A basic deck of Bicycle brand cards costs less than $5 U.S and has 53 cards he can charge and launch. It's a very economical ammo to stock ad easy to carry multiple packs. Let's say Gambit picks two pockets in his coat, loads five packs of cards in each pocket, that gives him 530 cards he can charge up, throw, and detonate at will and it'll weigh less than one pound and cost him around $30 to $40 to stock up more.

The story is very disconnected from the xmen and has demonology terms instead of mutants in Orleans which is why he speaks French sometimes in his speech. So it could be an interesting path to bring in the xmen afterwards to attach voodoo and occult fans to come see marvel films.

1. Because it's an iconic image that evokes a lot of cultural and thematic concepts with a single picture. Very handy for a comic book. 2. He's French/Creole and a Gambler, so what better way to convey that, again with a single image, than with a deck of cards. Something most people immediately associate with scoundrels (because you bet your ass they were trying to get some Han Solo vibes off this guy), bad boys, etc. 3. A card themed character opens up all kinds of gambling/card based puns and one-liners. Very handy for a minimal writing medium like comic books. 4. They're pretty easy to draw, so since they are a regular part of his overall look, you don't stress out the artists with overly complicated designs on every other panel. 5. On a more practical, real world angle, playing cards can be flung pretty far with surprising accuracy, in the hands of a trained expert. And if you ignore physics (which come on, that's pretty much the entire foundation of comic books), you can ignore things like drag, wind resistance, etc, and just let them be a straight flying projectile. And if your power is "i can turn anything into an explosive with the power of quantum", then it's a pretty handy weapon to always have. It's not actually a "weapon", so it won't set off any metal detectors. It won't make any normal human raise an eyebrow at you as a threat, while simultaneously guaranteeing you to always be armed. Plus replacing it is pretty easy. You can find card decks for sale pretty much anywhere.

Gambit is a smooth talker and a charmer. If he wasn't already enamored by Rogue, he would charm the pants off of almost every woman, mutant and non-mutant, he meets. Playing cards are used by magicians because they are light weight and with enough practice, can be thrown like a baseball. One of Houdini's tricks involved five cards chosen by random people ending up on the points of a large metal star. If thrown by a regular person who has amazing skill, the cards will cut their target. Be it a banana or human flesh. The X-Men are fortunate to have Gambit on the team. He can read a room and see every exit. Training from his days in the Thieves Guild of New Orleans. Also, he's a heavy hitter that moves like a lighter class of fighter. He maybe deceitful, but only to his enemies.

Even before hearing the finer details of his powers, I always assumed it was due to a card being small and easy to carry. This means a lot of ammo. Plus, even before finding out about the thieves guild in the OG 97 series, I always took him for a sort of gambler or card shark, which also fits his 'theme' from a little kid's perspective. The fact the finer details synch with my limited knowledge of his powers is weirdly surprising.

I always thought he should use oranges instead. The peel of one could be peeled really quick if he used his kinetic shoot power on it. After that, he has like ten orange segments he can shoot off with. This way, he can always bring a sack of oranges with him on his quests and have tens of hundreds of little orange segments to use. Plus they can stun someone if the juice gets in their eyes.

iirc he explained in an old comic that it's partly just because it's "cool and memorable" so helps with his gimmick but then outside of that cards are also just a really economical and easy to supply ammo choice. You can buy them basically anywhere, they're light and compact, 52 to a pack, flat shape makes them easy to stack for extra space conservation etc. like if you think about it he could use coins for example sure but that many coins would also get quickly get heavy in comparison and comparatively need more pocket space due to shape etc...
