My guess this is "Operation Zero Tolerance" and Bastion with others were behind the massacre. Bastion did not appear in the 90's X-Men animated series and although brutality shocking, what a brilliant way to introduce Bastion as the newest nemesis of the X-Men.

....After telling Gambit about the plan and admitting to having previous history with Magneto, Rogue declines Magneto's proposal during the inauguration gala. Cable arrives to warn the X-Men of an impending attack, but is sent back to the future. Amidst this, Madelyne realizes Cable is an adult Nathan. Suddenly, a rebuilt Wild Sentinel Master Mold appears and leads a group of Sentinels in attacking Genosha, *seemingly* killing Madelyne, Magneto, and dozens of other mutants. Gambit sacrifices himself to destroy Wild Sentinel Master Mold, leaving Rogue heartbroken. At the X-Mansion, the remaining X-Men watch the aftermath of the destruction on live news with utter shock.

I do not think Magneto was behind the massacre on Genosha. Remember the asteroid M arc when he wanted to protect mutants. I believe X let him run the X-Men because of when he created a nation for mutants and even strived to just wanting mutants to be left alone. I also believe that X came to terms of Magneto leading his own group of mutants and wanted Magneto to learn to be a ruler for a nation if he is that persistent because of their shared respect for each other. Magneto eventually came to learn to become more peaceful and is striving to combine his methods to those of X. Both X and Magneto have always wanted the other to come to their own side of the fence. X must've learned that a nation can be one step in peace for mutant kind and can force the U.N. into negotiations on mutant rights without war. After rewatching the 90's cartoon run it was mentioned during the asteroid M arc that even the X-Men themselves think they are doing more on fighting humans than working on establishing mutant rights and a change needs to happen.

Apocalypse is in charge, but Mr. Sinister works for him. Mr. Sinister has worked with Sentinels before in the comics. My guess is that Mystique, working for Sinister and Apocalypse, changed into one of the humans that is high up in the Sentinels program and sent the attack.

According to the Askani religion in the far future, Cable's destiny has always been to be the end of Apocalypse. He was destined to be brought in the future at the end times. Apocalypse and Cable are titled the Alpha and the Omega, the first mutant and the last. His life has always been terrible though.

What each universe has its own rules for time travel. like what if 616, 838 and the fox universe have different ways of going abt it. They all have TVAs but they all function a lil different. Bastion is your obvious big bad who has been effectively set up and foreshadowed. However I fully expect Magneto to be the season big bad due to this sending him over the edge back to hating humans. Remember it made me gape for the entire scene. Especially when Gambit was impaled and I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS HE WENT OMEGA EVEN THOUGH HE'S NOT OMEGA LEVEL IN THE COMICS and decimated that Wild Sentinel. He'll be back, anyone that died during the attack will be back its just a matter of how and who will remember and will the MCU time travel laws apply or will they continue the 90's series ideal?
