From my experience of learning German it can be quite intimidating speaking it to a native German because of accents and like Michael said, the fact there are a lot more words in the German vocabulary than in English. Speaking it on a very basic level is pretty easy but to actually speak it like a native is really hard.

That sounds familiar, its the same with me (the other way round) 😁 to hear a guy like him talk my tongue, makes him so much more real and normal (plain in a cute way) to me ! He is not able to use or even alienate his voice to act/manipulate the audience .

His German is impeccable. Test is always the ‘ch’ pronunciation. Perhaps a few small grammatical errors but for someone who left Germany when he was two yrs old, but great command of lingo

Though I came here in hopes of seeing Michael talk about Erik in Dark Phoenix, this was a nice personal interview. I’d much rather watch real conversations like this as opposed to when interviewers force the actors and filmmakers to play awkward games and watch random videos on the spot.

Absolut. Das typische Schulenglisch 🙈 Da wird in der Schule so etwas beigebracht, aber in solchen Interviews sieht man, wie schrecklich das Englisch ist, das man in der Schule lernt.

I think my German is on a similar level to his, I always make grammar mistakes. I have had Germans tell me the exact same thing the interviewer said to Fassbender, about people living in Germany for years who speak a lot worse than i do lol. XD it gives me some comfort at least.

I swear my level is identical to his, down to the clear nervousness being put on the spot (of course, I've never produced mine on camera). I even have that "ich muss es mehr uben" sentence saved in my brain to say up front in order to excuse my discomfort.

The German man whos interviewing him translated Ballpen to Michael Fassbender wrong.He said Pencil, but Pencil is Bleisstift.And Kugelschreiber is Ballpen.

Da biegen sich mir die (sehr-schön-geschnittenen-gekürzten-Zehennägel) wenn ich dieses TiiiEjtsch vom ,,Moderator" höre. Das erinnert mich an meine Schulzeit; als die Lehrerin sagte: ,,Wer Probleme beim Aussprechen des TH hat, derjenige/diejenige kann einfach ,,S" sagen! Nein!! Verdammt noch einmal! Eben nicht!! Man steckt die Zunge zwischen die Zähne und macht es richtig....ansonsten wird es gruselig.

I hate the way, how the interviewer corrects him, as Mike Fassbender said in German: "Es ist sehr exakt"(engl:It is very exactly),"How do you say it in German?" and the interviewer answered him:"Präzise"(precise), instead of saying no you did a good job, you translated it right. Even exactly in english means exakt in german, but precise means präzise. Maybe the interviewer is a nice person, but i don't like unnessecary correction of people, which have no sense,instead of pushing your ego.

Ugh sorry but... If you're gonna do an interview in English please work harder on your language skills... I appreciate Fassbender talking in German, but the overall feeling for this was just... cringe. Please try harder next time.

@@miischax The accent was jarring to listen to, and fun fact: Most Americans and British people I met, expect us to talk like that. They were/are always totally flustered when I start speaking without any of that cliché German accent, but proper and clear pronunciation, as should everyone who learned English in school, IF he/she had a good, thorough teacher. My English lessons were almost THIRTY years ago and I NEVER talked like that. My teacher would've killed me if I did. Sad to see how low the standards are today... The interview itself would've been better, if it WASN'T about the movie, since he didn't ask Fassbender even one single question about it. Next time focus on the target, not only on the fact that a famous actor gave you a bit of his time to talk about his current movie and you went to town on him about his personal life. Plus Michael looks awfully tired and exhausted although he's being really charming and polite.

There is no reason to get that tilted over language skills, mastering two languages and having a native accent in each is not easy. Good for you and your teacher than you have no such issue but us native English speakers give grace.
