That judge needs to get fired and disbarred from ever practicing law indefinitely. It's inconceivable to even imagine a judge doing that to a child, especially after she apologizes to the judge for falling asleep in court. In the past, I have seen judges, attorneys and jurors fall asleep in court as court cases were taking place, but nobody ever were arrested for doing that. The 15 year old that got arrested for sleeping in court is the first time that I have heard that happen.

It wasn't school. It is a reachout type program. The kids plant trees and do other community projects. All volunteer. She has been homeless or couch surfing with her mother. She was tired. Her mother is doing her best and is saving up money. Then this happened. I've seen this judge many times. He's arrogant, but I never would have thought he would do something like this. He needs to be removed from the bench.

@ArtinaSinclair People forget the etiquette of the court.. No talking, no sleeping, no chewing gum, and no outburst. Her mother should have kept her out if she knew that she didn't provide her child with proper sleeping conditions. Judge King should have excused from his courtroom. Because I am not arguing with a child. The chaperone should have handled the situation initially before it escalated. Other students lost the opportunity to experience and learn from the field trip. Hopefully, the lawsuit will provide adequate living quarters for her family and set up a trust account for her daughter to get funds at a certain age.

If it were not for the cameras, we would not know about the story. We need to educate persist in force. All court rooms have cameras on at all times and be live streamed. That’s the only way will get accountability and it is all right is the people to know what is going on in our courts? They should not be held private they should not be kept from us and we shouldn’t have to wait months to get a video from body cameras, or anything else like that. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried, but it’s nearly impossible to get the camera footage from law enforcement, and it will cost you a pretty penny.

I’ve watched quite a few of this judges hearings in the law nerd community on KZbin and he is just always on a power trip. He is always more concerned with asserting his power than exercising judicial discretion and professionalism. I’ll tell you what. This poor teenager got bullied by a judge when she was tired because her family is without a home…The City of Detroit is ‘bouta pay for this BIG TIME.

No child should be placed in handcuffs except in extreme circumstances but it’s happening way too often. The judge who gave the unlawful order and the cop who acted on it, need to serve jail time for child abuse.

It's not quite stupidity; it's a lack of empathy, mindfulness, and an inability to see all human beings as equals with equal rights to due process. Some will argue that this is an inherent cultural and systemic issue with the criminal justice system. Regardless of the truth this judge suffers from all of these issues.

She was forced to be stripped search, put in a prison jumpsuit, and put in handcuffs. She was homeless and fell asleep twice in the courtroom when no trial was being held. A 15 year old homeless girl was treated like a criminal for falling asleep! What would you do if this was your daughter?

When a power monger goes too far, part of his punishment, in addition to a financial award, would be for another judge to treat him the same way he treated a 15 yo girl for falling asleep in his precious courtroom. The EXACT WAY he treated Eva. Then booted from his precious bench, permanently. What law makes falling asleep a crime? Who got hurt? He, the "judge," has a huge nasty ego tainted with racism.

He did. But the girl caused more trouble. There are simple rules for a reason. Courts have rules whether they are formally in session or not. The mom did great damage to the child by supporting her in feeling entitled and above the rules. At some point this will backfire. The girl encouraged to be above the rules will, at some point push some person or rule too far and end in tragedy. No wonder mental health problems are skyrocketing and the country is divided and experiencing increased crime. Encouraging behaviors like this are a loss for society and for the girl herself.

Ironically (unironically is more accurate) I'm not convinced that this will. This judge has a deep lack of empathy and understanding. It is far more likely (although I hope this doesn't happen) that he joins Steve Harvey and Bill Cosby on a speaking tour: everyone needs to pull up their pants, cut their hair, stop listening to music, and work hard... Yeah that will fix it.

This is especially since true when you consider the literal First amendment give civilians (the child) freedom of speech, and the right redress grievances to the government (the judge).
