@@nolanventures473 I'm in SE WY, so we've got the Snowy Range, which are beautiful, but inundated with green plates. We're hoping to be in Sheridan within the next few years.

Excellent intro to the Big Horns and the Cloud Peak Wilderness. The views are similar to the Winds IMO. Both are on my list for the summer of 2021. Thanks for the vicarious visit!

some of our family is going to do this hike in a few weeks...they say they are camping at Misty Moon (7 miles) the 1st night, then going to summit (6 miles) and back to Misty Moon the next day.....does that sound right??..looks a little longer in the video, which by the way, was awesome!!
@nolanventures473

Mileage sounds right. The second day does not compare to the first day. The first 8-9 miles are uphill but easy. After that the miles are tough. Also be sure they are good at route finding. No trail after about 10ish miles.

Great video! Headed here in a few weeks, wondering what, if any, precautions you took for bears. Thanks!

Bears are not a huge issue in the bighorns. No grizz in theory…just black bears. Proper food storage is always a must.

This video is great info for planning my trip. Two questions.. What time of year(specifically)was this video taken and is there back country camp permits or any permits required? Thanks!
@nolanventures473
@nolanventures473 2 жыл бұрын
This was mid July. Maybe the 17th. This is a wilderness area so no permits to apply for or reserve. You do need to fill one out at the trailhead…but it is free. No camp fires above I think 9,100 feet. But that info is at the trailhead. Happy trails.

@@nolanventures473 Awesome thank you.. We are looking at going 3rd week of Aug. Here in Colorado it seems like everywhere requires some sort of permit, fee or something so appreciate the info!

I've hiked this area a bunch. How far from the summit did you get? I was within 1/4 mile of the summit in 2017 and just ran out of daylight. I did a lot of searching for paths through the boulder fields and wound up doing a bunch of backtracking. Going after the summit again in 3 weeks. I'm lucky in that I only live 3 hours from the trailhead.

We did summit Cloud Peak in 2018. This year we had an issue with our water filter that stopped working. So we called it quits just before the knife’s edge. I would say a bit over half a mile short. There is no trail at all once you get to the point where we stopped this year. We had to backtrack as well a few times when we did summit in 18. Stay as far left as you can to get to the knife’s edge. It is a very narrow part that you have to go through. Once you pass the edge...you head straight for a bit then swing up and left. It is difficult because the boulders are so big you can’t see the summit. Just hit and miss as you go. Good luck and stay safe. Those boulders are no joke up there. We live about 3 hours away from the trailhead as well. Love being so close. Enjoy!

@@nolanventures473 Are there a few front country campgrounds you would recommend near the West Tensleep area? We'd be tent camping. Or even better if you mind commenting on dispersed camping options.

Planning on this trip in a week. Past the 3 lakes on 63 and then hopefully to Cloud Peak( if we go the right way?) Is 27 miles round-trip the correct mileage? Thanks for the video. Fantastic views and scenery.

We did it in about 26 miles. A bit of route finding the last three - four miles to close peak is needed. Enjoy and good luck!

The 7 Black is our first GoPro. We have done some research on settings and it can do amazing stuff once you learn them. And I think they are pretty simple to learn compared to conventional cameras.

Park at the West Tensleep Trailhead and there are two parking areas. One for day use and one for overnight and multi-day excursions. It’s clearly marked and if I recall it’s the parking area further from the lake. Just be sure to park in the correct area and you will be fine for multi-day use. Parking is limited so arrive early if you can - but it’s usually not too bad.
