Gene Simmons from Kiss said that if they were American they would have been the greatest band in the world. Because they started in the 80's their influences were metal from the 70's mainly Kiss. They inspired a lot of bands around the world. Theres a Guns n Roses ballad inspired by X-Japans song Endless Rain. They are the only band to sell out the Tokyo Dome 19 times. This last live concert was the last time the band you see here played together. 'hide" (heeday) the pink haired guitarist died (possible suicide)a year after this concert. 65,000 people attended his funeral. In 2018 at his 20 year memorial 35,000 people attended. The band was supposed to finish after this concert. The lead singer had been introduced to a religious cult by his wife that was threatening his life if he continued singing so they disbanded. They have since reunited and play every now and then. React to Endless Rain from this concert (last live) with the understanding that the fans thought it was the last song of the night and the last time they would ever see their idols on stage. Very emotional. Even more when you know later what happens to "hide". Theres a new Japanese all girl metal band called NEM-O-PHIL-A that do a cover of Kurenai thats pretty good. I think you would like them too. Try RATEI or DISSENSION. These girls started in 2019 late and are going places in a hurry.

Yes, it's from Tokyo Dome 1997. 55,000 people there. X Japan formed in 1982, it's very old band, who changes standart metal music. Next song by them - X (1993 live), it's a X Japan's anthem.

Glad you overcome that rock! X Japan fan for 20 years, people around me were listening to metal classics and I was the only X Japan fan.. And you need to book a flight to Japan to see them live. They had ended the band in the end of the 90's but came back at the end of 2000's.

Thanks for this reaction , this was Tokyo Dome it holds 55,000 and they sold it out over and over.... actually they have a song called X (my fave song) where the crowd jump, which in turn sets off earthquake alarms! Yoshiki drums / piano is Japans' answer to Prince..... genius

If I remember correctly, The Last Live was intended to be their last concert... The lead singer fell in love with a girl who was part of a cult and they convinced him that the music was bad or something... There may have also been other issues at play too... Not very long after, sadly the lead guitarist died (he seems to have accidentally hung himself while drunkenly trying to do a technique he did to ease the strain on his shoulders... No one is entirely sure)... So, in a way, this was their last performance... That said, eventually the lead singer got back in contact and they reformed, at first with a few different guest lead guitarists and then the lead guitarist from another band of their era (Luna Sea, unless I'm getting mixed up...another band worth checking out) joined as their new permanent lead guitarist (although I think he's still performing with Luna Sea). They were touring and recording a new album a few years ago, I think they played Coachella at some point... But then the Drummer's neck (and probably other parts too, given that he has probably every repetitive strain injury) got really bad and he had some surgeries... I think he's recovered a bit now, but they've more or less been on hiatus for a few years. And yeah, the drummer is crazy... I believe he partly got into drumming to cope with his father's suicide, which happened when he was maybe about 10 years old... He wrecked his neck headbanging and drumming like a crazy person... Doctors told him to stop drumming, but he compromised with the neck brace lol. I believe he's asthmatic too and sometimes he passes out, for which they keep oxygen tanks by the stage... He's also the leader and main composer/songwriter for the band... I believe he has notated every song of theirs as sheet music, including the drum parts... On top of that, he has composed music for the Emperor of Japan and The Golden Globes, if I remember correctly... And that's not even everything >_

I know this is a bit late but there's been an update in the band line up recently. Certainly are dogged by tragedy. The story goes that Yoshiki got into drums when his father committed suicide when he was only 10. Couldn't work out his grief on the piano he was already superb at so his mother bought him a drum kit. Since then we've lost the original base player, one guitarist and the replacement base player just passed away from cancer in October '23. :(

I am fortunate enough to have discovered X Japan in 1990 while in Japan in the Marine Corps. So I’ve been a fan for a very long time and tell people about them every chance I get when talking music. It’s an absolute crime they didn’t make it here in the US and blow up bigger than they were. So many great songs. Check out Art of Life. An epic song. Little long winded in the middle with the piano solo but a monster song. Do a deep dive on them. You want to know how much they mean to Japan check out the videos of when Hide died. They are THE band from Japan. They started it all. Think of any huge name you can think of. Metallica, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Journey and roll them all into one and you’ll scratch the surface. Watch The Last Live concert, from which this video is from, it’s one of the greatest live performances of all time.

Next song by them to react can only be one: "Art of life". Actually, it is much more than a song, it's a life changing experience. A 30 minute piece composed by Yoshiki (the drummer/pianist) during his recovery process from a mental collapse he had due to overwork, stress and pressure. All the steps of his rehabilitation are deeply entangled in the song, from calmness and routine to complete madness and disturbance. "Such a long song, including so many different music styles, that’s not commonplace. Then what? A symphony? A jazz piece? A classical composition? Most likely a mix of the three. Inspired by Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, Art of Life is a piece unique of its kind, a work I would like to call a symphonic poem with neo-romantic notes. Even though it’s a complex work, because of its length and particularities, Art of Life is definitely the song that made X Japan go down in history, and allowed Yoshiki to reach the kind of universality he thrived for."

PLEASE do more of X Japan reactions, some of the Live shows have tendency to get blocked which sucks.. It's called Last Live cause their vocalist Toshi got brainwashed by a cult and was forced to leave X Japan, this was their last time playing at the time, also their lead guitarist hide (the pink haired one) died few months later, he had one of the biggest funeral gathering post war time. X Japan changed the whole culture of Japans music and by them there are so many metal bands nowadays. The band has much tragedy in their past.. There is an excellent documentary called We Are X! which tells their story. PS. I have it on my google drive, so i could link it if you'd like.

Fun fact. One of the biggest reasons the band broke up was because the lead singer had joined a cult. He had since left the cult, but the band were on guard the entire shown incase he started to spout his cult bs. The drummer and lead guitarist in particular were waiting to tackle him at a moments notice lol

Nihon no Kyodai I find it curious that our views are so similar about each other's countrymens bands. Because we have been fortunate to be native to them it's due to that we are in awe over the other. Lastly, I've always felt Japan my heart and souls' home. Maybe I've had a past life as a Japanese. Anyway, I just wanted to say all that. My best to you and yours and I pray we will meet one day when I finally come home for the first time.

Coming here from your reaction to Glay - Temptation/yuuwakka and man I love it. I believe this band was responsible for Glay getting there start because Glay had a song called Rain and one of the members from X Japan heard it and got them started. For X Japan Yoshiki the drummer's dad died and he got the buisness for dry cleaning or something but he sold it to fund the band and they became BIG. One of the guitarists for X Japan died and past away, his name was Hide and when he past away the band Glay did a tribute in playing one of his songs "MISERY" which I hope/want you to react to
