‘Wyrd Sisters’ - Book Review - Friday Fantasy Show - Episode 199.
The Bottled Imp continues our exploration of the Discworld universe with the ‘Wyrd Sisters’ written by Sir Terry Pratchett. First published in 1987.
I was about 15 or 16 when I first read ‘The Colour of Magic’, book 1 of the Discworld series. I remember seeing the colourful, cartoon cover on the shelves of Forbidden Planet in London and thinking, “That looks like the book for me!” And I was right. By then a number of books in the Discworld series were published so I soon devoured the rest of them. I must have read the first 10 or so back-to-back. But then I’m not sure what happened. I stopped reading them and lost touch with the entire goings on in the Pratchett universe.
‘Wyrd Sisters’ is the sixth novel in the series and explores the nature of witches, how wicked Dukes and Duchesses can be, and the thorny issue of who should rule the land. Turns out witches are not by nature gregarious, and they certainly don’t have leaders. ‘Wyrd Sisters’ sees the return of Granny Weatherwax, a formidable witch whom pretty much everyone is scared of. Joining her is Nanny Ogg, owner of the most evil cat in the world, and Margrat Garlick, a junior witch who believes in occult jewellery, covens, and bubbling cauldrons. All three witches certainly wouldn’t dream of interfering in royal politics. Would they? Would they?
The first book in the Discworld series, ‘The Colour of Magic’, has a direct sequel, ‘The Light Fantastic’. As far as I know (not read them all yet!) all the other novels are stand alone. The premise of all the Discworld novels is as follows. A planet-sized flat disc carried through space on the backs of four huge elephants - Berilia, Tubul, Great T'Phon and Jerakeen - who themselves stand on the shell of Great A'Tuin, a gigantic sea turtle. The surface of the disc contains oceans and continents, and with them, civilisations, cities, forests and mountains.
