Wow Robert I so enjoyed this video. So sad about the graffiti and the closings albeit understandable under the circumstances. I know I can come to your channel for beautiful scenery, history and music so thank you for that. I look forward to your next video on the outdoor church. So good too to see you and Mel having marvelous adventures in spite of the high gas prices.

The fuel prices are definitely a factor, but we are trying to plan trips carefully so we can still make it out for some adventures in this region. In previous summers I have often traveled quite extensively, but trying to find interesting spots closer to home base this year.

It seems like I heard something about construction work over the summer, but I don't remember the details off the top of my head. I had been up in the Bighorns many times over the years, but had never seen Crazy Woman Canyon. A couple of my sons mentioned taking a day trip up there so we decided to check it out ourselves finally.

That crazy woman Pioneer story is remarkable as it was depicted in the 1970s movie “Jeremiah Johnson” starring Robert Redford. If you haven’t seen that movie, you should check it out. It is one of my all time favorites!

One of the coolest parts of that canyon is near the end where the creek suddenly disappears and goes underground. Then it comes back out further down stream at about half the capacity. It didn't used to do that 30 years ago when I would go there. That was always a great place to go fishing if you were feeling kind of lazy since you could drive along until you found a nice hole to try out.

I'm a local from Buffalo. 42 years resident. The Forrest Service won't close Crazy Woman canyon. Because local ranchers use it to get to their summer range in the Southern Big Horns. The road on the bottom going to the canyon is Johnson County road. Then Forrest Service road. The locals believe the name came from the first story. The lady lost her family and the Native Americans didn't want anything to do with her because she didn't act right. The North Fork of Crazy Woman creek starts up on Sheep mountain road. By Powder River pass. Unfortunately kids spray painted that stuff. Locals have been known to collect the bat poop for fertilizer. Don't think to many do that anymore though. The campground in the canyon was closed because the Forrest Service didn't want to maintain it anymore. There's lots of campgrounds and camping places throughout the mountains. If you want a spot in the summer in a campground my advice get there earlier. Don't wait until late afternoon. They will be full. If anyone needs help or has a question i would gladly help. Great job on the video! Its always interesting to see how others see my area. 😊

My wife and I went to the West Tensleep Lake campground this past summer. We were towing a 28 ft travel trailer. You are not going to believe this: Google maps told us to turn 2 exits from where we were going. I thought that it was strange, since we were almost 40 miles from the campground. Guess what? It routed us through Crazy Woman Canyon!! As soon as we exited the interstate, I noticed we got on a dirt road. I thought it was strange, but kept going. About 7 miles in, we see a big yellow sign that says NO RV's or Big Trucks. I thought Oh Well, we went this far, let's keep going. The biggest mistake I ever made towing an RV!! We pulled our 28 Ft RV through this canyon. I didn't think we would make it. Then coming the opposite direction were a couple of cars. They had to pull over and we didn't think either of us would be able to pass, but we did. I'll never do that again. In fact, we got rid of our RV when our vacation was over. That trip through the canyon almost made me sick. Plus, we busted our TV antenna on a rock outcrop. I thought if we can't get out of here, we are screwed. We made a big mistake by using Google Maps. I should have known better. Thank God we were able to get out of there with our RV. I told our camp host at West Tensleep Lake Campground what we did. She couldn't believe we made it through there with the size of RV we had. I should have turned around when we saw the sign. I heard an 18 wheeler tried to make it through there this past year. They said it had to be cut up to get it out of there.

Wow! I do recall some pretty tight spots along that road. Google Maps has definitely caused me some grief over the years. I'm becoming increasingly skeptical of GPS directions in general just because of this sort of thing. It's like they are right just often enough to keep our confidence for the next time... LOL

Okay Robert, that place is truly amazing! Also, the story of how it may have been named "Crazy Women Canyon" was interesting too. Too bad about the graffiti, but it's an inherited trait I guess. Seems like it's been around an awful long time. Maybe someday kids will learn a new way to impress their peers. Hopefully one less destructive. Your photography is fit for a photo exhibition. You should frame some up and sell them.
