Can I just say, hide (pronounced Heeday, pink hair guitarist) died a few months after this aged 33yrs. His funeral was the biggest in Japan since world war 2, over 50,000 people turned out. Yoshiki, the drummer is a classically trained pianist who is doing a lot in America at the moment and he started X Japan. In October this year the bassist Heath (55yrs) passed away shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. If you think Yoshiki looks young in this video look at him now aged 58yrs. He hasn't changed !!!

You just happened to bump into the most legendary Japanese rock/metal band. They're an 80s band, this concert you reacted to is from 1997, and it was the last one before the band dissolved. It was also their last show with Hide (pink hair guitarist) who unfortunately passed away short after that. In 2008 they reunited with a new guitarist and since then they released some new great stuff. The drummer is also pianist and main songwriter, and he's using a neck protector literally to prevent him from headbanging to hard cause it was about to cause him serious issues.

I'm late but since no one have mentioned so I gonna explain a little bit about the neck band. The drummer (Yoshiki) said in interviews that he had a habit of extreme headbanging while playing drums live (you can see in their early 90s performances) and as a result, he suffered some neck injuries after a couple of years. He had to wear that on stage to prevent him from constantly headbang. By the way, they have very great ballads like Endless Rain, Tears, Forever Love and energetic fast songs like Kurenai, X, Week End if you are free to check out

Yes X Japan was probably the biggest and most popular band in Japan (played and sold out(?) Tokyo Dome, where this video was filmed, a record 18 times I think) and the biggest influence on other Japanese bands ever since. Babymetal's producer was a big fan and there are many references, homages and tributes in Babymetal's performances and songs to them. To list a few - the neckbrace appears often in Babymetal concerts and videos (first in the 'Headbanger' video but they have also had concerts where everybody attending had to wear one - not least were the two nights at Tokyo Dome in 2016 where 55,000 people each night had neckbraces that all lit up at certain points in the concerts). Su sometimes bangs a gong at the end of a song or a concert - Yoshiki did this with X Japan At the end of concerts Su shouts "We are" for the response "BABYMETAL" ... X japan would shout "We are .... X" and there is also a documentary about them with that as the title. Babymetal's songs Akatsuki' and 'No Rain, No rainbow' are tributes to or heavily influenced by X japan's 'Kurenai' and 'Endless Rain' respectively. There are probably more things that have slipped my mind for the moment. Yoshiki, the drummer wearing the neckbrace, is also a classically trained pianist and the main lyricist/songwriter for X Japan. Hide (that is Hee-deh) the guitarist with pink hair died (committed suicide perhaps?) within a month or two of this 'Last Live' performance where the band was splitting up and there was pretty much national mourning for him in Japan. Since X Japan reunited I think his guitar is always on stage with them and they even had him appear as a hologram with them on stage.

"Dahlia" is my favorite song, but if you want to see Yoshiki's masterpiece with this band, you have to commit to the 30 minute "Art Of Life". WELL worth it. They only played it two or three times live, so search for this one: "X Japan - Art Of Life (Live) (1993.12.31 TOKYO DOME) (Full Concert)". It is the best. Don't be discouraged by the super long break and crazy piano solo in the middle - Yoshiki has to go from drums to piano and certainly takes his life pain out in that solo. And definitely, definitely watch the "We Are X" documentary. I've been in the music business since I was pretty young and I'd never heard of this band - that documentary opened my eyes.

They played it three times in it's entirety, once was unfilmed but there's bootleg audio of it out there as a test run for playing it both nights of the X Japan Returns shows. A fourth time was attempted in 2008, but Yoshiki passed out halfway through it, by his own admission "I hadn't slept in two days, I hadn't been practicing the song like I should have been, and the hide hologram started to give me a panic attack and it all just hit me at once".

Oh well... the white thing on Yoshiki´s neck is... a neck protector. Yoshiki got his vertebrae damaged after years of banging drums like crazy and a few years ago even go under surgery. Also have arm problems and have also asthma when he was young. Doctors says to her mother than "maybe can´t reach adult age" X-Japan is possible the biggest rock and metal band in Japan... just like this. They were huge, really huge. This concert was the last one before disband because the singer got himself into a sect. Years late they reunite again and replace the guitar Hide (the one with red jacket) who dies a new days after this concert with a big name in Japan´s music today: Sugizo who is also the guitar and one of the founders of a really big band: Luna Sea. In Japan´s speak about Yoshiki or X-Japan is like speaking about... well, the Beatles, no joke. Yoshiki is so popular in Japan who even compose an orchestral suite in honor for Japan´s emperor (the Japan´s government ask him to do it). Make no mistake, even he bangs the drums like a beast, he start to learn piano with only 3 years, can play a lot of instruments and have a very big foundation in classical music and composing. Remember to see in Babymetal sometimes a neck protector like this?... that´s because it´s a tribute to Yoshiki. He even have some piano from Yamaha made specially for him. Oh, and no. Yoshiki now is 54, make your math... he and the singer goes to kinder together. Just think about this as an example of X-Japan popularity... Yoshiki have their own Marvel Comic. One created by Stan Lee and Todd McFarlane (Blood Red Dragon) and their own "Hello Kitty" doll among some other things For a few thing more, just check the trailer of a documentary about X-Japan, an american one kzbin.info/www/bejne/j37aYoKYhtqbhM0 Well, also X-Japan are technically active today, but they do only a few things here and there. Yoshiki have strong pain on neck and arms just playing drums or piano and need shoots just to make a concert. But well... they aren´t young anymore. Btw, the stadium is the Tokyo Dome

X Japan was formed by the drummer/pianist (Yoshiki) and the lead vocalist (Toshi) back in the early 80s. They knew each other since they were really young children (5 years old if I remember correctly) and started playing music together in their early teens. Their original bassist (Taiji) was kicked out of the band in 1991 and replaced with the current bassist (Heath) due to some conflicts they have never divulged. Toshi, the lead singer, eventually got involved with the wrong woman who was part of a cult. She and the cult brainwashed him into quitting the band and so this video you're watching is from their last live concert they performed as a band. Hide - the guitarist with the pink hair - ended up accidentally committing suicide a few months after the break up of their band. They reformed the band in 2007 in honor of the 10 year anniversary of Hide's death with Sugizo (from the band Luna Sea) joining the band as a guitarist. Toshi divorced his ex-wife in 2010 after finding out she was having a long affair with the cult leader and he was finally free from all of the verbal and physical abuse he had to endure for the past decade though they had stolen all of his money in that time and all of the sales he had made from his solo music. Their former bassist Taiji also joined them on stage in 2010 for a couple of shows though he later committed suicide in 2011 after being held in a detention center after a physical altercation on a flight. So this band has had to endure a lot of ups and downs throughout their career. Obviously the deaths of Taiji and Hide were a big hit to the band as well as Toshi's exit in 1997. If you want a look into their story the movie "We Are X" is a must watch. It's really well done and was documented in 2014-2015.

Nice reaction dude! X Japan really is one of the biggest heavy metal bands of all time in Japan, they were huge in the early 90's. I think it's time to give the classic japanese rock bands the recognition that they deserve. Let me suggest you another band from the same era: SIAM SHADE. They weren't as big as X Japan or LUNA SEA, but they're very well respected and they were capable of always sold out arenas like Nippon Budokan. They played primarly hard rock but they approach to heavy metal, hardcore, punk, or soft rock with pop infusion (for me, it's like what BAND-MAID does nowadays). @@LEDsMoshPit Like Cobain, he despised the music industry and wanted to change it. It wasn't until bands like X Japan started the Visual Kei Movement (comparable to Glam Metal in the States) that youth began to shed the conservative, old ways of Japan. Even Hide by himself discovered bands that went on to become huge such as Glay, Luna Sea, Zeppet Store etc. New generation bands have been influenced by him. He was the only one who kept the pink hair and visual look when everyone else in the band dropped it. Hide represented youth who felt like outcasts and showed them that they mattered. His passing was truly the end of an era; it rocked Japan to its core to where downtown Tokyo had be shutdown because of the grief. This video will give you better insight kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYHSlHakpM2sq5I Since his death there has been a museum, yearly events(ran by his younger brother) and merch made in his honor.

LED's Mosh Pit Yep he is pretty much as famous in Japan for being a classically trained pianist, even writing and performing for the Emperor. To get an idea of how emotional a piano can sound you need to listen to one of their ballads like Tears or Endless Rain. Yoshiki’s father killed himself when Yoshiki was young and a lot of his lyrics are inspired by this loss. Also when he was young Yoshiki was not predicted to have a long life due to health issues mainly severe asthma. There are several clips where it ends with him crashing through his kit where he has over done it and people rushing oxygen to him. Which along with the neck brace I am pretty sure Babymetal reference in their shows writhing around on the floor after beating the hell out of a gong. Yoshiki’s body is almost completely shot from playing drums and needs pain killing injections in his arms before he can perform, but he says he knows no other way to play the drums except hitting them hard.
