Wynand Olivier - Better Than You Think

Wynand Olivier was underrated, there, I said it! He was often criticized for how he played within the Bulls' structures, but for the most part, a lot of the criticism was unfounded.
He ran very straight, had deceptive speed and scored some brilliant tries on top of the tries he created for players outside of him.
He was behind Jean De Villiers in the national pecking order and although he did earn some Springbok caps, his domestic form never really translated into International success.

Meisiekind - not the flashiest of centres in terms of offloads or steps, but he ran great lines off the ball which meant that he could find space in the compact defence near the opposition tryline. If I recall correctly he got man of the match in the third test against England in 2012.

@@achilles8397 You know, I've always resented Peter De Villiers for opting for AD Jacobs over this man. Let's not go down a weird road here but that was when it became very clear that he inherited a good core and failed to add on to it. He and (mostly) the staff at least nursed it enough to stay together (Don't let my phrasing allow my whole sentiment to sound like a praise for the man, because it's not meant to be one). Wynand Olivier was definitely underused in Test rugby. It's not even "enough" to say "Hey, at least he got a call up" when he didn't even have a position to fight for. Or the opportunity to earn his slot, I hope that tracks.

@@tumelo4526 honestly spot on comment. Jacobs wasn't anywhere near Olivier in consistency and impact. There were very moments in his career I ever felt like he wasn't contributing to the team and when he wasn't playing we definitely missed him. I feel bad for players like him, Schalk Brits, Warren Whiteley and a bunch of others. Olivier definitely deserved more time in the green and gold Jersey.

Your are spot on! I am having fit thinking about him , Vermaak, whiteley and others that could have been long term pieces in the team's core. I am a bit salty now because I can remember a time where John Smit vacated hooker for the boiling Bismarck, meaning that spot on the bench could have been a great place for Brits ! I may be wrong but I think ChilliBoy was starting to lose a gear and Adriaan Strauss may have been struggling with injuries between 2009-2010 but I stand to be corrected. So much talent being lost in the vain of politics 😣. . I do feel like "at least they got to play rugby at a level most would only be able to dream of" but man, I really feel for them.
