Faction: The Italian Army
The First World War
Conscription was introduced by the Italian government in 1907.
By 1912 the Italian army was 300,000 strong, but there was a shortage of experienced NCOs and trained officers.

Italians make a great deal of that bargain but the fact of the matter is that it was predicated on the Italians HELPING in the war. Operative word "helping." Not sure how any honest of history could look at the Italian effort in WWI and admit that it exactly qualifies. I mean sure, they killed a lot of their own people with stupid offensives into the mountains, but in what universe is losing repeatedly and embarrassingly against a nation that Russian divisions with only 1 rifle for every 3 men could soundly whip without assistance, "helping?" Italy was more trouble than it was worth in the war. It took diverting British and French divisions desperately needed to face the German buildup on the Western Front going down to Italy, a nation with an army 3 times Austria's by numbers, in order to get the Italian force to stop DESERTING ITS OWN TERRITORY IN THE FACE OF THE ENEMY. Bottom line, the Italian front was literally more trouble than it was worth and more of a drain on Allied resources than any other front but the West in the entire war..
@garn3590
@garn3590 6 жыл бұрын
man there were 3 french division, 2 british and 1 american, with more than 45 italian divisions, we sent 2 divisions to help at the central theater, they were not in any way consequential, most of the resources were from our own pocket and when it really mattered (piave) after caporetto, there were no non-italian division because the central command thought we would fall, we stood alone at the Piave and stopped both the austrian army and the german division they sent to help them, stop being an idiot

@Rickusty 7 жыл бұрын
the most important historical thing is missing: Austria-Hungary had a SIGNED pact with Italy that specified that they HAD to inform their italian allies for ANY war actions or preparation for war with any enemies. What did the Austrian did in 1914? They declared war on Serbia without informing Italy. Thus betraying the Alliance, and not complying with what they signed. Italy then, outraged and LEGALLY, destroyed the pact and went to war with them. And won.
@raffaeleirlanda6966
@raffaeleirlanda6966 6 жыл бұрын
Rickusty And also us italian as long as Austria conducted offensive war against Serbia and not defensive (being invaded first by someone else) then as long the war Austria declared was not under alliance rules, we asked them as reward the cities of Trieste, Trento and Gorizia to enter war their side. But Austria refused and English offered more, that's just why we entered war to figth Austria.

fun fact in world war two the Italian army had some very special positions, they could loose to the British in North Africa, loose to the French in the Alps, or step it up a notch and loose to the Ethiopians in Ethiopia.

I agree, I am Italian and surely he was a disgrace for our army. Fortunately he was replaced by the great wise and strategic Armando Diaz (a great man from Naples, also the city were I was born). We won and destroyed the Austro-Hungarian Empire in less than a year. Quite an epic and tragic story :(
