Restoration German Mauser 98K bayonet.
In this video I will show restoration and conservation of the WWII German K98 mauser bayonet. This bayonet has been in the ground for 77 years.

ВАРВАР...На ножнах было клеймо а он его срезал и остаток закрасил. Понятно что нож был ржавый но он его как антиквариат вообще уничтожил! И миру явилась немецкая "зубочистка".

Every step of your video I was saying to myself. "Oh no! That's not how I'd do it!", but your final results were quite nice. Not over-polished, which I think ruins relics and war mementos. All I would have done extra is cleaned the leather belt hanger with saddle soap and polished it up with mink oil and a soft cloth. Terrific job!

Das ist der große Nachteil von geschichtlichen Schrott, zum Wegwerfen zu schade und für die Sammlung zu schlecht erhalten. Für die Puristen die schon jammern wenn man einen Rostkrümmel entfernt, ist so ein Video natürlich nichts🙈🙉🙊. Ich würde mir aber lieber so ein gereinigtes, restauriert würde ich nicht behaupten, als geschichtliches Andenken in die Sammlung legen, als den Schrotthaufen. Wobei mir bewußt ist, dass die Scheide schon während dem Auftragen der Spachtelmasse weiterrostet, also mit dem Bajonett in der Scheide würde ich das Teil nicht lagern. So gereinigt würde mich das Stück wahrscheinlich überleben, aber ich bin ja schon alt. Als Resümee für mich, ein entspannendes Video. 👍👍👍👍

Do you also use oxalic acid to derust? If so, how long do you roughly leave your items in there for? ps. you live in heaven, the ground you live upon seems to be very gentle with these relics, here in the netherlands, relics will fall apart if you handle them a bit roughly...

In this video i used citric acid to remove rust. I only use oxalic acid when I need to keep the paint. The оxalic acid removes rust too slowly.

You should learn what you're doing before attempting such projects? Boiling in water then carding( with either degreased steel wool or carding wheel) to remove rust without destroying any original finish is the proper way to do this? The corrosion pits in your bayonet were so bad it was gone!

Interesting...you heated the oil to make a polymer barrier to prevent rust....this is done with cast iron skillets.

That bayonet was buried in some very clean, dry, and bacteria poor dirt. Compared to some of the other examples on the channel it looks factory fresh.

I like your workmanship, bu if you try to sell this bayonet in Europe after this restauration, you will be happy to get €60 for it. Unrestored and original you will get €90 to €100 for it. The metal scabbard has to be blued, not painted black. And if there are holes in the scabbard, that you've had to plaster, than you won't be able to sell it to anyone, period. The rule in Europe is: don't touch it. Leave it as it is. Freezeframe after wartime....

The bayonet is an early example, made in 1935. The blade is marked using the letter/number code used from 1934-1937 to keep the maker’s identities secret. The bayonet were made by E. & F. Horster & Co. of Solingen. Scabbard...it's hard to see the numbers

Don't quite get why one would "make" an anti-rust solution when you can buy them pre-made. Also.... Again not sure why you're gonna take a metal brush to a 77yr old knife. You coulda took a brillo pad or sanding pad after letting it soak without any chance of chipping or gouging the blade. But hey.... Just my observation.

I wouldn't sand it at all. Just put it in Evaporust for three days and the rust will be gone but the Surface will be all original.
