The issue of the millennial discussion is saying they don’t VALUE heirloom furniture. If you said they don’t PRIORITIZE heirloom furniture then you’d be mostly correct. I’d love to have high quality furniture, but with limited funds I have to prioritize the things I’m using 8-12 hours a day vs once a week.
@j.d.35974 жыл бұрын
100% this! I would LOVE to have sturdy heirloom furniture. But I need to prioritize what I use EVERY DAY. I use my phone countless times a day, I use my computer multiple times a day. I sit in a chair in my apartment...once a week? If I'm not working then I'm either sleeping or decompressing by playing a game. Unfortunately, my apartment is not where I play tabletop games (unless it's online, but I have a nice office chair that I spent good money on for that). I play tabletop games at a boardgame cafe or at my singular friend who has space for a dining room table and chairs.
@perfectlyhopeless4 жыл бұрын
Exactly! And, like, even the things I use on the regular I have to seek out the cheapest options. Getting clothes from goodwill, scavenging for coupons to get maybe 20% off at a retail store, even going to Habitat ReStore for the vast majority of my furniture. I don't have the privilege of money to support businesses like these just in general
@Elyeras4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for putting this into words that aren’t just frustration at them. My phone or computer are tools I use for work for communication and are basically necessities. I feel like they don’t sit in the same category as something like choices of furniture or clothing brands. Like if I had a 1000$ Gucci bag on making that argument hell yeah your right but today you can get a 900$ phone for 30$ a month. You aren’t required to upfront that anymore like you would with a piece of furniture.
@Cthalupa4 жыл бұрын
There's nothing special about financing a phone that doesn't apply to financing other purchases. If you're on the iPhone upgrade program you're paying interest to Citizen's Bank at rates similar to most credit cards. You could put furniture on a credit card, or take out a personal loan if a fixed monthly payment is also acceptable. I'm not saying you should go finance a table - just that it's really not any different in practice than financing a phone.

I think it's more "Do you buy a flagship $1000 phone and some cheap ikea furniture" or "Do you buy a cheap sub-$200 Android and some fancy heirloom furniture" What do you value more? I know what I value more. The phone with the nice, hi-res crisp screen, that's fast af and has a battery that lasts all day and can be wirelessly charged to 80% in half an hour. If you'd ask a Boomer, they'd go with the cheap phone and value the furniture far more. Both the cheap and expensive phone have the same capabilities. Twitter, KZbin, Facebook, Banking, Browsing. They can all do it. Both the cheap Ikea and fancy heirloom furniture have the same capabilities. Where do you want to spend more money? For us, answer's probably gonna be the phone. Or a fast, thin, sleek computer. We could do all the same stuff on a cheap Acer, but it's not as pleasant. Same as sitting on cheap Ikea furniture isn't as pleasant as sitting on a Chesterfield. Justifying costs for technology is easier when you need it vs a Chair you don't technically need. All in all I'm more likely to drop the money for technology than the Chair due to it's uses. I'm an X'er, so have an Opinion on who appreciates heirloom furniture: everyone. We all want something nice. In the last 40 years it's increasingly harder to acquire when you're young due to changes in financial life. But also, people are more mobile. Fewer people live in one place more than 5 years; things have to be packable/portable. It can be cheaper to toss out a fiberboard coffee table than move it. Maybe this will bring back some willingness to hold on to bigger pieces.

Honestly im not a huge fan of the custom engraving idea, but mainly because it feels like something where, if I bought it with an engraving of my parties name, my name, or something cool sounding, 1-2 years down the road my opinion can change about it, and what was once great little detail, turns into "why did I decide to do this?" If I can make a counterpoint, because I'm not an expert on these things, i've always loved the elvish engravings, because they look cool and it can be your own little hidden message, but in general it doesn't matter what it says because it makes whatever it's engraved on look "mystical" or "mysterious," so it doesn't nessessarily matter what it's meant to say. What I'm trying to say here is if you decide to do custom engraving for the Kickstarter, give people the option to have the engraving in elvish, because at the end of the day it just makes shit look cool.

I would propose from least to most expensive 1. Just the natural beauty of the wood, 2. Wyrmwood designs stock engraving (choice of 3-4 designs, more image based) 3. Man I've never had so many thoughts about a Wyrm Lyfe episode! Firstly, I'd love five episodes a week but it's too much for the amount of media crew (though three would be lovely). Secondly, I think everyone involved in the millennial discussion (except maybe Kelli) doesn't understand our demographic very well. Doug, with all due respect man, we don't own expensive phones and computers because we chose those over nice furniture. Modern life necessitates those purchases simply to live and to work in modern society. If our grandparents lived and worked today they would also purchase a computer before a table simply out of modern necessity. But also we don't own homes at nearly the same rate, so every time we move we have to move a large, expensive, and clunky object. The thought of trying to disassemble, move, and protect a prophecy table has been the second biggest deterrent to buying one after the initial cost (third being floor space). I get what y'all are trying to say and, to a minor degree, it's not wrong, but at the same time you're missing the bigger understanding of the millennial lifestyle. Love your company and everything you are doing, just saying, I think you wildly missed the mark on millennials.

I would like to make a suggestion as to what Doug said about his goal for Wyrmlyfe (I have 0 XP in this field so please assume I am talking out of my behind for a moment, gonna also try to keep it G-rated for any Keystone folks reading this. Hi!) I personally, while I would love five episodes per week, think the golden number is three 15-20 minute episodes a week IF possible. Since you guys all have a lot of projects and goals flying around in the air right now I would think that having one episode being with Wyrmwood PA and another one being at Wyrmwood Mass., the third could be about the other projects going on. Or even the random conversations and clips that wouldn’t normally fit in a Wyrmlyfe episode. Maybe another debate on how read percentile dice?

Super stoked for the future of your company! Very excited for all of the plans and expansions. There are great plans in place and I can’t wait to see where you guys take this company. Five videos a week sounds great, Wrymlyfe is my #1 KZbin video I look forward to. I would rather have less videos with better/more content than flood my feed with videos that aren’t true to what I know Wrymlyfe to be. Keep up the amazing work!

What I love about woodworking, and watching your videos, is the escapism and creation from nothing. It gives a brief pause in time where you can take pride in creating something when your life is falling down around you. Others may see it as a waste of time, but even planning something can make the shadows disappear for awhile. Keep up the great work Wyrmwood and Keystone.

Millennial here, they hit on a key point: buying power. We flat out cannot afford heirloom furniture because of all the costs of living we are dealing with. And we especially cannot afford a single purpose item like furniture which is going to be in our apartments (because we have long ago given up on owning homes) that we're never in because we all work way too much.

These videos talking about process and this potential acquisition have been fascinating to watch. The discussion about shifting “American Dream” was an interesting bit. I offer this; millennials want value-added things. Wyrmwood’s beautiful tables serve multiple purposes. It’s a table that’s a showroom piece, a gaming surface, a storage space. The ability to have multi purpose furniture I think is why I have been so attracted to this low cost concept. It’s something that I could potentially afford that isn’t just a table. It’s a table that can be configured to be a nice centerpiece of furniture in a room with company over. However it also acts as storage, and a platform to play all sorts of games on. That value of multi purpose use is why I’m so eager to see what you guys have in store. That and all the little QOL addons.

Out of curiosity (and honestly wanting to score some of the quality wood) what happens to the wood from the prototypes or mess ups from the production process? I remember watching a video where you threw away a ton of product due to manufacturing errors. As someone who likes to reuse what may just be trash to another person, where does that wood go? Love the videos and the products you all put out. Keep up the great work.

I'm not mad at you guys, but comparing a laptop or a smart phone, things which enable us to find jobs, educate ourselves, pay our bills, access necessary services, communicate with our loved ones, and access almost every other thing we need, to a single piece of furniture (because let's be real, the Oracle is easily more expensive than most smart phones and laptops), isn't really honest. As far as game consoles and whatnot, my dad was able to buy nice furniture and still get all the latest game consoles and televisions. He was able to hold a government job for decades, he was able to buy a brand new home for our family on a single income early on, for a fraction of what homes cost now, and then sell that home years later, at the height of the housing bubble. I am now the age he was when he bought our first home and I just bought my first wooden bed, only the second bed I've ever purchased, and even that is only because my husband has been very lucky in finding work (plus he is an amazing worker, but that hasn't stopped him from narrowly escaping disaster several times). It's ok to kid, I think most millenials have thicker skin than people think. But you should realize, for the benefit of your business, that if millenials didn't value quality furniture, they wouldn't be watching your vlog. We are just dreaming of the day that we can afford a quality piece, maybe an heirloom we can pass on, something we can be proud of. I have bought a couple of small items for friends, but there are a lot of things I have to do before I can purchase a thousands-dollar table, not to mention the chairs. I have student loans, a too-small emergency fund, healthcare bills, etc. Understand your audience better, and you'll continue to have loyal fans who will remember your integrity.

When considering wyrmlyfe 5x a week, I think 3 vlogs of the current style and 2 production stylized videos would be nice. That coffee table was so cute! It’s a great kids dining table too FYI... especially with tiny chairs....

They have to choose between a phone and a table. They use the phone all the time, the table not so much. They can still value the expensive furniture, but being able to communicate is more important. Their grandparents didn't have that option

1. I think gem inlays or resin filled engravings have the potential to be awesome and should be considered. 2. I personally wouldn’t want an engraving or inlay. It’s a big commitment to put something on a piece of furniture that you’re going to keep forever/pass down to your kids. I understand that some people might want it, but as a wood worker, I wouldn’t spend extra money on it.

Would keystone support the Trevor Project? I don’t want to assume good or bad about them but where my money goes is important. My questions come down to who does Keystone support? How do they feel about the LGBTQ+ community? How do they feel about BLM? Are they pro life or pro choice? How do they feel about birth control? Who do they support monetarily? Who does their church support? Wyrmwood has shown ideals that ally with the LGBTQ+ community. I am a major advocate for all of your kickstarters, your merch, and we have been saving for a table. I do this because I believed your ideals aligned with mine. Your products are impeccable. I’m sure keystone is the same. That is not what I am worried about here. I want to know their values.

"...as they're typing it on a $1k-$2k computer" Joke's on you. My pc was $380, and my phone was $110. And again, the cost of the table is not just the table. Most millennials live in very small spaces. I don't have room for a large, nice table. I'd have to move someplace bigger if I wanted a nice table, and that'd increase my rent. It'd probably cost me about $400/month (~half my rent) in additional rent for a dining room, and most of my friends are in similar spots.

Could this furniture have optional modular components just like all the gaming furniture? Then a Wyrmwood Home portfolio would be totally backward compatible with all other Wyrmwood products. This could also simplify development because everything is simple, scalable, and modular. This could even open the door for open source furniture component development from independent craftspeople. (effectively managing furniture development like software development)

So in on the coffee table though id skip the engraving. However stackable stools for our tiny millennial appartments would be an amazing stretch goal. Also you might want to check the difference between "appreciate" and "prioritize". ;)

@PaxPixie4 жыл бұрын
The walkthrough of the merger was very interesting and appreciated. That said, between this episode and the previous one, I'm beginning to think there's still a disconnect between Wyrmwood management and their customer base/audience. It's not about value, it's about priorities. I highly value good quality furniture, but furniture (no matter what the quality) isn't going to A) keep me connected with my friends and family around the country or world and B) help me maintain my income by keeping me connected to my business. Unfortunately, due to income levels, debt levels, and many other factors, it isn't a question of "iPhone or table". It's a question of "table or one month's rent" or "table or 3 months car payment", or "table or the vacation I've been saving up for for 5 years to be able to afford". Those are the decisions we have to make. It feels like you're belittling those choices when you try to shame people for owning a phone or pc versus dining furniture. I'm not trying to complain about Wyrmwood. I love your inclusivity and your products. I just wanted to try to shine a light on how your comments and statements are being perceived.
@Fsudryden4 жыл бұрын
A good piece of furniture may last you a decade or two. How long does a phone last you or a computer last you before you have to replace it. So in the lifetime of the furniture you would have spent quadruple the amount on phone/laptop/computers. Where as you pay hopefully one time for decent furniture that last lasts you a very long time.
@troysteinmetz50194 жыл бұрын
I don't think making the observation that people prioritize other things (phone, laptop, vacations) is an any way negative judgment or "belittling." It's just saying that the needs and aspirations of this generation have changed, and that businesses need to adapt to fit them. Obviously, Wyrmwood thinks millennials value high-quality furniture enough, or else they wouldn't be making more cost-accessible gaming tables and coffee tables. It's just that things like heirloom-quality chairs, no matter how desirable, are lower on the list.
@Phoenix22154 жыл бұрын
They weren't trying to shame anyone, they were just pointing out a change in the market based on generational buying. There's no reason to take it as a personal attack.

problem is that wouldn't really be viable due to the real world not being minecraft, and trees not growing that quickly. If they offer a coffee table, we would totally think about buying that and if we could add on some stools/ottomans that would nest underneath that you could pull out for extra seats, footrests during coffee table mode, and maybe additional storage for games. and we could get in matching wood, that would be AMAZING!
