Rough-turning bowls is one of Sam's favorite approaches in woodturning. He rough-turns a nice piece of Koa wood to about 7/8" wall thickness-he then shows how he dries the bowl blank by storing it in shavings within a paper bag. Thanks to the viewer who sent me this lovely piece of wood,

Great process for turning a green work piece. Well described. Those pieces should be beautiful when finish turned. Will be looking forward to seeing them in a future session.

Koa is my favorite wood. I was lucky enough to bring home a few pieces on my last trip to Hawaii before it was places on the CITES list. Now, it's damn near impossible.

Thanks for showing the process. I've been thinking about making a kiln. Which way do you think is better drying a bowl the way you do or a kiln? Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!

Looking forward to see what these blanks become. Koa is a very pretty wood. A question: Would the McNaughton (or any other) coring system be capable of coring a dry maple burl? I've seen burl turning blanks for sale, but at a very high price; it would be a shame to turn away most of such a blank if it could be cored into one or more additional blanks. However, not sure if the hardness of the dry burl would lend itself to coring.

Thank you Sam. Q: when getting uniform wall thickness for twice turned bowls, do you factor in the tenon thickness as part of the uniform wall thickness or do you allow the bottom to be thicker than the wall thickness?
