As a Designer & Home Stager, it pains me to hear someone talk about "heirloom quality furniture". That doesn't exist anymore. The last time that existed was around 100 years ago (with the very few exceptions being farmhouse style and Mid-Century and even those took 50+ years to come back into style again). Since then, styles have changed so quickly and so dramatically that children don't want their parents' old, oversized, overstuffed, faux-antique-looking stuff that was mass-produced to look custom but really isn't. "Boomers" are having to throw away or donate their "heirloom quality" furniture because no one wants it. I grew up in a Mennonite-heavy area and can see why that mentality would obviously not be able to keep up with market changes or understand how flexibility in business is important because as a group, their ideology is very rigid because it's essentially the same worldview for the last 100 years or more. How can you say you know what Millennials value when you don't even watch movies or TV?! First rule of marketing "Understand your client/audience"!!!

@sisyphushappyxvx4 жыл бұрын
@NukaColaQT I agree with much of what you said, but I'll push back on the notion that heirloom quality furniture doesn't exist or hasn't for years. As a furniture maker myself, I can tell you the issue is purely economical; furniture makers are making heirloom furniture, but 1.) they can't sustain a living as a furniture maker because no one is able/willing to pay commensurate with the skill/labor of the craftsperson, and 2.) consumers can't afford heirloom quality anymore in a market flooded with particleboard nonsense that is designed for obsolescence. There are makers making heirloom quality furniture (Phillip Morley, Nancy Hiller, Jory Brigham, etc.), but most Millenials saddled with loan debt and probably sharing a a living space to cover basic needs don't have $6,000 for a rocking chair and most Boomers bought heirloom furniture 40 years ago and it's still holding up. Also, IT SHOULDN'T COST $6,000, but the market means woodworkers can't sustain a living otherwise. It's kinda lose-lose.
@PaxPixie4 жыл бұрын
@@sisyphushappyxvx That's actually not what I meant. I know good quality furniture exists, however, because styles change so frequently and living spaces are no longer nearly as permanent as they used to be, we should no longer think of furniture as something that will be passed down generationally. There's a reason why the majority of furniture is designed for obscolescense now. It's affordable. Why would I pay a fortune for a piece of furniture that will outlast me but my kids will donate when I'm gone? I guess what I meant is the term "heirloom quality furniture" is basically obsolete. We all would love pieces that last a lifetime, but that's just not in the cards for most people under the age of 50.

Interested to see where this goes, but that catalog pretty much showed exactly where Keystone's current problem lies...too many designs, too much inventory, not enough demand. I'm really wondering which designs in that catalog have sold more than 5 units over the past 10 years. Just in the idea of legs...if you have to order 20 units just to make it economical, then that's your 5 tables right there...if you only sold one of those tables, you have effectively 4 unsold tables just sitting. Designer space is going to be key here, being able to offer a wider variety of woods, being able to on-demand turnings rather than having to keep such a large stock available, and being able to better fine tune the inventory. When I saw those shelves, I didn't see inventory...I saw wasted space. That space could be better suited with more equipment, craftsmen, etc. Each of those boxes looked like they held roughly 40-60 of any given turning, depending on the use of said turning (let's just average 2-4 used per product), that's between 10 and 30 unsold units of product PER BOX. This merger is going to really help Keystone out, and honestly if they can get away from the retailer market and get closer with direct sales...they're going to see a boom. They have the production volume and ability to produce high quality product, while also keep costs down, just as you guys said they really need to be in the right market (also, the whole boomer vs. millennial attitude needs to go...it's not a matter of appreciation or want, but rather accessibility that is creating less demand among younger customers...I'd love to furnish a place with high quality, heirloom tier furniture that could be passed down within the family, but the reality for a lot of people is that they don't even know if they'll be in the same place 6 months from now let alone several years due to being at the mercy of an apartment lease/rent agreement). Here's hoping this is fruitful for everyone involved.

It took me two and a half years to save up $230 to buy a new chair. If my cats had to go to the vet for something, or one of my parents lost their job, or the car needed a repair that wasn't covered by the warranty, or a pipe burst over the winter, or anything else, and I would have had to start over. No one else is breaking even, which isn't uncommon for Millennials. If I want good furniture, I'd have to get a second job, and that's not exactly easy to do, both for the obvious reasons of 'the job market sucks' and for more deep-seated reasons of 'chronic stress and depression combined with a complete lack of heath checkups since an early age has damaged my body and mind in a thousand different ways that make keeping it functioning that much more time consuming, and make it that much less capable to take on the extra strain of a second job' On top of that, what I did with the Stimulus check's a great indicator of what'd happen to a second job's money - it went into savings, so that if I get sick, injured, etc, I won't end up financially ruined for 9+ months because I missed 3 days of work. I'm hoping this merger will go well for everyone, it sounds promising. I know people aren't happy with the millennial comment and being in that actual age bracket I sort of cringed myself. There is some truth to it though, not about not wanting that quality of furniture but the type of furniture they're selling. Like, when they were flipping through the catalog I saw some pieces that were clearly meant for a full dining room. Like old school, full dining room with a wood cabinet for your good china sort of deal. Even if I could afford that, I wouldn't get that. Like even the idea of owning a house that could have it's own dining room sounds too much to me. As my mother once commented, millennials are far more practical. And I think that's the other thing that's happening, we don't own it because it's part of being an adult and owning a home, we own either because we really want it or because it's something we need. Like no one talks about it, but some of these furniture pieces were the 'adult' thing to own.

I know nothing of this business but their situation REALLY does not seem feasible in the 21st century. I feel like cutting a few of their design options to combat choice-paralysis and, like they said, instead focus a bit more on the "designer image" could help them a lot. Most people don't have neither the money nor the time to buy furniture the way they're selling them anymore, you can blame the 1% for that (not the struggling millennials). Pretty much the only market that works the same way they do are rich people, people who specifically want nice designer stuff.

Being able to see value in heirloom quality furniture requires the ability to buy a house. And not only to buy a house but to also have disposable income while paying it off. For a very large percentage of millennials there’s no point in buying a beautiful, well crafted heirloom quality piece or furniture if we’re going to have to figure out how to move it into and out of apartments ever year or so. Or when there’s no way to justify that $1,000+ not going to student loan debt. Wyrmwood would likely a very similar issue as Keystone if they only sold the gaming tables. But, even though their products are still considered high end, they have a range of price points. If you can’t afford a gaming table but still want to get something from Wyrmwood you can still get a dice tray.

Especially while away from your own shop!!! Like their own workshop is a bit like your own house, if one person gets it there's a decent risk you'll get it if they work there a few days mask or no mask. But when visiting someone else?? That shit's dangerous, hope no one caught anything :(

Agreed! The pandemic isn't over just because you want it to be. Masks should be mandatory whenever you're in public and not able to practice social distancing.

Agreed and it's baffling that some had cloth face coverings of one form or another, but then took then down when around others, which is the most important time to wear them!

Luckily, we just shrug and say "whatever" (and we've had the same things before), while millennials actively get vocal and offended. Because we make so little noise, we don't get noticed as much anymore.

I hope this season turns into watching Doug and the crew work with Keystone to overhaul how they are doing things. As a small business owner, I'm fascinated and impressed with they way Wormwood has grown but the planning and discussion around that growth has been hard to see. I would love to watch those guys talk out how their merger might change things for both parties. Don't pull punches Doug!

Random question... if they do follow through with this merger, what will they be called? Keystone has the heritage, but Wyrmwood has the customer base. Wyrmstone? Stonewood? Keywyrm?

Fascinating. I really love the thought of Wyrmwood selling home furnishings. Combining the customer demand with an existing operations certainly can lead to a faster execution although I do wonder if commercial space isn't getting much cheaper due to covid work from home trends. That said what is perhaps more significant than space is the wood crafting talent this family might be offering. Existing relationships to retail stores may actually hurt the margins as suggested so it will be interesting to see a phase out to direct Kickstarter or website sales. Perhaps the expanded sales may allow little change to overall staffing. Seems like you have some industrial engineering problems to resolve. Best of luck.

I would not say it's people not valuing heirloom quality furniture it's the fact that our culture has changed where people move a lot more. I'd love to have a $2000 gaming table but I've moved 3 times in the last 4 years totaling around 16,000 miles. I am not gonna put heirloom quality furniture through that. To me I VALUE it too much to put furniture of that quality through that torture.

Our parents generation had a ton of disposable wealth to go through, we have essentially none. One day I hope to buy some nice furniture, but it wont be any day soon.

I will say, the Keystone dude is correct when he stated that the market has shifted. It used to be that everyone could invest in a high-quality table. Millenials are interested....but either don't have the funds or expect that they'll have to move. I graduated uni 8 years ago, and I'd say 50-67% of my friends are still renting and wouldn't consider getting furniture that couldn't be disassembled for a move, or would be heartbroken if it got damaged or had to be left behind. When you're shifting tons of inventory, Keystone's stock method makes sense. When you're doing one-of's all the time, making everything to order like Wyrmwood makes sense. It sounds like Keystone's now halfway between, and some stock's sitting for years. At the moment, they need a smaller, single-man-move transport carts. Their current ones are basically two-man moving jobs, which only makes sense if you've got two guys manning inventory all the time. And then they need to convert every part that hasn't had an order in 4-6 months into a "made to order" part *winks at Wyrmwood*. If I'm picking out my wood, my legs, my 'xyz options', then I'm fine waiting an extra week or two to have those parts made.
