Wyze Cam 2 Review 1080P WiFi Security Camera - Unboxing, Setup, Settings, Footage

Today, I'm going to show you the upgraded Wyze cam version 2. I reviewed the original one a while back and now they released their second version with software and hardware enhancements. The price of this WiFi security camera is around $26 bucks for a 1080p camera which I think is one the cheapest WiFi camera around. So, will check out the features first then show you the updates that Wyze did to this second version of their camera.

First.. this is a 1080p camera recording at 15 frames per second, it has a 110° field of view and has 8 times digital zoom, it has 2 way audio, motion detection with push notifications to your smart phone or tablet when it senses motion, it has night vision with 4 infrared LEDs at 850 NM and with an IR cut filter. It has both local storage for your videos using a micro SD card and supports up to 32 GB or you can choose the free 14 day rolling cloud storage for your alert videos. It has an operating temperature of 32° to 104° F.
The differences as per Wyze is the motion tagging which detects and highlights motion captured.
There is also improved image quality due to a new CMOS sensor
The version 2 also has better sound as compared to the version 1.
and it has a matte finish as compared to the glossy finish on the older one.
What Wyze didn't mention is that the version 1 only records at 10 fps and the version 2 is now 15 fps.
Then we have the Infrared LEDS which the Version 1 only has 2 and the new version has 4. I'll show you later on what can 2 extra LEDs can do to your footage.

I purchased 4 Wyze Cams over the past several months. In that time, one of the cameras lost its IR capability and none of their mic talk functions ever worked. When I contacted support for the IR issue, it took a week for support to respond and then only to tell me what I needed to do to troubleshoot their problem camera....and it was a lot of crap to go through just to troubleshoot something that should have worked longer than a few weeks. I didn't feel that I should have to deal with that so I asked for a swap of a new camera, but again, I would have to jump through hoops to make that happen. I make decent money as a business analyst and considering the time and effort it would take me to fulfill that request, along with the cheap price of the camera, it wasn't a cost effective swap for me. There were other issues such as frequent audio blanks in addition to obvious omissions of things the cameras should have recorded like deliveries being made at my front door. In my opinion they rolled out this product before vetting all of the basic functionality which would explain why many many other Wyze Cam owners are having the same issues. The upside to this product is the function over cost. I consider these disposable products and do not recommend them in critical areas as it isn't a reliable product...short or long term. Spend more money for a reliable product and peace of mind....

I'm based in the UK and when trying to buy this camera it always goes to the NEOS camera ... which is basically the same camera ... however, the software is vastly different!! A lot of the software features shown are NOT available on the NEOS camera. It is a shame really because it is a very good camera for a very good price. Neos seems to want to turn it into a subscription based thing. Thanks for the review, I wish I could make it work with the Wyze software.

Do you have to store the clips on their cloud storage? Can you bypass that and store all footage on microSD cards instead on an endless loop - deleting old footage? Sorta like Yi camera setting on their app..

I don't think you can bypass the cloud storage not unless you turn off the alert notification. With the micro SD card, it will still record 24/7 or on motion even when alert notification is off. The wyze cam works the same as the Yi. Alert notification and short footage (6 seconds with Yi and 12 seconds on the Wyze cam) are uploaded to the cloud and the whole footage on the micro SD card can be viewed in the timeline "view playback" with the wyze cam.

Yes, it will only work with a 2.4 GHz WiFi.

Sorry if this has been asked. Does this automatically record on the SD card if you just click live view like the ring app kind of does? I have an altec Lansing camera that you have to open the app. Click live view and then click record if I want to it record what I'm currently watching. It will record motion on it's own but it won't record if I go into to app on my own and live view. I want one that will record when I live view automatically preferably to SD card. But yeah does it do that?

At this time, the only way to view the recorded footage is through the app. The motion alert footage is stored in the cloud. If you installed a micro SD card, additional footage is also stored there.

It will depend on the WiFi strength on where you are going to install it. I cannot really say because it depends on how many wall does the signal has to go through from your router to the camera. You can always install a WiFi extender if you have a weak signal.

Now, I'm not sure yet but I think the notification alert footage are stored in the cloud which you can find in the "notification" tab on the bottom of the main screen. As to the recording on the micro SD card, just click playback and what you see in the timeline is the footage from the micro SD card. Now, I'm not really sure if this is the case though and might need to test it because it can be setup that if recording to the micro SD card is "on" then, it doesn't record to the cloud at all...

I received mine over a month ago and I have it installed inside my garage.My alert doesn't take 15 seconds it takes anywhere from 2 to 5 seconds. You cannot beat it for the price, and I love everything about the camera, but my only complaint is that it only records 12 second clips. 😥

Depending on how you set it up. If it is 24/7 then around 2 days ..I set up mine to record during motion only. It also loops record which deleted old footage to record new ones.

Making it battery powered will need a different camera and battery powered cameras have their negatives as well and you will lose some of the features that the Wyze cam currently have right now like the activity zones.

da Mana wireless cameras are very expensive. I looked at several of them at Microcenter before choosing this little gem. The pan cam is a little more obscure and I think hides well. I put it on my mantle and it kind of just blends in and thankfully I have an outlet right next to the mantle. I also bought one of the version 2 square cameras and I love it love it love it love it!

It seems that this $20 plus the $20 sensor would be more reliable than any wifi camera and their hundreds false triggers notifications, no? What are your thoughts? Ring Wired cameras have pretty reliable motion detection but you will need a subscription if you want to view recorded footage in the cloud. Wyze with the PIR motion sensor is pretty reliable without any subscription fees.

@@gaja37 I have a standard wall electrical outlet on the ceiling of my front porch. (I had it installed to plug in Christmas lights and I can turn it off/on from a wall switch in my foyer.) I have my Wyze Cam mounted in the top corner of the front porch so I can view my entire porch area (front doors/windows). It's plugged in using just the standard plug that came with the camera into the ceiling electrical socket.

WiFi cameras always have latency..which has a delay 2-3 seconds.

But if I change it to a lower resolution 360p there's zero delay if I go up to HD there's between a 10 to a 15-second delay sometimes I have an internet speed of 60 download and between 5 to 6 upload. I even bought the Google Wi-Fi mesh so I can get better wifi and it did decrease the delay to about 6 seconds but there still a delay while viewing in HD

I bought 6 cameras but only 3 that works. Customer support is none existence. Troubleshooting on the website is not helpful either. I guess you pay for what you get. It took days before they return your email. They refer you back to their website. Not happy and very frustrated.

It does need the internet so as to get motion/sound notifications and when you want to access live view and watch recorded footage in the SD card. It can record without WiFi but its function will be way limited. I suggest NVR/DVR security camera systems if you don't have WiFi.

I have read that also - that it is sending info to European countries. This is the response to that issue from Wyze - copied from reddit.com in a discussion relative to this issue - "We managed to limit v2 camera traffic within US with our latest firmware [ed. v4.9.1.60 as of May 8, 2018]. We are asking help from some Reddit forum helpers to help check. So far the check is good except a suggestion to update one NTP server."
