't catapult him into stardom. I feel like most fans know it took a bit until Austin really took off.

I was there live that night. My second ever show. It was the only wrestling show I ever went with my grandfather and father, I will hold that memory dear to my heart forever. I was the biggest HBK fan, i was decked out in his hat and gloves. I could not understand why he was getting booed at the time. Right before the three count in that match, you can audibly hear a young kid scream "NOOOOOO!!!!" That would be me at 9 years old. I was in tears the entire ride home. What a night.

If you have not subscribed to this channel then now is the time. This is the best wrestling channel on KZbin. No bias at all. Just straight facts. Tells it like it is. Shows it like it is. Always good quality stuff and always on time.

And what made him scarier is that he was moving a LOT faster and with more agility than prior incarnations of his character. There's just something unfair about someone his size moving fast enough to almost keep up with the cruiserweights.

I remember watching this and when The Rock first started in the WWE I honestly did not think his career would really go anywhere until he found what worked with him and then became The Rock. I was still watching a lot of wrestling especially the WWE. A great job on your bios that you put together!
